SAVE THE DATE! SKERRIES MIDSUMMER FESTIVAL IS BACK!
Four days of funfair, food and good old-fashioned family frolics beside the best beach in the world (in our book!)
Bouncing back with a welcome pep in its step this year is Skerries Midsummer Festival, easing us towards the longest day of the year from a slightly earlier weekend this time around, on the June bank holiday of May 31 to June 3, with oodles of family fun.
And it all starts with a bang on Friday with a firework display kicking off proceedings as the tented festival village on the green by the South Strand behind the sailing club gets into gear with food vendors, funfair, bouncy castles, outdoor movies, live music and bar for the grown-ups.
A nice touch this year is that there is no cover charge for the music, just make whatever donation you can, if you like, to the very good cause of Skerries Youth Support Services, who will be on site throughout the weekend. Every cent goes towards free professional counselling for young people aged 12 to 24 (ph 089 616 7222 www.syss.ie).
Saturday is shaping up nicely already too, as the festival village continues while thereβs the much-loved sandcastle competition nearby. The RNLI plans to open their doors for tours of the lifeboat station, all going well, and the festival will be inviting Skerries Sports Club, of both the surf and the turf varities, to come down to the South Strand near the low-tide time of 1pm to display their skills, or to let those interested have a go.
With the movies, music, food and bar continuing into the evening, Saturday night is Mama Mia Night. Come down in your best Abba finery to watch the film and then dance to the festivalβs live Abba music tribute.
Sunday offers the chance to have a second go at the sandcastle competition (Skerries News will be taking photos and handing out certificates of participation to keep on both days), while the bouncy castles and slides, funfair rides and vendors continue throughout the day, followed by more live music and outdoor movies into the evening.
Monday is the last chance to enjoy the funfair, food and music as the festival winds to a close.
Organizers hope to add more events and attractions as we get closer to the bank holiday weekend. Some events are weather dependent or subject to change right up to the last minute β itβs a movable feast!
