Its quite astonishing how time changes the landscape around us. Here is an example of how a Tomb has been turned into a residential complex. Mehrauli has always been a collage of historic architecture that has slowly morphed and adapted to the modern life. Yet in their own way, these buildings have maintained their character and value.

Once a majestic display of architecture, this archway near the northern gate of the Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki Dargah now stands as an example of how important it is for us to preserve our history. The cracks on this archway not only represent the many changes Delhi has gone through, but also the diverse and rich story of Mehrauli.

A door may seem like a simple gateway for those who seek to reach a destination, but what most of us forget to notice is the stories that lie within that gateway. A simple door like this may not seem as significant as a grand monument, but it has always led travellers to a world full of wonder and history. So come on this journey with us, to find what mysteries await on the other side.

The Zafar Mahal is located near to the west gate of the dargah of Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki. It was built in 1842 by Akbar Shah II. Built as a three-storied structure in red sandstone embellished with marble, it opens with a large wooden gate called the Hathi (Elephant) Gate. It was built to allow fully decorated elephants with the howdah to pass through.

Explore. Connect. Restore.

Mehrauli, sitting in the shadow of the Qutub Minar, is Delhi's most historic neighborhood. Its dotted with the remains of kingdoms from the last thousand years, housing six major world religions, and bustling with modern-day life. The juxtaposition of new against old creates an incredible journey through time. Project Mehrauli is a new initiative of Blue Darwaza Travel that invites partnerships with the people of Mehrauli. Our vision is to preserve and restore the honor of historic Mehrauli and its people. We aim to do that through a social travel model that benefits the community while creating authentic, educational, and fun adventures for travelers in this often overlooked area of Delhi.
