First Photographic record of Lesser Florican (Sypheotides indica) female from Tadoba –Andhari Tiger Reserve, Chandrapur, Maharashtra

The female of lesser florican recorded in May 2021, in the camera trapopportunistically placed in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra for the Tiger monitoring. It is earlier recorded in Nanded, Nashik, Solapur, Akola and Chandrapur districts in Maharashtra state. The lesser florican is the smallest in the bustard family and the only member of the genus Sypheotides, it is also known as the Tanmor, likh or kharmore and endemic to the Indian subcontinent. The male lesser florican is famous for his beautiful breeding display that attracts wildlife photographers and unfortunately poachers. As Part of species conservation awareness in 2006 Government of India issued a postal ticket on the lesser florican and a magnificent male bird in courtship attire found its place on the mails.
The stunning bustard shape made team enable to discern this elusive bird picture while sorting the data. The Lesser Florican is amongst the smallest bustards of the world with 510-740 gm adult body weight. The male florican measures 45 cm in length whereas the female measures 50 cm.
The Lesser Florican is easy to sight during its breeding period from July to October.
