The day after the day before...

Day one of our latest MOUNTAIN SKILLS 1 course this weekend started in bright cold sunshine ☀️ but soon clouded over.
Temperatures hovered around freezing with icy patches on puddles and turf alike.. 🥶
This kept us moving along in an effort to stay warm, but it stayed dry for the majority of the day ..😊

Tomorrow is another matter, with storm Herminia on the horizon, we may have a major change of plan.

A great day in the hills, making the most of the conditions, with the guys learning many new navigation skills along the way.
Nice one.. 😃

The calm before the storm.. 🌀
Took advantage of the quiet weather to head up Djouce with Tom and Barney before the arrival of less amenable weather tomorrow.. 😱

Chilly and misty up top but a fine a pleasant day overall.
Good to be out on the 🇮🇪 hills with friends.

My second MOUNTAIN SKILLS 2 course within a week in Wicklow.

Cloudy and chilly in a stiff breeze, but this didn't dim the enthusiasm and energy of the team.
Some great navigation skills learned and put into practice by the group today.. 👏 👏

Will the snow come back?
Well, I for one certainly hope so.
If it does, and if it hangs around a while, then we will need some good winter skills under our belt to travel safely and efficiently through the snowy mountains..❄️❄️

It turned out to be a beautiful day for our midweek MOUNTAIN SKILLS 2 course today...😎

Though not ideal for poor visibility navigation training, it was very welcome, and the warm, sunny weather was just what the doctor ordered after the cold 🥶 of recent days.

The night navigation was enhanced by views of Mars, Saturn and Venus, and a red rising Moon.
Perfect..😊

Out in the Wicklow Mountains today to run our latest MOUNTAIN SKILLS 1 course.
It was important to give due consideration to the weather/snow conditions, and the general thaw that had set in from Friday afternoon.

There are still a couple of centimeters of slushy snow lower down (up to 400m), but it is melting fast.
The higher mountains may still hold substantial quantities of snow, and as this melts the risk of slips and slides increases.

In the end, the guys enjoyed some great views across the mountains and got in some very valuable navigation experience in snow conditions.

Out in Wicklow with Tom and Barney today checking on the snow conditions.
The wind had gone, but so had the sun, revealing a monochrome, surreal landscape.
Ominous black clouds on the horizon were dumping snow somewhere. ❄️ ❄️

The was up to knee deep in places and beginning to get a crust, but not firm enough to support our weight.
Postholing is one of my least favourite activities, but necessary if we were to make progress.

A good workout for the legs and great to get out in the hills.
