Encourage cycling to tackle pollution; but Indian motorists need to be sensitised to cyclists' safety

The National Urban Transport Policy, at least on paper, seems to be seized of the importance of walking and cycling, but there is very little yet to show on the ground. Indian cities could take a lesson or two from the enormous success of the public bicycle sharing (PBS) scheme in London, which was launched in 2010. Last year, on average, over 27,800 people hired cycles every day compared to 14,000 in 2010.

“There is a deep-rooted Indian attitude toward pedestrians and cyclists. Owning a car is a big deal and we look down on cyclists,” says CK Venkataraman, chief executive officer, jewellery at Titan Industries, who has been cycling to work in Bengaluru since 1993.

Challenges to cycle @ Dehradun city

Cycling in groups appeared important to three participants when discussing facilitators to cycling. One participant discussed cycling with adults initially to increase their confidence to cycle alone.
“I think I just need more practice, like other, I don’t know, adults I could go with
and then eventually do it alone.”
Another participant mentioned that having a ‘buddy’ to cycle with for longer distance would encourage her to use cycling as a method of transportation.

Safety
Implementing barriers between bicycle and car lanes was mentioned by one participant as a safety precaution that would increase their sense of safety on the road. Another participant stated that safer bicycle racks would encourage them to cycle more often since they would not have to worry about bicycle theft.

Firstly we propose to address the lack of interest and confidence in cycling through bicycle safety education programs either in schools or in the community. One primary point amongst the participants was their low comfort levels in traffic both locally and outside their neighbourhoods. Several participants felt comfortable cycling shorter distances, one even stated 2.5km as a reasonable distance, yet travelling on constricted roads without barriers or on highways were restricting them from cycling.

Several youth stated that their cycling habits would change if it was more prevalent within their family, friend groups, or community.

Another way to encourage cycling would be to work with schools to create an incentive program for adolescents who bike to school. This proposal is still up for discussion as we understand that children may simply live too far, are not permitted to cycle by their parents, or may not have access to a bicycle.

Why Leaders must master the art of facilitation

Having had a lifetime of experience in both leadership roles and facilitation, I have been unaware of how intertwined and complementary the skill sets are. Recently what I have come to realise is how essential facilitation skills are to my leadership practice. Without them, I would be unable to create environments based on safety and trust that allow for innovation and creativity to lead the way.

To shake things up a little, I facilitated a brainstorming session, adopted a beginner's mindset, removed myself from the initial contributions and purely held the process to encourage participation from my team using the time-honoured technique of asking the question “Yes and?”

Facilitation skills are indispensable for effective leadership due to their capacity to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and navigate complexities within teams and organisations.

Additionally, facilitation skills are crucial for fostering a culture of open communication and trust within teams. Effective facilitators promote transparency and encourage honest dialogue, which fosters stronger relationships among team members and enhances overall team cohesion. Moreover, by actively listening to team members' concerns and feedback, facilitative leaders demonstrate empathy and build rapport, enhancing morale and engagement.

Leaders who possess strong facilitation skills are better equipped to inspire and empower their teams, leading to improved performance, greater resilience, and sustained success in today's dynamic and complex environment.

The Trust Walk Activity is a team building activity involving leadership and lots of trust as people navigate each other around obstacles. Find a good location with some obstacles, but nothing dangerous.

Communication and trust-building exercises. These activities aim to build up trust between the participants and ask them to co-operate on various problem-solving activities. They aim to demonstrate the importance of good communication and to develop the young people's verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

The game involves leadership and confidence building, as blindfolded participants must trust their interlocutor. The blindfolded person must follow the instructions given to avoid colliding with obstacles.
