It’s nesting time for several species in central India and a great time for bird lovers to visit and see their favourite species of birds in action.
Barbets are arboreal birds which nest in tree cavities, and lay their eggs. 1 to 5 eggs are laid at daily intervals, with incubation lasting between 13 to 17 days.
Both adults excavate the hole in the nesting log, creating an entrance tunnel and an enlarged nesting chamber, which they do so very swiftly!
The opening of the nest is usually face down and seems to house an unending number of birds.

Deer antler shedding is a fascinating natural phenomenon that occurs annually in many deer species. We share 15 unknown facts behind this behavior;
- Antlers are bony structures that grow on the heads of male deer.
- They are composed of living tissue and are the fastest-growing type of mammalian bone.
- Antlers start growing in the spring and continue to develop throughout the summer months.
- As the antlers develop, they are covered in a soft tissue called velvet, which contains blood vessels and nerves.
- While the exact triggers may differ among species and individual deer, one significant factor is the photoperiod, which refers to the duration of daylight.
- Reduced daylight exposure triggers a decrease in testosterone levels, which leads to the weakening of the tissue connecting the antlers to the deer’s skull.
- The first sign of antler shedding is the drying up of the velvet.
- Deer may rub their antlers against trees and bushes to hasten the removal of the velvet, relieving the itchiness caused by its presence.
- Once the velvet is shed, the antlers harden and detach from the deer’s skull.
- After shedding, the deer’s pedicles, the bony structures from which the antlers grow, remain on its skull.
- These pedicles serve as the foundation for new antler growth in the following spring.
- Shedding allows deer to grow new, larger antlers each year, which are important for various aspects of their lives.
- During the mating season, male deer, or bucks, use their antlers to establish dominance and compete for mates. Larger antlers provide an advantage in this competition, as they demonstrate the buck’s strength and genetic fitness.
- Shedding and regrowing antlers ensure that bucks have a chance to improve their antler size and quality with each passing year.
- Antler shedding also helps deer conserve energy during harsh winter months reducing the deer’s weight, making it easier for them to navigate through snow-covered landscapes and find food.
Rukhad serves as a large animal corridor between Seoni (Madhya Pradesh) and Nagpur (Maharashtra) sector of the National Highway 44 (NH44), and the entire stretch passes through the Pench Tiger Reserve. It is one of the most important wildlife corridors in the country connecting Pench and Kanha Tiger Reserves.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has constructed guide walls and nine underpasses of 50-750 meters in width at various places on the 37km road passing through the jungles.
While the road has made commuting easier for humans, the five underpasses and four minor bridges have ensured that the movement of animals is not disrupted.
The underpasses not only prevent any unprecedented accidents of animals but also provide a smooth movement, allowing them to freely move around in their natural habitat.
Kudos to the @nhai_official & MP forest department who joined hands to make this project, an exemplary reference for the rest of the world to follow.
Due to this Rukhad sanctuary has come back to life and big cat sightings have significantly increased. Many tigers which were earlier seen in the main area of Pench have been recorded in and around Rukhad. And the best part is that it’s open through out the year.

Tigers and leopards have always been an eye-catching sight for all the wildlife buffs, yet the broad list of fauna has many more jewels. One of them being an endangered species of dog – Wild dogs or Dhole.
Let’s learn more about these charismatic carnivores;
- Wild dogs have been romping around the planet for over 12,000 years now, which means they have been hanging around since the Last Ice Age
- This apex predator has its range in the vast habitat of Bhutan, Southern China, India, Malaysia, Tibet, and Mongolia and throughout Southeast Asia
- There are about 10 to 11 subspecies of dholes which are found all across the globe
- Two are listed as endangered and two are on the verge of extinction. However, the Asiatic wild dog is the most common subspecies found in India
- The term ‘Dholes’ originated from the ancient Asiatic origin; which means “reckless” or “daring”, and it did fit in with their unbridled, courageous personalities
- Having several names including Asiatic Wild Dog, Indian Wild Dog, Red Dog, Mountain Wolf, they are known to have about 64 native names in 38 languages, which pretty much depicts their habitat range
- Unlike other species of dogs which have 42 teeth, Dholes lack in one pair of lower molars and their upper molar only have one cusp, i.e. a fold of the cardiac valve
