Day 8
Cairo is eye-opening, maddening, exciting and frustrating all at once. It assaults the senses, but it has Giza and that one positive far outweighs any negatives.
So we went back to the far end of Giza to feel something heart tugging again. This time it was to applaud the Step pyramid at Saqqara and admire the fabulous relief work inside the tomb of the Mastaba of Kagemni.
The 4,700 year old Step pyramid was built in the 27th century B.C. for the third dynasty pharaoh Djoser. It is deemed as the oldest stone structure of its size in the world!!!
After a while dates and years blur and deep down one knows that whatever meets the eye is archaic, precious and has contributed exceptionally to humankind. But I digress....
We checked into the Holiday Inn City Stars, Heliopolis which has a giant shopping mall adjacent to it. Everyone was delighted. It was the icing on the cake and everyone shopped to their heart's content almost until midnight. They excitedly showed off their purchases to each other and exchanged stories of the hard bargains they had driven. Kalyan is carrying home Annubis himself! From one doctor to another!
Tomorrow we will visit the Egyptian civilization museum, venture into the Mummy's room and then head back home.
Team Kalyan has emerged overall champions and have been awarded vials of the famous Cleopatra perfume by Travelicious.
Few countries are as evocative as Egypt. Few travel groups are as lively as what we have this time.
May Amun Ra always shine upon them.
Signing off...

Day 7
We explored four spectacular tombs in the Valley of the Kings. The interior of each tomb was embellished with colourful hieroglyphs that told many a story. We tried to picture read and came up with our own versions.
My version is simple. Upon death, the Pharaohs would be asked two questions and the answers would determine if they could continue their journey in the afterlife. The first question was "Did you bring joy?" And the second was "Did you find joy?"
We have our own Joy. He's the ever smiling, benign spectator who likes masala chai. Although lyrics elude his memory, he enjoys humming and adds a melodious note to our symphony.
We all ate ice creams but that didn't abate the blistering desert heat.
The temple of Queen Hatshepsut is in ruins thanks to her crazy stepson who desecrated the temple beyond repair. As we trooped up the three flights of stairs, the scorching sun beat down upon us.
Sunita took refuge in the shadow of a column. Renu and Rashmi found their sanctuary too. By the last leg, everyone was feeling the heat but Gouri had it worse. It was time to hydrate and chill. We splashed water on each other and played Holi!
The trek was arduous so many folks chose to stay back and shop in the souvenir stores. The shopaholics - Rashmi, Manoj, Gouri, Uma, Mangala, Nirmala, Sunita and Alka were escorted to the Luxor souk. One man and seven women!
The rest chose to stay back at the resort and chitchat or swim. Incidentally, our resort was situated on an island in the Nile and was simply fantastic.
As we savoured dinner under the stars by the riverside, a song kept resonating within...
Bade achhe lagte hain
ye dharti, ye nadiya,
ye raina....
Aur....?
Aur tum.

Day 6
Tomorrow we depart from our ship
Our cruise will be over soon
So let's spend this morning
Sailing in a hot air balloon.
It was miraculous to soar over the Tombs of the Nobles, the Temple of Hatshepsut and other sprawling relics at the call of the rising sun. The entire dawn sky was dotted with colourful balloons and the scene was right out of a Disney fairy tale!
I stood inside the basket mesmerized, watching the verdant fields on the one side and the stark desert on the other.
The experience was so heart warming, sure enough I got a big bear hug from Gouri again. I confess, we now want to do things that merit more of them.
We gave some time out for people to catch up on their sleep. But the cards scarab has bitten Satyabhama, Pawan, Sam and Manoj. They sit on the sundeck and deal out hand after hand while the stunning Nile, palm trees and falcons watch their game.
Manoj has a 'kom ombo' heart. He's always helping us with the luggage. He's always assisting folks as they traverse the narrow gangplank. But ask him for a piece of his pizza, and he transforms into a stingy, mean miser. So Manoj is Joey and Sam is Archie!
Many of us ordered customised silver kartoush wherein the locket is engraved with the name of a loved one in hieroglyphs.
We watched the golden beans of Amun Ra dance on the Nile from aboard a felucca. We nibbled on dal ki khasta kachoris and sang songs to the beat of an Arabic drum.
Opposite the winter palace, on the kerb by the river front we had masala chai. The shutterbugs Manoj and Pawan got some priceless pictures of birds flying in perfect formation in a sky splashed with sunset colours.
Luxor temple by night and the beautifully illuminated Avenue of the Sphinxs are exhibits beyond compare. In no other temple can one so clearly see a combination of Pharoic, Islamic, Coptic, Greek and Roman influences.
Travelicious topped up the ship's international cuisine with piping hot badam ka halwa, gulab jamun, a variety of subzis, dal, bhujia, papad and puris on board. Happy tummies make happy hearts!
May we be the sunshine and lift everyone up like the hot air balloon.
Mia Mia 😊
Some videos from day 5
*Travelicious memoirs*
Day 5:
The morning saw us gaping at the magnificent columns and paintings of the Esna temple. Gouri was thrilled to see workers excavating at the site. Most sites from ancient tumultuous Egypt have not yet been unearthed.
When the sun was setting, we were sipping masala chai and chomping on ajwain sohalis in the outer courtyard of the Karnak temple!
The entire city of Luxor is a fascinating open air museum!
What's also fascinating is that Pawan has an ice cream every evening and then skips dinner! He's grandfather to a brood back home but still a boy at heart!
What's fascinating is that Renu wears elegant western outfits but sports a big bindi too! It's makes her look so distinguished and lovely.
What's fascinating is that Rashmi barged into the ship's kitchen and cooked scrumptious pohe for all! She has the head chef, sou chef and all stewards eating out of her hand. She requested them for vegetarian pizza and burgers and lo and behold, the staff scurried to carry out her wishes. The woman is a linguist and though she knows not a word in Arabic, she communicates with the manager smoothly!
What's fascinating is that everyone dressed up for the belly dance and tanoura dance show! But the best dressed were Rashmi and Kalyan. Rashmi wore the traditional galabya with a shimmering headgear and Kalyan was by far the most flamboyant!
Renu, Gouri, Uma, Sunita and Sam gave the belly dancer a run for her money. They shook their bellies and all other parts and danced the dance of love, joy and dreams.
Tanoura is an Arabic word, which translates to skirt in English. It is a traditional folk dance of Egypt, where the dancer spins to the tunes of Arabic songs.
When in Egypt, we do as the Egyptians do...

