A great day for India for Beginners

On March 8, 14 students and 3 faculty from Texas A&M University (TAMU) arrived in India to begin a 12-day tour of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur as part of a study abroad program.

I couldn’t be more pleased that India for Beginners is hosting this fantastic group of people — who are in here in India with a very open-minded and enthusiastic attitude to learn as much as they can about the culture.

A million thanks to Dr Robert “Jay” Woodward of TAMU for contacting me after finding my blog online in 2022, and for having the confidence in us to trust us with this important assignment. It’s the biggest project we’ve taken on as a company, as it also includes a virtual study program (for which we are making video modules).

I spent the weekend with the group as they visited important monuments AND had a lot of fun partaking in cultural immersion acitvities such as learning to play cricket and taking a Bollywood dance class.

Me, Anjani and Ujjwal are absolutely loving this experience.

It’s extremely satisfying to watch these bright, energetic students throw themselves into the trip and soak it all up.

Perfect Delhi days

There are only a few weeks every year — starting in late February and again late October — when the weather in Delhi is perfect. Warm, sunny, blue skies and low polluton levels.

Today was one of those days — and I was lucky enough to spend it with our wonderful India for Beginners travellers Nicolle and Leanne from Australia.

We started the day in the loving embrace of my favourite homestay, Prakash Kutir DEL, where we enjoyed a lavish breakfast of lcoal specialties such as besan chilla, homemade yogurt and chutneys, pakoras, and masala chai.

Then, we went with our guide Ramesh to see two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Qutab Minar (12th century) and Humayun’s Tomb (16th century). Walking through the Qutab site, visitors get a sense of history and the development of Delhi over time as it passed from period to period, and conqueror to conqueror.

I like visitors to India to see Humayun’s Tomb before they go to the Taj Mahal as it was a precursor in designa nd style. It’s a wonderful site on a large and leafy property in central Delhi, and well worth seeing, but it does not have anywhere near the grandeur of the Taj Mahal. Once you have seen Humayun’s Tomb, I feel you can appreciate the Taj Mahal more.

And then we went to the fabulous Jamun in Lodhi Colony for lunch, but there are no photos because we were too hungry! Jamun is a stylish restaurant with a charming atmosphere that serves regional dishes from across India. It’s a very good introduction to Indian food and I like taking guests there.

A perfect day with wonderful guests in Delhi!

A wonderful day in Jaipur with a fabulous group of friends touring India with India for Beginners. I had the great privilege of spending the day with Maree, Jenni and Susan and our great guide Mahesh. We started in the Pink City at The Tattoo Cafe for chai and a view of the Hawa Mahal. Then we went to magnificent Amer Fort. Back to the old city to visit Jantar Mantar, the famous 18th century observatory. And finally lunch at the elegant Samode Haveli. A perfect day in Jaipur!

Thanks so much to my team Anjani Nandan and Ujjwal for arranging a great day. Even the weather was perfect.

India is HOT 🔥

Celebrities from Mick Jagger to Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones to singer Dua Lipa were all in India in December. Mick apparently sang in Kolkata and Dua Lipa went to Dera Amer Wilderness Camp — a place outside of Jaipur where you can meet rescued elephants Lakshmi and Rangmala. Shally Makin and I were there in August to check it out as we are taking the India for Beginners Women-Only Holi Tour there in March!

Creating the Women-Only Holi Tour, Part 7: Celebrating Holi safely

In July, my colleague Shally Makin and I set off on a trip across North India to research and design the India for Beginners Women-Only Holi Tour. In this series, we are pulling back the curtain to give you a glimpse of our research trip and the wonderful people, places, and plans we have created for the lucky women who have signed up for the Women-Only Holi Tour (March 18 - 29, 2024).

It’s not India’s biggest festival, but it’s the most colourful — and probably the one most beloved by foreigners. Many people have “experience Holi in India” on their bucket lists, and for good reason.
The Holi Festival starts with a bonfire the night before, and then most of the fun happens the next morning. People throw coloured powder at each other, and spray each other with water guns filled with coloured water, or throw balloons filled with water at each other.

The festivities also include music, dancing, and of course food, including Holi delicacies such as Gujia, a deep-fried dumpling made with flour and stuffed with a mixture of sweetened dried fruits, and Thandai Lassi, a delicious sweetened yogurt drink.

The Holi Festival is a holiday best celebrated with family and friends, especially if you are a female and a foreigner. And this is what we’re going to do, too. In the past, we have played Holi privately at an ashram in Rishikesh.

This year, we will be celebrating Holi at a private party hosted by a family in their charming boutique homestay in central Jaipur. We will be treated to all the Holi traditions – from throwing coloured powder to dancing to live music, and from eating treats to a fabulous multi-course brunch. And all in a safe, private environment!

