Welcome to 2022, and from Dublin Heritage Tours we wish each and every one a prosperous, peaceful and most of all PROGRESSIVE New Year!

By 'progressive' we do not mean the new modern connotation of embracing new political or social ideals. By progressive we mean the forwarding and disseminating- the progressing- of those many facets and episodes of Dublin and Irish history that have either been lost, hidden or even deliberately expunged.

Snippets of Dublin Heritage

Sir Author Wesley (Iron Duke) named "Testimonial" because it was built when he was still alive. He was born on Merrion Square in the house which was used as land commission offices directly facing Irish Government buildings. The Duke of Wellington was educated at Wynne's High school Grafton St which is now the location of Bewley's cafe he married Lord Longfords daughter in St George's Church Temple St. He brought seventy years of peace to Europe through the Treaty of Vienna. When he was PM he challenged King George III and it was his government that legislated for Roman Catholic emancipation in 1829 he also supported the establishment of Maynooth college.

It was Daniel O'Connell who quoted "if he was born in a stable would that make him a horse?" because it was said as an insult on the Duke of Wellington's Irish heritage, but the quote stuck on Wellington as his insult on Ireland. Funny that Daniel O'Connell and Wellington were both in the Dublin Militia in 1780's and were also Free Masons and their masonic history can be viewed in the museum located at Freemason Hall Molesworth St Dublin 2.

Thankfully the Wellington Monument as it is commonly known to Dubliners still stands today in honour of a great Anglo Irish man built at a time before Gaelic revival of the 1890s which redefined Irish identity as Roman Catholic and Nationalist; however, in Wellington's time it was about the rights of the Kingdom of Ireland.

Friday Snippets on Dublin Orange Heritage. 1701 statue of King William III College Green, the medal was produced in large quantities and manufactured in pewter. Sold cheaply to raise funds for the maintenance of the statue.

Ironically the medal has retained its ribbon after 150 Years. This particular medal was found in a charity shop in Fairview and sold for €10 one can hazard a guess that it was part of a house clearing. Worth bearing in mind that the last Ladies Orange Lodge in Dublin closed in 1976 and the members all lived in East Wall and Fairview area of Dublin with the majority of Orange Sisters working in B & I ferries.

The statue was blown up in an act of cultural terrorism in 1929. The College Green statue represented the only work of Anglo-Dutch sculptor and woodcarver Grinling Gibbons in Ireland.

Private cross border PUL tour group today no photos for security reasons. We had access to Bank of Ireland College Green, House of Lords. Focus of today's tour; French Huguenot heritage of Dublin. The two tapestries depicting Siege of Londonderry and the battle of the Boyne 1690. Both were manufactured in the "Tenters" area of the City. We completed the day with a few jars in ironic Dublin pub. It is said there is money in dirt. The grave monument dedicated to a Dublin rag and bone man, upon his death he left a small fortune behind him.

Dublin Heritage Tours work in cross border cultural engagement from March to September only.

Gold Spanish and Williamite coins made up part of the grapevine; symbolising the good economic fruit emanating from the 1688 Bill of Rights and the Protestant settlement and ascendency for the Kingdom of Ireland.
