St Muireadach's High Cross at Monasterboice. You can colour this picture and be in with a chance to win a prize

Ireland’s high crosses are some of the most stunning expressions of early Christian art found anywhere in Europe. As it’s Good Friday, we thought we’d introduce one of our favourites, and we have a free colouring page for you to download and print.

Writings: I wrote this poem a few years ago when I was inspired by a placename that I was researching.
The placename was 'Bracken Road' and it reminded me of the Bruckey field full of ferns and mossy stones that we used play in as children in the 1960's.
The poem describes the activities that we used get up to and they are still very vivid in my mind.
Have a read and enjoy🌿☘️🌾🎋🦔🦡🐝🦋🐞🐜🐌🐛🦗🌞

21 Dec 2020: Winter Solstice this morning from Newgrange was very different to yesterday. Instead of witnessing the sun rise over the horizon and beam it's light down through the passage of this ancient burial tomb, we had a misty, overcast morning with no sun light. Nevertheless on this occasion the discussion revolved around the architecture, history, science and social aspects of Newgrange. Today, Clare Tuffy, Manager of Newgrange and Dr Frank Prendergast, Ireland's leading Archeoastronomer present us with 17 minutes of fascinating facts interspersed with some video footage from the spectacular 2018 Winter Solstice as it was captured from inside of the tomb passage.

From December 2020 and throughout the year of 2021, there will take place many events and commemorations to mark 1500 of the Celtic saint, St Colm Cille. Known otherwise by his Roman name, Columba, this Irish man founded his monastery on the Scottish island of Iona. Colm Cille is the 3rd saint of Ireland after Patrick and Brigid 😇🙏 🇮🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

St Colm Cille, otherwise known as St. Columba, was born at Gartan, Co. Donegal on 7th December 521AD. For the coming year there will be events and commemorations to celebrate his life and times.

Columcille 1500
The 7th of December 2020 marks the beginning of a years celebration and commemoration of Saint Colmcille also known as Columba who was born in Gartan, Donegal in the year 520-521.
Colmcille is one of Ireland's three Patron Saints along with Patrick and Bridget. Drumhome Heritage Society will commemorate and celebrate the 1500th anniversary of our venerated Saint Colmcille with a specially designed collage/poster depicting many noteable sites and places connected with the saint and his life.

We will share interesting posts on Colmcille’s life, Monastic sites, writings and myths connected with the saint. A series of events will be held over the celebration year 7th Dec 2020 to 7th Dec 2021 and updates of these events will be shared in due course.

Drumhome - Drum Thuma in Gaelic, means hillside burial ground. Drumhome Monastery (near Ballintra & Laghey in County Donegal) is said to have been founded by St. Colmcille approximately in 560AD at the request of Ainmire, King of Cineal Chonaill and High King of Ireland.
Ainmire was the first cousin of Colmcille. The monastery was later dedicated to Ernan Mac Eòghain, who had been a monk under Colmcille’s authority and was also his nephew. St. Ernan in time would be appointed Abbot of Drumhome Monastery.

This is a great initiative by Mr Vincent Butler. For every €20 raised for the homeless charity Simon Community, a book of his photographs will be donated to a school. Now that is a case of 'two for the price of one' 😁

Our Celtic Landscape Story

Hailing from the beautiful County Donegal in the North West of Ireland, I am blessed to have lived for many years close to both the Countryside and the Coastline, just south of Dublin City. I have always been passionate about all aspects of Ireland… its Landscape and Seascape… its Archaeology and Architecture… the Traditions and Culture of the Irish People… the development of Christianity in Ireland and its turbulent Political History. As your Tourist Guide I will endeavour to Show and Describe to you the many Features and Aspects of Ireland that help you Discover what makes this Emerald Isle such an intriguing place. I will be Delighted to ‘bring you by the hand’ from corner to corner of this Magical Country. You will get first-hand Experience of its Bustling Cities, its Lazy Countryside, its Haunting Castle Ruins and its Spiritual Monastic Settlements. People thank me for my Kindness and Patience with them… my Clarity when I tell Stories… my Passion and Enthusiasm for the work that I do. Let’s Enjoy this Adventure together.
