Back in Kenya, I had the chance of photographing these stately grey crowned cranes.

Kenya, alongside Uganda, Zambia, and South Africa, is a hospice for this endangered aviator, harbouring the largest remaining populations in the wild.

Yet, what was truly remarkable was to learn that once the grey crowned crane meets its mate, it’s monogamous for life, and that’s special.

As the langur alarm calls inch closer from treetop to treetop, our naturalist kickstarts the engine of the 4x4 with promptitude, leaving a serried line-up of gypsies behind.

Word travels fast, or call it shooting in the dark, but by now, 4-5 more gypsies have joined the line-up. She leaves them behind, and the guide nods in approval as we park surreptitiously next to what locals call a pugdundee, a thin trail used by animals to cross paths.

What happens next is not budgeted for.

Under the watchful eye of their mother, these errant cheetah cubs, brimming with energy, have little to worry about at this point.

We observed them playing around with consummate agility, a trait naturally inherent in cheetah cubs.

To an untrained eye, their antics are endearing. Yet, there’s more than meets the eye here, even for the cubs themselves.

The focus, stealth, speed, and other skills they are honing now will come in handy as they transition into adulthood.

The evening air is thick with anticipation.

A convoy of cars on the morning safari spent eons tracing fresh tiger pug marks around the edge of Darra Talab (pond), all in vain.

Judging by the size of the pugmarks cheerfully imprinted in the wet mud, we can discern it’s a male.

The morning breeze was redolent with the anticipation of seeing a tiger anytime now. But as time hurtled forward with precision, hope dwindled and so did the enthusiasm.

We found ourselves in an odd rapture.

The forest was quiet, and a chance encounter seemed surreal. Yet exiting early, as rational as it was, was out of the question.

As we drove around desultorily, a thickset body, taut as a rope, enraptured us. The tiger was as bewildered as we were, and gave us a snarl to remember 🐅

As stupefying as it may seem, these relatives of the leopard are capable climbers, especially when young and curious 🌳

Yet, spotting a tiger on a tree is rare.

Spotting two together? Now, that’s as rare as seeing Halley’s Comet ☄️

Here’s to scaling astronomical heights like these tigers this 2024 season 🐅

“Perhaps you may not have seen me, but please don't be disappointed, I have seen you”

Does this ring a bell? 🔔

If you’ve been to the Tala zone of Bandhavgarh National Park, chances are you’ve glimpsed this written on a placard next to a tiger portrait, displayed slyly at the park exit.

Think about it 🤔

With a vision that is 6x better than a human, this rude awakening doesn’t come as a shock, does it? 🤷

Featuring one of those lucky moments when both human & tiger spotted each other, quite serendipitously.

An image from my Wilderness Uncut photo-safari in Naboisho, Kenya of two different bird species, little bee-eater in the foreground and grey woodpecker behind. Both species feed entirely on insects, the bee-eater snapping them out of the air, the woodpecker chiseling them out of the dead wood, and both species benefit from the dead trees that are part of any healthy woodland environment. With high-quality guiding by Kaleku and Kicheche Camps . Shutter speed 1/1250sec at f7.1, iso 640. Canon R3 and RF 100-500 L IS.

A dominant male lion, keeping a strong eye on a lioness, out of the frame. He is one of a coalition of two males in this part of the Greater Mara Motorogi conservancy from my Uncut photo-safari with Camps . This male and his parter are currently doing a good job of keeping their cubs safe from competitors. Thanks to high-quality guiding by Nampaso. Shutter speed 1/640 at f7.1, iso 3200. Canon R3 and RF 100-500L

A young female cheetah nearest camera, with her brother, slightly taller beside her, keeping a low profile and eyes locked ahead as they stalk a herd of impala. With Uncut , Kicheche Camps and great guiding by Mika Kaleku Another cheetah can be seen in the background. The three young cheetah (around 22 months old) are independent (from their mother) and hunting successfully for themselves. At this age the female is staying with her two brothers though it is likely that she will leave them at some point to live alone as most female cheetah do. From my current Kenya photo-safari in Naboisho conservancy. Canon R6 and RF 70-200 f2.8 IS. Shutter speed 1/500sec at f4.0, iso 1600

The Glory days of 2019 - This is a year that will remain etched in my memory for a long long time. A 100 days spent following the beloved Tigers of Bandhavgarh. From watching tiny babies, mother cub interaction to crazy cubs playing in the water for hours together, I saw everything. Calling it a sensory overload is an understatement.

These are 2 of Dotty's male cubs. Thiss litter of 3 were the showstoppers of the season. Boy did they delight everyone. My guests and I spent a lot of alone time watching these cubs and their antics. More so as we mostly had all day permits, which allowed us the flexibility to stay back in the park all day.

With Dotty giving birth to another litter of 4 cubs, this summer looks promising as well as the build up for 2022 looks promising.

Thanks to Grant Atkinson for processing the pics 🙏.

The Mahaman Male

At roughly 11yrs of age, this gorgeous boy has been the dominant male of Magadhi for almost 6 yrs now. His territory easily extends to over 80 sq kms.

As with all male Tigers, he is now facing pressure from newer male Tigers, especially his 3 sons from his last litter with Dotty, the queen mother of Zone 2. With her siring 4 new cubs, it's even more important that he holds ground, for the safety of the cubs. A dominant male is essential for Tiger society to thrive. They provide essential security for females and cubs.

With a new generation of male Tigers trying to establish territory, what plays out in the next couple of months will be interesting to watch.

Join us as we follow the intriguing lives of these Tiger families who we have followed for the past decade.