For all my best Holi tips, please read: https://breathedreamgo.com/what-you-need-to-know-about-holi-in-india/

Creating the Women-Only Holi Tour, Part 6: Shopping in Jaipur

In July, my colleague Shally Makin and I set off on a trip across North India to research and design the India for Beginners Women-Only Holi Tour. In this series, we are pulling back the curtain to give you a glimpse of our research trip and the wonderful people, places, and plans we have created for the lucky women who have signed up for the Women-Only Holi Tour (March 18 - 29, 2024).

Did you know that Jaipur was designed to be a commercial centre? The city was founded by Maharaja Jai SIngh II in 1727 on scientific principles as one of the first planned cities. The design included commercial areas, and the planners issued an invitation for artisans to move into the city and set up workshops and bazaars.

To this day, Jaipur is a city of artisans, workshops, markets, and bazaars. It is also a shopper’s paradise known for block-print textiles, gemstones and jewellery, handmade leather shoes, arts and crafts, furniture, and so much more.

As part of the Women-Only Holi Tour we will spend 3 full days in Jaipur exploring both the historical sites and many of the arts and crafts as well — and of course we will go shopping!

On our third day in Jaipur, we will explore the markets of Jaipur for unique souvenirs and handicrafts to take back home. Lunch will be at Anokhi Cafe, inside the flagship Anokhi store, and dinner will be at Bar Palladio, a beautiful, chic, and trendy restaurant in the heart of Jaipur.

Creating the Women-Only Holi Tour, Part 5: The Pink City

In July, my colleague Shally Makin and I set off on a trip across North India to research and design the India for Beginners Women-Only Holi Tour. In this series, we are pulling back the curtain to give you a glimpse of our research trip and the wonderful people, places, and plans we have created for the lucky women who have signed up for the Women-Only Holi Tour (March 18 - 29, 2024).

How can you not love The Pink City! Jaipur is the city of artists and artisans, of maharajahs and princesses, of Rajputs and warriors, of history and fable.

Though not *really* pink, it’s a fabulously colourful city, a global gem centre, the home of block printing, a paradise for jewellery and textiles, and some of the best shopping on the planet.

Jaipur means staying in heritage hotels and former palaces, glamorous buildings that make you feel like a Queen. Jaipur means exploring historical forts, and wandering bazaars laden with treasures like Ali Baba’s cave.

Shally and I love Jaipur and this year we will be staying 4 days in the city at a heritage style hotel and celebrating Holi at a private event. We will have loads of time to wander, and shop, and soak up the atmosphere of this special city.

Who else shares our love for Jaipur?

Creating the Women-Only Holi Tour, Part 3: Utsav Camp, Sariska Tiger Reserve

In July, my colleague Shally Makin and I set off on a trip across North India to research and design the India for Beginners Women-Only Holi Tour. In this series, we are pulling back the curtain to give you a glimpse of our research trip and the wonderful people, places, and plans we have created for the lucky women who have signed up for the Women-Only Holi Tour (March 18 - 29, 2024).

Ranthambore is the most popular tiger reserve in the Golden Triangle area, but Shally and I wanted something different for our special tour. We decided to check out Utsav camp Sariska and Sariska National Park – and discovered that we loved both the beautiful wildlife lodge and the landscape around Sariska. This area seems relatively untouched, compared to Ranthambore, and offers so much to explore. Shortly after arriving at Utsav Camp, we went on a twilight safari in the buffer zone, among the picturesque boulders, and Shally almost immediately spotted a leopard!

Utsav Camp is a very special place. Made almost entirely with natural and local materials that seem to have sprung organically from the earth, Utsav Camp is also stylish and luxurious. Luxury lovers and wildlife enthusiasts alike will love it. A beautiful swimming pool and well-appointed cottages are balanced with a wide range of sustainability measures.

On the Holi Tour, we will have two wildlife safaris in Sariska, a sundowner experience with High Tea, and time to relax and enjoy the lodge amenities and environment.

Creating the Women-Only Holi Tour, Part 2: We love Delhi

In July, my colleague Shally Makin and I set off on a trip across North India to research and design the India for Beginners Women-Only Holi Tour. In this series, we are pulling back the curtain to give you a glimpse of our research trip and the wonderful people, places, and plans we have created for the lucky women who have signed up for the Women-Only Holi Tour (March 18 - 29, 2024).

The tour starts in Delhi, as many India tours do, because a large percentage of international flights land in Delhi. Indira Gandhi International Airport is the busiest airport in India and the 9th busiest in the world. But that’s not the only reason.

We love Delhi!

I know very well that Delhi has a bad reputation and is generally not popular with tourists. However, I would like to change that perception.

When I first came to India in Dec 2005, I was lucky enough to have a soft landing. From my first day, I stayed in a posh South Delhi enclave with an old Delhi family and they shared with me their memories, tips, and appreciation for the city. My relationship with Delhi started on the best possible footing.

