The Prettiest Railway Station in India – Barog

Barog, a picturesque and tranquil hill station, lined with oak and pine trees, is located on Shimla-Kalka (UNESCO heritage ) railway line and probably the most photogenic railway station in India with its hanging planters of pink flowers and pretty as a button station building.

The spotlessly clean Barog station enthralls one with its Gothic influenced architecture, red tin roofs and the white and blue painted wooden station building.

The tunnel at Barog is the longest and straightest tunnel amidst nearly 102 tunnels on the route of the Shimla-Kalka Railway.

Maheshwar - Madhya Pradesh

The glorious city of Mahishmati, the ancient capital of King Kartivirajun, Maheshwar is a charming temple town dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is situated on the convergence of the River Narmada and Kaveri in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Maheshwar is a temple town, but the usual turmoil of crowds, noise and commercialization has not touched it yet. A walk along the riverside in Maheshwar or a boat ride on the Narmada River at sunrise or sunset is a hypnotising experience.

At Maheshwar the tradition of weaving saris in cotton and silk has been continuing for over 200 years. These saris are famous throughout India and abroad for their simple elegance and beauty.

The Qutub Minar Complex soaked in dazzling light !!

Qutub Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world, constitutes an important example of Indo-Islamic Architecture. The tower stands in the Qutub complex in South Delhi, India. UNESCO designated the Qutub Minar and its monuments a World Heritage Site. In addition to the most famous monument in the complex, Qutub Minar, other important buildings and structures stand in the complex, including the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, the Ala-I-Darwaza, the Alai Minar, and the Iron Pillar. Complex also has the ruins of Jain temples which were previously there.

Rock-cut temples at Masroor,
Kangra, Himachal Pradesh

32.0654 degree N, 76.1233 degree E

---------------------------------------------------

It is located in district Kangra of Himachal Pradesh. These temples were carved out of monolithic to rock with " Shikara" with a sacred pool. Rock-cut temples in India present a different perspective. Rock-cut architecture exists in the form of caves carved out of hills. Barbar caves in Bihar, Ajanta-Ellora and Elephanta caves in Maharashtra, and Badami caves in Karnataka are significant examples of rock-cut architecture in India.

UNESCO World Heritage Site Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram is another example of rock-cut monolithic temple complex (which is not caves).

In North India, rock-cut architecture is not commonly found. Masroor temples are the only example of monolithic rock-cut temples in the sub-Himalayan region.

Interestingly these temples have striking similarity with temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia which 4000 km. away.

The temple complex was first reported by Henry Shuttleworth in 1913.

This is my observation:
Interesting fact is Kangra Valley Railway (KVR) project was surveyed in 1912 and 1914. Can it be possible that during the survey they discovered these temples because nearest Kangra Valley Railway is Nagrota Surian which is 11 km and Henry Shuttleworth could be one of the surveyer official.

Masroor is well connected with road. Nearest airport is Kangra Airport at Gaggal, Kangra which is 30 kms. Nearest broad gauge railhead is Daulatpur Chowk in Himachal Pradesh and Pathankot in Punjab -both are equidistant from Masroor.

Masroor Temple complex is under Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Monument Entrance:
For Indians/SAARC/BIMSTEC : INR 20/- Per Adult
For Foreigners: INR 250/- Per Adult

As of now, they not accepting cash and issuing physical tickets. You need to pay online on below ASI website.

The limits on passenger numbers imposed by Heathrow airport to cope with a staff crunch has been in force from July 12 to September 11.

Snake boats have seven centuries of history, starting with an order of Chembakassery principality’s 14th-century king Devanarayanan to design wooden vessels with one prow rising in the shape of a reptile’s hood. The ruler won the battle in the sprawling backwaters, earning more reputation for the 138-foot-long boats as multipurpose carriers too. The looks of the boat made from wild jackfruit trees remain unchanged in the present times.

18/06/2022

Every year, as the monsoon season sets in, major national parks in India shuts down for four to five months. The reasons vary from region to region. For instance, towards the north eastern side of the country, the rainfall is maximum and every year the parks get flooded. In other parts of the country, even though it may not be a flood situation, during monsoon season, the forest gets heavy undergrowth and it becomes difficult for any vehicular movement.

In tiger territories, though it is believed that this is the time when breeding happens, that might not be the case. They breed the whole year round. It’s just that the wildlife also needs some breathing time, free from visitors in their territory.

Here are some of the parks either already off-limits now, or will be closed very soon for the season.

Beating the heat!

With North India sizzling at 40+ temperatures, this is the only way to stay cool……..
During the scorching summer months, you are likely to find them in water upto their neck. Even in the months of winter you can see them resting in the water to cool down after a heavy meal.

Did you know that tigers have webbed toes?

Unlike most cats, tigers love swimming and playing in the water. In fact, such is their love for water that they seem to have adopted a semi-aquatic lifestyle by living around the water bodies. They have been observed to enjoy staying in water for long duration, and are excellent swimmers. Their webbed toes, makes it easy for them to push a greater volume of water while swimming, enabling them to swim across rivers at a stretch for several kilometres.

Update from Jaipur, Rajasthan : The state government has decided that from 5th June 2022 Jantar Mantar shall remain open for visitors till 7 in the evening. Till now, it used to get closed at 5 pm.

About Jantar Mantar : Located in the heart of the Pink City, this UNESCO world heritage site is an astronomical observation site build by Maharaja Jai Singh during the period 1727-1734 in north India.

They are monumental examples in masonry of known instruments but which in many cases have specific characteristics of their own. Designed for the observation of astronomical positions with the naked eye, they embody several architectural and instrumental innovations. This is the most significant, most comprehensive, and the best preserved of India's historic observatories. It is an expression of the astronomical skills and cosmological concepts of the court of a scholarly prince at the end of the Mughal period.

If you are visiting Mussoorie, do pay a visit to Surkunda Devi temple which is located at a hilltop (around 40 km, 2 hrs drive from there). Besides the religious significance for the believers, it is also a scenic spot for those who love nature.

With the new Ropeway project, visit to the temple has become quite easy and swift. Reasonably priced, it is drawing a lot of tourist traffic. Reach early before 10 to avoid long queues.

Happy World Bee Day! 🐝🐝🐝

is observed on May 20th every year to draw attention to the essential role bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy.

It honours not just honeybees, but bumblebees (of which there are 21 species) and the 77 species of solitary bees, too.

While bees are most commonly known for honey, these intelligent creatures are also behind most of the food we love – fruit, veg, chocolate and even coffee.

And Albert Einstein once famously said that “if the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live”. But why are bees so important?

Essentially, bees are crucial for the pollination of plants – pollinating a third of the food we eat and 80 per cent of flowering plants – many fruit, veg and crops that feed livestock depend on bees to pollinate them.

While there are other methods of pollination – including wind, birds, bats and other insects – wild bees are among the most important, because they are capable of pollinating on a much bigger scale.
