A very special place for a hiking trip while staying at in 2024

Lough Tay, Co Wicklow

Lough Tay, Co Wicklow, from Luggala.

From the Kissing Gate Entrance, hiking down into the valley and up to this view is about 4km one-way, and a fairly strenuous ascent up Luggala. There was windy Wicklow weather but not too boggy today underfoot… the lake is sometime known as the Guinness Lake due to the brackish water and pale sandy beach; also the fact that Gareth de Brún, a descendent of Arthur Guinness, lived here. Loved seeing the replanting going on, and the ‘leave no trace’ ethos. We were met at the gate by staff who reminded us to stick to trails and take all rubbish away. Beautiful part of the Planet x

John Millington Synge's grandparents lived here in Wicklow and, from an early age, he developed a great love for the place. Even as a child he would set off to explore its mountains and moorlands. Later he would strike up conversations with locals or travelling vagrants, and note down every unusual expression or turn of phrase. Many of these phrases, along with the tales he collected and characters he encountered, would be written into his work. Synge died aged just 38 from Hodgkins disease, but he left behind a valuable collection of plays, essays and poems, like this lovely ode to his beloved Wicklow. 🥰
