I think we can proudly say that the hair revolution in Mumbai was started by 2 womxn who opened a salon in #Khar called Nalini and Yasmin (1972).
Around 1984, every woman wanted Dimple Kapadia’s cut and colour. Decades before Bollywood hair trends came to the fore (around 2001), these womxn were raking in credit for the super chic hairstyles of the legendary actors of the 1980s, like Zeenat Aman and Hema Malini. These were followed by Madhuri Dixit’s wavy layers in Tezaab (1988) and the late Sridevi’s cool bob in Lamhe (1991), which she cut most fearfully.
𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐑 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘
Naegamvala and Eranee became friends while flying together for Air India, circa 1964 to 1966. They married husbands who were friends. A few years later, coincidentally, they bought flats in the same Air India building in Mumbai. They had done courses in hairdressing in London, also coincidentally. Their children were young and they both wanted to work from home. Eranee had an extra bedroom to spare. In 1976, the two of them set up that room and faxed a buzzer between the two flats. It didn’t buzz much. “Training as flight attendants taught us that customer satisfaction and quality consciousness were the virtues needed in the service industry,” explains Naegamvala. It was a while before they set up shop around 1978, funded by loans from friends (and personal items that they sold) and advertised by word of mouth. Their first sets of clients were ex-colleagues, friends and neighbours. Slowly, everyone from the film industry and the corporate world had a turn at Nalini & Yasmin. “Our greatest pride still remains the local girls from Ambedkar Colony who joined us as cleaners but graduated to giving blow-drys, learning English and grooming themselves,” says Eranee. Many of them are hairdressers and salon owners today.
