Listowel's John Joe Halpin shared first prize
in Fly-Tying competition.
I discovered this fascinating fact when I recently called into Halpin's Fishing & Shooting Store to enquire about a fishing permit for a guest. The proprietor Jim Halpin (a distant relative) told me an interesting story about a fly which his father John Joe entered into a fly-tying competition more than fifty years ago.
His fly, now named "The Hapin Fly" shared first place not just for the way it was tied, but also for it's merit as a killing pattern. Notably it was a successful lure for salmon but was also great for trout. John Joe was recognised in his day as a true craftsman.
Today Jim carries on his family tradition stocking both modern and traditional patterns and he very kindly allowed me to photograph an original "Halpin Fly." (shown below).
I have ordered some to be made up and will be delighted to present one to my next angling guests. Halpins provide permits along with helpful tips and advice on local fishing and can be found at 24 Church Street, Listowel. Do drop by the next time you find yourself in Listowel.
