ב-20 ביולי מלאו 54 שנה למשימת אפולו 11 - הנחיתה האנושית הראשונה על הירח. לכבוד ההישג העצום הזה, בואו נעמיק בכמה עובדות פחות ידועות על המשלחת הפורצת דרך הזו.

1️⃣ חידושי מזון בחלל: במסע שלהם לירח, האסטרונאוטים של אפולו 11 נהנו מארוחות מיוחדות אשר תוכננו במיוחד עבורם כדי לשמור על איזון תזונתי. אבל הארוחה הראשונה של ניל ארמסטרונג ובאז אלדרין על הירח הייתה מעט לא שגרתית: לכל אחד כריך טונה, באדיבות אולדרין, שהבריח אותם על החללית!

2️⃣ Neil Armstrong's Hidden Memento: Neil Armstrong secretly carried a piece of the Wright brothers' first airplane, the Wright Flyer, on his historic journey to the moon, meaning that the first airplane to make it to the skies also became the first plane to make it to space.

3️⃣ The Silver Snoopy Award: Apollo astronauts carried a special mascot, a Snoopy doll, onboard their missions. The Silver Snoopy Award recognized NASA employees who made a significant contribution to safety and mission success.

4️⃣ In Event of Lunar Disaster: The mission was considered so risky that NASA prepared a protocol in the event the crew was lost during the mission. Mission Control would immediately terminate all transmissions from the lander, President Nixon would read a speech referencing Rupert Brooke’s poem “The Soldier,” and there would be a funeral ceremony similar to a burial at sea.

5️⃣ One Small Step for Man: Neil Armstrong's famous quote, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," was accidentally misspoken. He intended to say "a man,” but the "a" was forgotten in the excitement of the moment.

6️⃣ One Nation Under God: The Apollo 11 astronauts left behind a plaque which bears the names of the three astronauts, the President of the United States, the landing date, and a brief message of peace. The Nixon White House had insisted on adding a mention of God on the plaque, so the date was written as July 1969 A.D. (Anno Domini - the Year of Our Lord).

7️⃣ An Unplanned Plaque: The plaque left on the lunar module's ladder was initially meant to be attached inside the lunar module. Due to weight constraints, it found its place on the ladder, welcoming future visitors to the moon.

The Carrington Event, named after the British astronomer Richard Carrington, remains one of the most electrifying episodes in solar history. Join us on a journey back in time as we explore the captivating story of this powerful solar storm and its profound impact on Earth.

🔭 The Carrington Event Unveiled: On September 1-2, 1859, the Sun unleashed an immense coronal mass ejection (CME), expelling billions of tons of charged particles into space. As is always the case with CMEs, these ions shot out from the sun in a narrow beam of intense energy - but unlike at any other time in recorded history, this beam happened to be pointed directly at Earth!