*Red hot and ready!* A lady in red steals hearts wherever she goes. 💃 That is the reason we chose red as the dress code for the Vietnam kick-off party! ❤️ Not because the flag of Vietnam is red! 🇻🇳 Their red is a symbol of bloodshed, struggle and revolution inspired by communism. 🥷🪖 Our red was bold and beautiful - a red hot vibe in an ordinary black and white world. ⚫⚪ Nineteen fabulous shades of red! 🪭 Wearing red sometimes causes extreme selfie-taking. 🤳 But not for us! 📸 Our ladies were busy gauging their new travel buddies(...acchhaa...ye bhi chal rahi hain...) 🤨 and following Alka’s travel presentation (...kahin kuch chhut tho nahi gaya...kapde kam tho nahi padenge) 🧐 Then they bonded with their team mates. And played funcharades. 🤏🫳🤟🤙 It was a clash amongst equals and finally we gave up and moved to the dining table. 🍽️ The table decor was in red and yellow 🟡. Vietnam’s flag also has a 5 point yellow star ⭐ in the middle. The five points represent five main classes in Vietnamese society—intellectuals, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, and soldiers. Ours is but one class! We are all hodophiles - krazzzy women who love to travel. 🧳👜🌂🕶️ More conversation flowed as we sampled Rawat kachoris, banana kebabs, matar puris, dum aaloo, Vietnamese rice wraps, Vietnamese noodles, Chinese Manchurian and marble praline cake! 🍱 Sharing food with new friends, one bite at a time, savouring every moment, the taste buds dancing, the heart fluttering at the thought of exploring a whole new world... *SOLO* ...! ❤🔥 We put the red in ‘fired up’!🏮 #travel #nature #travelphotography #photography #love #photooftheday #instagood #travelgram #picoftheday #instagram #beautiful #photo #wanderlust #naturephotography #adventure #art #travelblogger #instatravel #landscape #like #summer #explore #trip #vacation #follow #traveling #ig #bhfyp #happy #fashion
Conquering new heights, one step at a time! 🌉✨🌲 From walking on the world's longest glass bridge to soaring through the sky on a zip line, our adventurous journey continues! #FearlessExplorers #SkyHighThrills #natureadventures #summerfun #traveliciouskolkata #friends #summer *Day 3* *'Bhai, itna sorry tho kabhi meine apni mummy ko bhi nahi bola hai!' - Vihaan* A world in which only children exist and magic works, offers greater opportunities to digress and explore. It was a day of digressions. The itinerary included traversing the longest glass bridge in the world, plucking tea leaves on a scenic tea plantation, spelunking in a bat cave, forest bathing amidst pine trees and dancing with the locals at an ethnic cultural show. We did it all but also added unscheduled thrill rides on a long...long zipline and biking on tandem cycles. Today we leave the serenity of the rural countryside and go back to the hustle and bustle of a metro city where pizza and tacos will be freely available. But living in a rural setting has exposed the children to so many marvellous things - the natural world, the texture of small town life, and the exhilarating experience of local space. We've done duck catching, kite flying, river bathing, hiking, caving, mango felling, tea plucking, ethnic dancing, biking, lichi picking....but for their phones, the children might even have found peace! Stressed is desserts spelled backwards! After every meal, we've indulge the children with the choicest of exotic fruits and homemade sweets. Trekking and hiking is not popular with the children. As is meditation. But we cajole them to do it anyway. For it's not the mountain that we conquer, but ourselves. After teaching the locals the Galla gudiyaan hook step, the children jumped into the pool and splashed around late into the bed when the plan was to hit the bed...no matter...it was a day of digressions after all..
Thrilling escapades with our amazing squad of 24! 🌟🌿🌊 From bamboo rafting to duck catching, we did it all! #AdventureFever #FunWithFriends #ChildhoodUnplugged #traveliciouskolkata #travelfun #summerfun #summercamp #friends
