𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻’𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 🏌️‍♂️🏌️‍♀️

This Saturday 9th March our Captains John Bonner and Mary Doherty and our new President Joseph Gillespie will officially launch our golfing season with the 2024 𝓓𝓻𝓲𝓿𝓮 𝓘𝓷. It promises to be unmissable entertainment with Mary’s experience from last year giving her the edge over John and Joseph when it comes to pre shot nerves. Draw for partners takes place at 𝟵.𝟯𝟬 𝗮𝗺 with the ceremonial 𝓓𝓻𝓲𝓿𝓮 𝓘𝓷 set for 10 am, followed immediately by a shotgun start in a 3 or 4 team scramble.

Soup & sandwiches and presentation of prizes afterwards in the clubhouse so a fantastic morning and afternoon to look forward to as our 2024 season really takes off just ahead of St Patrick’s Day and there will be 3 people (perhaps nervously) hoping it takes off with success, straightness and distance, far out into the Wild Atlantic 🌊🏌️‍♂️🏌️‍♀️🏌️‍♂️⛳️

So, along with our ‘Race to Owey’ Finale we had our usual weekend competition running side by side and Joseph Doherty’s 40 points would give him a second victory over the weekend to complete a nice double. Michael Duddy was second with 39 points and Michael Boyle third with 38 points on a break of tie from John Hyland who added a fourth in the Club Competition to his second place in the Race to Owey Finale. Well done to all our prize winners over the weekend. In our 50/50 competition Gary Boyle leads the way after 4 weeks of play but there is a chasing pack so plenty to play for over the next two weekends and we will know the winner on St Patrick’s Day ☘️ 🏌️‍♂️⛳️

A sixth name on the winner’s board in the latest edition of the ‘Race to Owey’ and that name is Joseph Doherty. Joseph had a super winning score of 40 points, he turned at the clubhouse only 2 over and that had given him 23 points and when he added a birdie on the 10th he was looking really good. A sticky patch followed over the next few holes but pars on the 13th, 15th and 17th kept his card on track and when he signed his card it was indeed a winning one.

Congratulations to Joseph and to all the prize winners & to everyone who qualified for the Finale. Another hugely successful year, and a great finale event was enjoyed by all in superb conditions.

Thanks to our competition secretary Eugene on running what has become a huge event in our calendar and on an excellent prize table on the day 🏆⛳️

We have 8 still standing as we head into 𝓦𝓮𝓮𝓴 6 of our Last Man with 4 fallers last weekend on Man Utd (3) and Brighton (1). An unusually busy Saturday at the traditional 3 o’clock kick off time this weekend with 6 games, 1 Saturday evening match, 2 on Sunday including the Manchester derby and a Monday night game to wrap things up with Sheffield Utd hosting an in form Arsenal team that just can’t stop scoring, and have become the first team in the Premier League to score 2 goals in 7 consecutive halves. Spring was definitely in the air over the weekend and finally we had a Saturday and Sunday with close to matching conditions. The man making the most of the lovely weekend was Brendan O’Donnell who shot a superb 43 points for victory. Brendan turned at the clubhouse with 20 points and found another gear on the back 9 to record 23 points on the way home to post his winning score that included back to back birdies at the 15th and 16th. Seamus Mc Donagh was second with an impressive 41 points and the only other player to hit the 40 mark was Tom Marry who took third place. Fourth went to Niall Doherty on a break of tie with 38 points. Congratulations to Brendan and to all our prize winners over the weekend 🏌️‍♂️⛳️

𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 ⚽️⚽️⚽️

We are down to just 12 still standing after the weekend’s action with 15 fallers on Spurs (6), Newcastle (5) and Everton (4). For 𝓦𝓮𝓮𝓴 5 we have 9 games to choose from starting with Liverpool v Luton on Wednesday night, brought forward because Liverpool play in the Carabao Cup Final on Sunday. The other fixture from the weekend (effected by the Cup Final), Chelsea v Spurs does not have a date fixed so we go ahead with a 9 game fixture list. On Saturday we have 6 of the games including an 8pm kick off where Arsenal might have the chance to go top if Liverpool don’t secure all 3 points against Luton, Arsenal host Newcastle. Because of the Cup Final there is only 1 game on Sunday and that sees Wolves host bottom club Sheffield Utd and once again we have a Monday night game with an under pressure David Moyes hoping his West Ham get back on track when they host Brentford.

