A cell inside the in . Each cell is 4.5*2.7 meters,like a cell,thus the name 'Cellular Jail'. It was constructed in 1896 by the to house,torment and torture freedom fighters (mostly). The bricks used in the construction were brought from Burma. .

Cellular jail - Andaman! One of the pages from the dark history of pre-independent India. Built by the Britishers, they used this prison to torture and punish influential Indian freedom fighters. Popularly known as Kaala Paani, this prison was designed to physically​ and mentally​ torture our freedom fighters and it has witnessed some very sad and horrific atrocities. Kaal means time and paani means water, the chance of a prisoner coming back from there was doubtful. Thousands of freedom fighters were sent here for punishment. The prison makes us, people from independent India, realise can the struggles that our ancestors went through for giving us our independence! Visiting this place got mixed emotions, sad and yet proud!

These are the ruins of the British settlement at Ross Island of Andaman Islands. This particular building is the Governance building. Ross was the first british settlement in Andaman Islands. They then captured and used the Islands as a prison to hold Freedom fighters. The atrocities they went through to fight for our nation's freedom were sympathised all over the world.
