Even though the art of writing letters with ink on paper is dying a slow death, this art is being kept alive in a crowning glory place of an Indian state.

Floating gardens, islands, restaurants and houseboats are all things heard of, but a floating post office that too the only floating post office in the whole world, is built on an intricately carved maroon houseboat. The floating post office is located in the beautiful city of Srinagar in Kashmir, amidst picturesque snow-clad mountains on a huge houseboat in Dal Lake, which makes it a unique piece of architecture very few have heard of.

Delivering letters to people for over 200 years now, was built by the Britishers, renamed as Nehru Park Post office, again renamed in 2011 as 'Floating Post Office', by the then Chief Post master John Samuel. He took an initiative to repurpose it.

The people of Kashmir have included water as a way of inhabiting their lives. Rather than making living land specific, the shikara culture has made absolute use of water and also in the best possible way.

The Floating Post Office has two rooms- one that is used for the official work while the second room is the museum that traces the history of the postal department in the state. The Post Office is more than just an area of fascination and gawk. It is a substantial place for the people of Dal and the houseboat owners this place is where they get their essential administrative work done including banking.

Another fascinating thing about this Post Office is its unique stamp. Any usual authorisation has a date and an address written on it. However, the stamp of this Floating Post Office also has a boatman on a shikara along with the date and address.
The special feature of this post office is that letters posted from here carry a special design which has the picturesque scenery of Dal Lake and Srinagar city. These pictures reach wherever these letters are posted to and hence promote Kashmir as a tourist destination across the globe.

Postmen hire a shikhara and deliver the letters to houseboats. This has been going on for years and continues.

The greatest fear that the post office faces is the recurrence of floods in the lake.

The post office is a boon to the people as it is a major source of attraction as well as a source of income for the people.

Anyone involved in the shikara business comes here for assistance with their money and deposits their money in this Post Office Cum Bank. This place has become the safest area where people can trust the workers of this Post Office with their important mails as well as their savings.

Such culture needs to be preserved and appreciated. Hence, if you ever visit Kashmir, do visit the Dal Lake and have a look at this fascinating Post.
