Today is a special day - March 21, 2023.

Astronomically, it is vernal (spring) equinox when the Sun shines directly on the equator and the day and night are of equal duration all over the globe. From now on, the Sun would move further northward and the days would start getting longer in the northern hemisphere.

This day is also the beginning of the Iranian new year and is called as Nauroz/Nowruz (the new year's day). It is celebrated in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and by Parsis in India and elsewhere. All the best to all of them.

Today is also special for all those who follow the Sanatan Dharma, and for all those who practice Jyotisha or Vedic astrology, anywhere in the world. This day today, the soli-lunar year starts at 22:53:01 hours IST and marks the beginning of the new year. The time of onset of this new year is the moment of commencement of the Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (CSP), the first lunar date of the brighter half of the lunar cycle, in the month of Chaitra, the twelfth month of the Indian calendar. Those who know Jyotisha understand that this moment starts when the Sun and the Moon in Meena rashi (Pisces) are exactly conjunct, marking the end of the Amavasya and the beginning of the Shukla Paksha. This time of commencement of CSP mentioned above holds true for the whole globe with appropriate modifications for the local and standard times in different locations in the world. Horoscopic charts prepared for the above-mentioned moment of time, for the capitals of the different countries, would throw light on the destinies of the different countries during the coming year.

As per the standard system, the Pratipada would continue to operate on March 22, 2023 at the time of sunrise. So, all activities relevant to Pratipada would be performed on March 22, 2023. Thus, the Navartris would start from tomorrow morning and continue for nine days. Since the Pratipada operates at the time of sunrise on March 22 which happens to be a Wednesday, the lord of Wednesday, i.e., Mercury, would be considered the king of the year.
The classics ascribe the following results to Mercury as the king of the year:

"Fortune smiles on those proficient in the art of jugglery, hypnotism and magic, miners, townsmen, accountants, musicians, painters, writers, mathematicians, and wielders of weapons. Kings exchange gifts to enhance friendship and harmony. Rearing of cattle, agriculture and trade thrive. Vedic studies are indulged in. Justice is administered scrupulously. People engage themselves in spiritual studies and science of logic. Jesters, envoys, poets, eunuchs, children, those dealing with perfumes, and those living near bridges, water and mountains are happy. Herbs grow in abundance."

These results are vastly modified by the disposition of the grahas in the CSP chart. Would this kingship of Mercury end the Russia-Ukraine war? Would harmony really prevail? We shall have to wait and see. It may be of some interest for those who are into the science of omens to take note of the fact that a severe earthquake has just jolted us. The buildings in Delhi trembled but the epicentre of the quake is in Afghanistan. It happened just a few minutes bdfore the actual commencment of the CSP. Does it mean the end of the previous year or a foreboding for the new year?

Whatever be in store for us during the new year, it is time to wish the best of health, happiness and prosperity to everyone. May God's grace be upon all of us.

While the Mahabharata war was over, the grandsire Bhishma Pitamaha lay mortally wounded on the bed of arrows which had pierced his whole body. The great warrior stayed alive, the piercing arrows supporting his body above the ground. His father had granted him the boon of control over his time of dying. Pierced by arrows from head to toe, the Pitamaha had chosen to postpone his death till the Sun-god completed His southerly course (Dakshinayana) and commenced His northerly course (Uttarayana). During this wait for the Sun-god to change His course, the Pitamaha taught the Pandavas, particularly their eldest Yuddhishthira, the subtlest principles of Dharma and statecraft. His discourses form what is called as the Shanti-Parva of the Mahabharata.

On the stipulated day, the grandsire bade farewell to the blind Dhritarashtra, lord Krishna, sage Vyasa, the Pandavas, and their kin that had gathered there. Then he went silent and, by the strength of yoga, he interned his mind and senses inside his being. His 'Prana', concentrated within his body, started proceeding headward. As his 'Prana' started quitting each of his body parts one by one, the arrows piercing the affected body part started falling off, and his wounds started healing instantaneously. In a trice, all his arrows had fallen off and his body completely healed. Then the 'Prana' or life energy trapped in his body exited from the top of his head (Brahmarandhra) and he finally left this mortal world to join the realm of the Vasus whence he came. Those around saw a flash of lightening issuing forth from his head and disappearing in the sky.

This day, when the Sun starts its northerly course according to the sidereal system, coincides with the Sun's entry into the sidereal sign Makara, the tenth sign of the zodiac. This day is called as Makara Samkranti because it is also means the beginning of the tenth solar month of the Indian system. It is considered an auspicious occasion for charities, worship and starting studies.

The Sun enters Makara today, January 14, 2023, at around 8:46 pm (IST). People bathe in flowing waters on this sacred occasion and worship the Sun-god. For those interested in Mundane astrology, this is an imortant moment. A horoscopic chart prepared for the moment of Sun's entry into Makara, for the capital of any country, would throw significant light on the destiny of that country, and this chart would be valid for the next three months, till the Sun exits the sign Meena and enters Mesha, in the month of April.
