NRDC - Transforming Innovative Research into Profitable Technology
The accelerating spread of new technologies in a competitive environment world-wide makes it imperative that new ideas and technologies are identified at their source in the scientific world, carried forward by technological innovation and piloted into commercial production. NRDC is India's premier service enterprise whose busines
s is to be the identifier, the carrier and the pilot of technology transfer. For over fifty years, NRDC has played a key role in speeding the commercial applications of research and in effecting the transfer of technology from laboratory to enterprise. NRDC guides and assists the entrepreneur in executing his technological business plans. NRDC works in close conjunction with over 200 national R & D laboratories and has licensed over 2000 technologies (4800 Agreements) for commercial exploitation, of which nearly 1000 are in production with a current annual turnover of about Rs.12,000 million (Rs.12 billion). Technologies licensed by NRDC cover areas such as agriculture, horticulture, sericulture, food, agro-processing, bio-technology, chemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, electronics, instrumentation, building materials, manufacturing techniques and utility processes including pollution control. Major Activities of NRDC
COMMERCIAL
Development and Commercialization of Technologies are being under taken under the Programme for Development of Technologies for Commercialization (PDTC) with the objectives of:
• Technical evaluation of the innovations / technologies.
• Licensing of technologies to companies and end user organizations.
• Providing grants for development of Technologies to R&D laboratories for setting up pilot plants to validate or scale-up laboratory processes prior to commercialization.
• Participation in equity of early stage ventures.
• Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) consultancy to R&D Institutes and Corporate.
• Export of Indian technologies / know-how and services.
• Ex*****on of turnkey projects abroad based on indigenous technologies. PROMOTIONAL
Promotion and Commercialization of Inventions
• Awarding meritorious inventions.
• Assisting innovator and inventors in patenting and commercializing their inventions.
• Popularization of science highlighting inventions by bringing out magazine “Awishkar” (monthly) in Hindi. Promotion & Development of Household & Rural Technology
• To identify, prove and demonstrate selected rural & household technologies.
• Assisting in commercialization of selected rural & household technologies. Promotion of Export of Technology
• Projecting India as a source of technology.
• To prepare publicity material like catalogues, brochures, multimedia CD-ROMs giving information about the technologies suitable for export.
• To prepare feasibility reports and basic engineering design packages for the Information on Technology Transfer.
• Organizing training programs related to Technology Development and Transfer.
• Participating in exhibition, publishing periodicals, arranging audiovisuals to popularize indigenous technologies, both at home and abroad. Disseminating Information
NRDC, as a service organization, constantly endeavors to encourage inventive talent in the country and to promote development and utilization of results of indigenous research with a view to accelerate the technological and economic self-reliance of the nation. To achieve these ends, NRDC brings out the following publications to promote its technologies by disseminating information through them:
• Under its invention Promotion Program brings out popular Science and Technology monthly magazine - Awishkar in Hindi. This magazine provides information on science and technology to entrepreneurs, scientists, technologists, industrialists, inventors, students and the public.
• NRDC Processes - A publication brought out periodically, contains lists of available processes classified based on various disciplines of technology.
• Pamphlets and booklets are also brought out on selected and successful NRDC technologies from time-to-time. To create awareness on the range of technologies and services that are available from India, NRDC participates in exhibitions, seminars, workshops and entrepreneurship development programs both in India and abroad. The Sources of NRDC's Technologies
India has an extensive network of about 2500 R&D institutions, mostly Government supported. These institutions cover virtually every branch and facet of research and technology ranging from paleo-botany to spacecraft. The institutions in this network are the primary sources of NRDC's portfolio of marketable technologies. In pursuance of its corporate goals, NRDC has forged links with, and between the scientific and industrial communities in India and abroad. Corporation has formal arrangements with many of the major R& D organizations in the country for the commercialization of know-how developed in their laboratories. Technology Marketing Experience
NRDC has accumulated experience in matching its portfolio of source points of technology to their potential markets in about 4600 cases, both in India and abroad. Countries from South often find Indian technologies compatible to their needs. Their simplicity, smaller plant sizes, lower investment levels, ability to utilize local resources and employment generation capacity, make them "appropriate technology". As a result of NRDC's assistance to its licensees in identifying potential clients, providing marketing support and obtaining product certificates from authorities in different countries, where these are required, the NRDC licensees have been able to export their products to both the developing and developed countries. Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre (IPFC) at Bengaluru
The IPFC has been setup at Bengaluru jointly by Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, GoI and NRDC. The objective of this Centre is to provide following intellectual property rights related services to MSME sector:
• Searching, mapping, etc. with respect to patents, trademarks and industrial designs
• Basic information to file applications for grant of patent, trademarks, industrial designs and geographical Indications
• Guidance in filing IP applications with National/ International agencies
• Collaboration with potential clients for technology up-gradation, tie-ups, scale-ups, etc
• Advise on legal remedies on infringement issues
Support to Inventors
The Programme for Inspiring Inventors & Innovators (PIII) of NRDC endeavors to stimulate the spirit of inventivity and innovation not only among scientific and technical personnel and industrial workers but also amongst craftsmen, artisans and the emerging youth in the community. In order to harness their creative talent for the benefit of the nation, the IPP covers a wide range of activities, including:
• Prize awards for meritorious inventions
• Facilitation for patenting innovations of R&D organizations and universities both in India and abroad
• Facilitation to inventors to commercialize their patented inventions
• NRDC gives cash awards under three categories and certificates to inventors by way of recognition of meritorious work. The awards are announced every year for meritorious inventions. The cash awards are exempted from Income Tax. NRDC also helps inventors in arranging the commercial exploitation of their patented inventions. Reaching out to Rural India
Rural India with its urgent need for technological inputs, provides a vast market for new agricultural processes and services. NRDC promotes technologies that are particularly suited to local needs. Examples include: the agro-waste utilization paint derived from the latex of Euphorbia plants, the mud block making machine and the use of blue-green algae for nitrogen fixation and farm soil enrichment. Efforts are being made to reduce the drudgery of women in their daily lives, to provide literacy aids, safe drinking water, low cost housing, sanitation, better agricultural implements and post-harvest technologies, solar pumps, heaters, solar cookers and solar dryers, cement from paddy husk ash and to provide employment by the utilizations of farm wastes. NRDC has also set up 52 rural technology demonstration cm training centers in various parts of the country to give hands-on training and demonstrations to artisans and technicians living in rural areas.