Since then I have spent untold hours exploring the city and our itinerary covers many of my favourite places:
Lodi Garden, a green oasis
Khan Market, upscale shopping
Humayun’s Tomb, UNESCO site and precursor to the Taj Mahal
India Gate, symbol of India
Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi fun
Qutub Minar, ancient monument

I could write an entire post on each of these spectacular places. Each represents the leafy green and deeply historic city at its best. We have deliberately focused on the places that will make you love Delhi, too!

And in March, the pollution levels are low, the skies are blue, the days are warm and the entire city blooms with a riot of colour.

Special and Spectacular -- Creating the Women-Only Holi Tour, Part 1: Prakash Kutir

In July, my colleague Shally Makin and I set off on a trip across North India to research and design the India for Beginners Women-Only Holi Tour.

We wanted it to be special and spectacular.

We poured a lot of effort into choosing our itinerary, hotels, and activities — and especially where and how we would celebrate Holi, the rambunctious Festival of Colour that takes place in March every year. It’s one of India’s most popular and beloved festivals, and the favourite of visitors to India.

I am going to pull back the curtain and give you a glimpse of our research trip and the wonderful people, places, and plans we have created for the lucky women who have signed up for the Women-Only Holi Tour (March 18 - 29, 2024).

Home away from home

The first stop on the Women-Only Holi Tour is greeting everyone, introducing them gently to India, and making them feel at home. We do this by meeting everyone at our Delhi hotel, Prakash Kutir bed-and-breakfast, my favourite homestay in India.

Prakash Kutir is a 7-bedroom homestay in trendy Hauz Khas, an area of prosperous South Delhi. Staying at Prakash Kutir will give you a warm welcome to India as you will be immersed in the home of an Indian family and eat home-cooked food lovingly prepared by Mrs Savita Gupta, the lady of the house.

The family is the foundation of society in India, and starting your tour in the loving embrace of an Indian family home is the best way to ease into travel in India — a country known for giving newly arrived visitors a healthy dose of culture shock and sensory overload.

We will stay at Prakash Kutir for 3 nights as we explore Delhi, India’s fascinating capital city. On Day 2, we will be treated to a dinner cooked by the very talented Savita Gupta that features delicious local specialities, lightly spiced.

We still have more spaces on the Women-Only Holi Tour (March 18 - 29, 2024), so don’t delay, sign up and come with us on the trip of a lifetime!

Kay loves Delhi!

This week India for Beginners is hosting photographer Kay Beaton from the USA. Though Kay has been to India before, she wanted some extra support to travel in North India and especially Delhi — a city she has avoided on all her previous trips.

We started our trip by easing her gently with two nights at The Birders Inn and a morning safari in Keoladeo bird sanctuary at Bharatpur. We saw a Golden Jackal, several Nilgai, and lots of incredible birds including trees filled with nesting Painted Storks. It was mind blowing!

In the afternoon we visited nearby Fatehpur Sikri, an abandoned city built by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1569. Our peaceful trip was briefly disturbed by aggressive auto drivers at the entrance to the monument but our wonderful driver Mahipal stepped and became our big bhai (brother) for the afternoon.

Next stop, Delhi! Kay Beaton checked in to Prakash Kutir — of course — in Hauz Khas and we spent the afternoon at Hauz Khas village, ending the evening on a rooftop watching the sunset.

Next day, we took her on a guided tour of some of Delhi’s greenest and most beautiful places — Humayun’s Tomb, Lodhi Garden, and India Gate.

Though she’s only been in Delhi a few days, she has already revised her opinion and has discovered magical moments here in the big city.

Thanks for travelling with us Kay!

Happy Dhanteras!

Today is Dhanteras, the start of the 5-day Diwali Festival in India. Diwali is basically the equivalent of Christmas in India! Everyone is lighting up their homes, giving each other gifts -- lots of sweets! -- and partaking in a wide range of rituals from shopping for gold to Lakshmi pujas.

Diwali is a time when families get together and as usual I will be celebrating with my two Indian families in South Delhi. This is now a longstanding tradition!

Here's my blog post all about How to celebrate Diwali in India: https://breathedreamgo.com/how-to-celebrate-diwali-in-india/

If you would like to experience Diwali in India, India for Beginners can make that happen for you!

Getting a 5-star review on Google for India for Beginners is the best high! Tracy was a wonderful guest who took our advice and went to Anand Prakash Ashram to study Yoga in Rishikesh with Yogrishi Vishvketu -- that's where this beautiful photo was taken. Thanks to everyone on the team who made this happen -- Anjani, Ujjwal, and everyone at Anand Prakash Yoga Ashram.