Our final 12 are:
Declan Gillespie,
Brian Gillespie,
John Gillespie,
Pat Devenney,
Tom Mc Ginty,
Johnny Mc Loone,
Owen Ward,
Eoghan Sharkey,
Pat Cunningham,
Phil Ward,
Geraldine Gillespie,
John Bonner.

Any Liverpool selections obviously in by Wednesday evening, other picks for the weekend by Friday night please.

Good luck everyone 👍

A super round of golf from Robert Wehrley to take victory over the weekend with a round of only 1 over for 41 points. 2 birdies and 2 bogeys had Robert turning at the clubhouse level par and on the back 9 there were 8 pars and only 1 bogey to complete a fantastic round. Robbie O’Donnell was second with 40 points, Alan Cowley third with 39 points and Gerard Mc Elwee fourth with 38 points. Well done to Robert and to all our prize winners over the weekend.

A record breaking weekend in the Premier League and a big fall in 𝓦𝓮𝓮𝓴 2 of our Last Man Standing with 52 fallers. 35 of those were on Newcastle who played out a fantastic 4-4 draw with Luton, while we also had fallers on Spurs, Burnley, Fulham, Bournemouth and Chelsea.

We have 31 still standing as we head into 𝓦𝓮𝓮𝓴 3 of our Last Man next weekend, with Man City, who just provided the last 8 from our 31 in the Monday night football, getting things underway as they host Everton in the early kick off on Saturday and there will once again be a Monday night game to round the weekend off as Crystal Palace host Chelsea with both managers under pressure to secure a win.

Good luck to those 𝓼𝓽𝓲𝓵𝓵 𝓼𝓽𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓲𝓷𝓰 after an exhilarating weekend of action ⚽️👍

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚

After a mini Winter break we are back with a brand new Last Man Standing this week with a full programme of midweek fixtures in the Premier League. There are 5 games on Tuesday, beginning with Nottingham Forest hosting Arsenal in a 7.30pm kick off so please get all picks in before then. A further 3 fixtures on Wednesday night including Liverpool v Chelsea in what is probably the game of the week but one that might not get much traction in our Last Man and then on Thursday night we have 2 games with the action wrapping up with a Wolves team who are in good form hosting Man Utd.

As usual please send your picks to Donal Boyle, Gerard Dickey, Brendan Ward or Declan Gillespie and your €10 entry can be given to any of the above or dropped in at the clubhouse. It’s been a while since there was a full Premier League fixture list so it’s great excitement to have it back and it’s going to be followed up with a full programme at the weekend as well. New entrants are welcome and all that is left to be said is pick wisely and good luck ⚽️👍

From his years spent on the links in Narin/Portnoo to his time in Cruit Island Fred had so many friends, and all of those friends will have many stories about Fred.

A great character, a talented golfer who was super competitive and what an organiser he was when we think of the Classics he ran down through the years.

Everyone at Cruit Island offer our deepest condolences and prayers to all of Fred’s family and friends, his daughters Marie, Paula and Marcella, his son John, sons-in law Owen, Martin and Dessie, daughter-in-law Donna and all his grandchildren.

A super round of golf from Chris Mc Gonagle playing of scratch took victory in the Caisleáin Óir Hotel sponsored competition this weekend. Chris takes the second spot on the boat for 2024, joining last week’s winner Brian Mc Monagle, if you haven’t done so yet, make sure to get your entry in for what is now a hugely popular event in our golfing calendar.

Thanks to James, Michelle and all the team at Caisleáin Óir Hotel for their loyal and generous sponsorship of our club ⛳️
