Meath County Council and Discover Boyne Valley are very proud to partner with Rás Tailteann Cycle Race and Ger Campbell, Race Director to host the event in 2024. The final stage of Rás Tailteann will take place in Meath at Bective. 🚴‍♂️

Here in Meath, we have historical links to Rás Tailteann over its 7 decades and have provided 5 of its overall winners.
The original organisers, members of the National Cycling Association associated the cycle race with the Tailteann Games. The Tailteann Games were Ireland’s Olympic Games which were known to have been held between the 6th and 9th centuries AD outside Navan in Teltown. We live on that tradition, having won the Tailteann Cup! 🎉

On the north side of Inbher Colpa, near Baltray in Co. Louth, you will find two imposing standing stones that have watched over the river for 5,000 years. The view alone is worth the short trip from Drogheda.

In 1999 it was observed by three local men that the larger of the stones aligns with Rockabill (two small islands off the coast of Skerries, Co. Dublin) and the rising sun on Winter Solstice. It was later observed that the hill of Four Knocks passage tomb may be seen on the horizon, if one looks at a gap created between the two Baltray stones.

📅Save the date! Slane Castle hosts Boyne Valley Viking Experience on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May 2024

The Vikings are invading Slane Castle this May in a festival of ferocious fighting and family fun harking back to the 8th and 9th century when the invaders were very real indeed. The theme is “Síol na Dragún” or “Descendants of the Dragon”, one of the many names used to describe these fierce Norse invaders. The third Boyne Valley Viking Experience will be the largest historical re-enactment festival in Ireland this year with Viking warriors battling for supremacy in front of the Castle. It’s a fabulous family day out with flashing swords, demonstrations, a tented Viking village, and a fleet of replica longships from the Viking TV series compete with sailors.

30/03/2024

Today all that remains of St. Mary's Abbey is the 40m high east wall of the tower known as the Yellow Steeple. The abbey had many incarnations over the centuries but the ruins today are from the abbey built in 1368 and operated by the Augustinian order.

St. Patrick founded Ireland's first great church at Trim. The church was destroyed at least twice by attacking forces and it has long been believed that St. Mary's Abbey was founded on the site of the church ruins. The abbey itself was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell. It is believed that the Yellow Steeple was actually used as a garrison against Cromwell's troops until the tower was destroyed.