"I loved my trip to India and working with India for Beginners. Travelling as a single woman was a little nerve-wracking but with my itinerary in place and having a private drive, I really felt at ease the entire time. With my requests they built a great itinerary for me. I loved the ashram and Rishikesh, shopping was really great. Taj Mahal was definitely a highlight. My driver was so sweet. Everything was great. If I ever go to India again, I will definitely use them. I highly recommend them." Tracy C., USA

Yesterday was the inaugural India for Beginners Shopping Tour!

I took a group of 5 American women shopping in Delhi and we had a fun time — both learning about textile crafts such as the making of *real pashmina shawls* and traditional saree weaving AND buying some very beautiful and authentic fabric, shawls, and clothes. Plus we stopped for lunch at Jamun, one of my favourite restaurants in Delhi. It was a great experience, everyone had a fabulous time, (especially me!) and we were all fast friends by the end. It was their first day in India and a both a soft landing and a great introduction to Indian culture.

So who wants to go shopping in India?

Transformation in India

This is so exciting! Our wonderful India for Beginners traveller, photographer Leslie Hanes, wrote a blog post about her transformational journey in India. Leslie was on the Holi Tour of India with us, and also travelled on her own with us for several weeks. I met her at the beginning of her journey, during the Holi Festival, and at the end — and I can testify to her transformation. She truly loved India and opened up like a flower!

This photo below of Leslie and I dipping into the Ganga in Rishikesh after celebrating Holi at Anand Prakash Yoga Ashram is mine; the rest are Leslie’s.

You can read about her journey in her own words here, in Part One: https://indiaforbeginners.com/a-place-of-transformation-part-1/

Happy World Tourism Day!

We are celebrating with this fabulous five-star review (on Google) for India for Beginners -- from our wonderful guest Charlene, who travelled with us in September:

"Intrepid female travellers! Do NOT hesitate to follow your dreams to explore India! Book your trip with India for Beginners. Whether SINGLE or with friends, this is definitely the way to go. Our trip to India with India for Beginners started with superb communication (many agencies we reached out to never even responded). The interactions during the planning phase were hand-in-glove. The responsive staff acted as the "foil" to rein in our ambitious, broad-reaching plans and tailor a reality-based package. Desires were satisfied and streamlined to maximize time, meet scheduling needs, and actualize our dreams!

Everything came together: Safe (with a capital "S"), seamless itinerary, competent drivers, educated, experienced, and expert tour guides versed in their particular historical region – leaving us to comfortably sit back and truly enjoy every facet of the trip. Our focus was the history and culture of UNESCO sites in India. The tour guides listened and responded to personal desires and worked to incorporate every last detail to make this a one-of-a-kind adventure.

The accommodations India for Beginners chose were superb and exceeded expectations – in fact, some were historical treasures. Our guides and drivers were very special and each had a great sense of humour. I cannot say enough about how well-cared for I felt. The staff exhibited dedication, responsibility, and genuine concern for our well-being as they helped us meet our travel goals. The cost was reasonable and worth every penny.

From Tamil Nadu to the Golden Triangle, I felt nothing but a warm, welcoming reception from those with whom we came in contact with. For me, the smiles, warmth, and generosity will last a lifetime. I have not one bad memory.

The huge country of India beckons. It can be a daunting undertaking on how and where to start. Our mantra was: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! There is so much to see, discover, and learn about this wonderful country. It is breathtaking in every sense.

Let India for Beginners point you in the right direction and help you paint YOUR picture. Whether you are just getting started or have advanced Indian travelling experience, India for Beginners will make it happen and you will not be disappointed."

Another 5-star review for India for Beginners!

"As beginners, navigating India seemed daunting, but with the right guidance from India for Beginners we had a journey that was unforgettable and life changing. India is such a big country with regions that are culturally different that it would have been overwhelming if we were to plan the trip ourselves. Instead, Mariellen and her team curated an itinerary that was designed with our preferences and interests in mind. And during our trip, India for Beginners were there to answer any questions that we may have had.

One of the highlights of our tours was the presence of knowledgeable local guides who accompanied us on every excursion. These guides were not just experts in the history and culture of the regions we explored, but they were also passionate storytellers who brought India's vibrant past and present to life. I also can’t say enough about our full-time driver. He was so personable and fun that long drives flew by and introduced us to hidden gems and local experiences that we would have otherwise missed.

We traveled for 2 ½ weeks in late Dec. and early Jan. 2023. One of the most memorable nights was when our hotel, Kaldan Samudhra Palace hosted a truly “New Year’s Extravaganza” that rivaled any that we attended.

Thanks to India for Beginners, our journey through India became not just a vacation but an immersive, enlightening, and unforgettable experience. They handled all the logistics, ensuring our safety and comfort, so that we were able to focus on soaking in the beauty, embracing the chaos and savoring the flavors of India." - Chee and Andrew, USA
