Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of visitors from Excursions Ireland to the Youghal Tourist Office. Our president, Kay Curtin, warmly greeted the guests and treated them to a delicious homemade lemon drizzle cake. The day was filled with delightful activities, including bell ringing by Cliff, music by John Cunningham, and a taste of Guinness with Captain Ahab, straight from the pages of Moby Dick. All in all, it was a wonderfully successful day. 😀🌊
Great to see such positive feedback

It's time for one last Throwback Tuesday of the year—and we’re ending on a high note with a glimpse into the past through an incredible diorama of 17th-century Youghal!
This detailed miniature captures the essence of Youghal in the 1600s, a bustling town alive with trade, life, and history. Every building, street, and ship has been meticulously crafted to transport you back in time to an era when Youghal was a thriving port and a key player in Ireland's rich maritime history.
In these images, you can truly appreciate the scale and extent of the town walls, which once fully encircled the town, offering protection from outside threats. The walls' imposing presence serves as a reminder of Youghals strategic importance in times past.
This diorama is more than just a model—it's a fascinating glimpse into the past, a window into the lives of those who walked the streets, sailed the busy harbor, and built the town we know today. It allows us to visualize what life might have been like in Youghal during the 17th century, capturing a moment in time when the town was both a bustling port and a well-defended stronghold, with its fortified walls, organized streets, and prominent buildings.
So why not come visit this stunning piece at the Heritage Centre? It’s the perfect way to wrap up our Throwback Tuesday series and reflect on the history that shaped the Youghal we love.

Throwback Tuesday: Irish Crew Braves the Northwest Passage
🗞️ Throwback Tuesday takes us back to an incredible adventure captured in a newspaper clipping from Ireland on Sunday, dated December 29, 2002.
This article tells the daring tale of an eight-man Irish crew who, with grit and determination, built their 50ft sailboat in a shed on the west coast of Ireland. The crew, including Paddy Barry, Jarlath Cunnane, Frank Nugent, John Coyle, Mike Brogan, Gearóid Ó Riain, Terry Irvine, and Kevin Cronin (the grandson of Dick Flavin from Strand Street, Youghal), embarked on a journey that echoed the footsteps of Captain Francis Leopold McClintock.
McClintock, in 1959, had solved the mystery of the disappearance of the famed English explorer Lord John Franklin and his predominantly Irish crew, who vanished in 1845 while attempting to navigate the same perilous route: the Northwest Passage. This legendary sea route through the Arctic connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, a path fraught with ice-choked waters and unpredictable, often deadly, weather. It has been the dream of many and the doom of some who dared to sail it.
Life as a sailor isn’t all shanties and serenity; it is a journey often marked by fierce storms and the ever-present shadow of death on the sea. Thankfully, the fate of these eight men wasn’t as grim. Setting sail from Westport at the end of June 2001, they completed their 7,800-mile journey through the Northwest Passage in Vancouver on Canada's west coast by early September.
A special thanks to Catherine Mattis for sharing this fascinating piece of history with us today.
