A Sunday in June, too hot and humid to really achieve much but picture perfect.

The sun is still shining, Ireland who are we?

As I rose early this morning I reflected on the month of May and all that she had brought forth.

Warm sunny days with the winds at our back and the promise of longer evenings ahead.

99's, football kits, daily applications of sunscreen, Zirtek taking the place of Calpol and extra after after dinner plays.

Grasses looking greener than I can remember and the Hawthorn trees standing tall like giant puffs of cotton candy saluting us as we go about our daily treks. Cow parsley spilling over onto the road, an explosion of growth and colour, new life and nesting.
It was like world woke up and we were there to greet it!

For me a particular high point is and continues to be the return of the swallows after their long flight and year long absence.

The holy grail of the GAA is back in swing.
Mammy's, Daddy's (and anyone else than can be roped in) roaring on their support from the side lines much to the delight of young faces tanned and freckled from the sun.

The stresses of life didn't disappear but the sharper edges were taken off.

May, you have been good to us.
June, you have big shows to fill.

Spring has sprung, the skies are blue and lambing season is knocking on our door.

Farming can difficult and sometimes it can feel a bit desolate and isolating in the winter months when the animals need more from you than at any other time in the farming year.

The ground is cold and the grass has little growth, the hay bales that we make in the summer months are put out to feed the animals along with supplementary grains.

Feeding can be a chore but on days like today it's a joy to be out on the land and serves as a reminder of how lucky we are to have this farming life.

The cycle of life continues as we count down to lambing 2023 which we anticipate will start around March 10th and no doubt be in full swing for St. Patrick's Day!

The expectant ewes have been separated out and we have begun feeding extra buckets of ration those expecting twins or triplets.
The same will commence next week for those with single pregnancies.

The weather has been kind and we have been able to keep the flock outside for longer than is the norm. Soon they will move indoor to sheds and the long days and nights of lambing begins.
The most wonderful time of the year awaits and we look forward to new life on the farm. ❤️

Frosty mornings, blue skies and crisp air, always country living .

We're slowly waking up from our winter slumber, enjoying the calm before the lambing storm that awaits.
The scanning has been completed and numbers are in but more about the later.
It's eight weeks and counting until the delivery ward opens and the pens fill up bringing new life to the farm. As the old song goes ....it's the most wonderful time of the year!

Were also tending to the business of the Mews, fresh coats of paint and newly painted doors are in progress, the window and couch cleaning is booked.

New towels and bed linens are ordered, along with some new pieces for the shelves.
I'm on the lookout for something for the walls..... I'm always on the look out for ornaments and pictures as neither are easily come by but patience and all that!

In the meantime enjoy all of the freshness and newness that January brings.

Happy New Year from all at Butterhill Mews, out with the old and in with the new!

There's very few of us (especially those with young children) that come out of the Christmas period feeling rested, so take it easy on the New Years Resolutions, the changes will come when your ready for them.

2023 Calendars Open for Booking.

In the midst of our winter slumber and in what seems like the blink of an eye, we have now opened calendars for our 2023 season.
Our season will run from April 1 through to September 30th.

It feels almost surreal to be entering our 3rd year as Airbnb hosts both opening our home and farm to visitors from far and wide.

A lot has changed in the past 3 years and we have all likely experienced far too much yet at the same time life continues in its familiar ebb and flow, I suppose what's most notable for us is the fact that we no longer have any babies in our house as our smallest man is now 5.

So the months continue to turn and here at ButterhillMews we move towards our lambing season with lots of expectant mothers grazing the land.
We look forward to welcoming in Spring time, it's longer days, fresh growth and with it many new guests,

See you soon!

Evening chats with these beauties, Bob and Otis.
Father and Son, aged 7 and 17 both fresh as daisies.
The gentlest of souls, rescued on Halloween 2019 from the Cork Donkey Sanctuary.
We consider ourselves the lucky ones ❤️🥕🥕.
A bit of convincing needed but definitely room for a couple more!

There was a gorgeous evening sun last night and a warmth fell over the land, a warmth that we haven't felt for a while.
I ran for the garden and for the first time this year I put my hands in the ground and it helped.
It helped to lift a heaviness that I know so many are feeling at the moment brought on by what is happening in the Ukraine, by what we see and read daily on the news and social media.
We look on feeling helpless and yet we scramble to help, we donate, we pray, we hope, we light candles but all the while feeling a little futile and trying not to imagine but imagining.

Imagining that it could be our father, brother, sister, parent, children, it could be any us who like the people of the Ukraine simply chose to live a democratic and peaceful life while taking steps to secure better partnerships for their country.
It literally is "desperate" and the irony is not lost that while we secure our freedom from Covid and move back to a more normal way of living, their world crashes down around them.

So we continue to hope and pray, support and give, all the while hoping that sense or unyielding pressure from the west will secure their safety but in the meantime as we watch on and the sadness weighs heavy, remember to take a moment for yourself, get some fresh air, walk, run, cycle, meditate, garden, wherever it may be but be kind to yourself ❤️.

As storm Eunas approaches to batter this fair Isle, I'm grateful that the expectant ladies have been moved into the sheds for the past two weeks

We are currently feeding the ewes once daily as we attempt to manage weight gain alongside the needs of the mother and her unborn lambs, but feeding will increase to twice daily from next week as we move towards D day on March 28th.

Meanwhile next weeks planned scanning will also bring news of our h***y and first year ewe mothers who will lamb later in the Summer hopefully in the open fields and relatively unaided with grass aplenty and the sun at their back.

Fun times folks,
The count down to lambing and Airbnb'ing begins.

The numbers are in!

After a busy weekend of scanning, we have a numbers for this years lambing season which will begin on March 28th or thereabouts!

The ladies have their own mind and the lambs like all newborns will come when they
are ready but in the meantime we will ensure that the receive ample feed, grass and warmth in the weeks preceding.

To date we have only ever had a maximum of 2 or 3 triplet births but it would seem that trend has well and truly been bucked this year as we await the arrival of 9 sets of triplets, 92 sets of twins and 61 single births.

We will expect a mixture of Wicklow Cheviot lambs and brown face lambs which are a result of crossing a Cheviot Ewe with our Suffolk rams.

We also had 16 empties this year which is higher than we would have hoped but was likely the result of a consciously shortened mating period.
This decision brings both positives and negatives, hopefully it will mean a shorter and tighter lambing period with mother and lambs faster to the field in early spring but with the risk of less pregnancies as we remove the rams in a shorter time.

For us it really is balancing act when it comes to where we place our time but we wait with eager anticipation for the first arrival and usual rush that follows.

Let the fun begin!
