Gramin Shiksha Kendra For Relevance in Education The community has been closely observing the process and is now actively involved with the management of these schools.
(9)

Gramin Shiksha Kendra was formed in 1995-96 after a series of initiatives undertaken in the area on forest management and conservation, livelihoods, people centric development and education by a group of development professionals working closely with the people. The experiences led the group to initiate GSK as an organization that would work on a long term plan in the area beginning with education

and making the community more actively involved with the development processes in the area. Education and an improvement in the schools system was considered to be the most crucial input and GSK developed a strategy by which these could become the starting point for a change process in the area. GSK believed that setting up good examples of what quality education should be was a starting point for helping communities understand what to aim for. The four schools set up since 2005 have demonstrated a system of education which is child centric, helps the children learn at their own pace, is relevant, has been able to equip them to be able to develop as confident young people. While the approach to teaching and learning has been different, the children have been able to perform well in the examination conducted by the state education board as well. The four schools called Uday Pathshalas are based in Bodal and Faria in Khandar block and Jaganpura/Khava in Sawai Madhopur block of the district. Uday Urban is based in Sawai Madhopur town. Each of these schools is evolving as a ‘resource school’ in the local area wherein children and teachers of government schools have access to libraries, assistance in understanding educational concepts and will also soon have science laboratories. Our plan is to have one such resource school for around 25-30 government schools. This has led GSK to extend its work to government schools in the area through an initiative called Vistaar which has been working to introduce improved class room processes, better management and active utilization of improved teaching and learning methodologies within the government schools. We have been working in close coordination with the district education department, the DIET and the school teachers. GSK is part of a steering group for this project which is chaired by the Collector of the district. The project is currently operational in 14 schools.

GSK recently concluded a 4-day Sports and Leadership Camp exclusively for the girls of the UMANG program, with a total of 89 enthusiastic participants. The sports camp stands as a cornerstone of the Umang initiative, empowering these young minds in schools to strengthen their life skills. Beyond the playing field, it plays a crucial part in fostering confidence and breaking down societal taboos associated with gender and caste.

We feel proud to share that the Indian Girls’ Handball Team won the bronze medal in the 6th Asian Women’s Handball League concluded in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Aranta and Jyoti, two of our alumni from the Uday Samudayik Pathshalas were part of the Indian team and are the first two girls from the area to participate in an international tournament and achieve this feat.

We believe that this will not only encourage the girls, but all the children especially those from the disadvantaged communities to never stop dreaming and making efforts to chase those dreams.

Sawai Madhopur is one of the 250 most backward districts of the country and home to Ranthambhor National Park. Sawai Madhopur is also home to Jyoti and Aranta Meena who are currently in Almaty, Kazakhstan to play in the 6th Asian Women’s Club League Championship. Jyoti and Aranta are the first people, from the area, not girls, to travel abroad for any purpose.
And that is what makes this story special – two girls from a back community from one of the most backwards districts of the country travelling internationally to play handball.
Two girls whose parents are farmers and not well educated but who support their daughters to study in sports academies outside their village, their district and ‘let them’ live their dreams.
Both Jyoti and Aranta emerge from a unique experiment in education from a small organization called Gramin Shiksha Kendra (GSK) (https://www.graminshiksha.org.in ). GSK runs schools called Uday Samudayik Pathshalas.
GSK decided that sport should be part of the school curriculum. That in addition to language, mathematics, science, social studies, sports, carpentry, pottery, art are also subjects that are accorded equal importance in the curriculum. They are not extra-curricular activities, but co-scholastic subjects. GSK decided to give special emphasis to sport as they felt that playing sport teaches children things that makes them better at academics too. When children play they learn how to manage themselves, work for a common purpose with focus, learn to acquire a skill, work as a team, handle conflict to name some – all these without the lens of ‘moral education’ and in their natural language of play. GSK chose sports like handball, kho kho, kabaddi, football that are not resource intensive and are played in teams.

✨Sharing another special day celebrated at GSK - Our first cohort from Ranthambore Shiksharthi Fellowship program graduates today. ✨

Gramin Shiksha Kendra initiated the RSFP in August 2021 to provide academic support to the children enrolled in government-run schools by meaningfully engaging the youth from the local communities. The fellowship programme also aims to help the youth acquiring necessary skills to cope-up with the future challenges.

It was a moment of joy and enthusiasm at Bodal where the fellows spoke about their experiences, engaged in bonding activities, and sang their favourite songs with their trainers.

Today is a special day - Our second cohort from Umang program graduates today!

Through the program, we take a proactive approach to reach out to the young adolescent girls from disadvantaged and vulnerable communities who are at a risk of dropping out from schools. We worked with them intensively for two years on Life-skills, Academics, Health and Hygiene, and Computer and Media Literacy.

It was a joyful moment at Shyampura village today where the girls come from. The girls sang their favourite songs with their teachers, parents, and the younger cohort. The younger cohort also presented their seniors with the gift-cards designed by them.

GSK wishes everyone a very Happy Women's Day!

Every year, we celebrate this day to celebrate the achievements of women and remember their contribution in our lives. We celebrated today with the girls and women from our communities where they drew their inspirational female figures, and had discussions about them.
The girls also vividly spoke about their women role-models. For some, their mothers are their role-models as they shoulder the dual responsibilities of working on the farmlands as well as taking care of their families.

Through Umang program, we are working with the adolescent girls to help them improve their life-skills such as Effective Communication.

Here is a small video clip of a session conducted with our girls where using the Chinese Whisper activity, our teachers are helping them understand verbal and non-verbal communication.

The development of the community and the youth is at the core of our work.

Our motivated fellows from the Ranthambhor Shiksharthi Fellowship Program work closely with parents and government school teachers so these two are not only aware of the progress in the learning of children but also actively participate in the process to ensure that there is a learning-supportive environment at home and school.

It also gives these young leaders a platform and the confidence to engage in dialogues over Education and Development with their community and school teachers.

Our girls participating in the Umang programme exhibited their learnings from the STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics) subjects. In the exhibition, they illustrated and exhibited their learning in mathematics, science, English and life-skills where around 150 members of their own village Shyampura participated.
This exhibition, which was curated in a month's time, was aimed to inculcate scientific temperament among the girls and to also equip them with the confidence to share their learnings with their elders from the community.

Here is to a positive beginning of the year 2022..

We have just concluded a five-days residential workshop with our 24 fellows (17 girls and 7 boys) from the Ranthambhor Shiksharthi Fellowship Programme (RSFP).

In the workshop, they learned about the methods of conducting research with their village communities, understood the concept of Gender and issues related to it more deeply, acquired digital and financial-planning skills.

Gramin Shiksha Kendra initiated the RSFP in August 2021 to provide academic support to the children enrolled in government-run schools by meaningfully engaging the youth from the local communities. Our team has participated in a five-days' workshop on learning the Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) with the help of Kolkata Sanved to work with children, adolescents and youth of Ranthambhor.

One important aim of using the DMT in our programmes is to work on the mental health and wellbeing of our young participants and to strengthen their life-skills.

Here are some of the pictures from the workshop.

✨Umang Programme - Our girls write new year resolutions for 2022✨

Through our intervention, we aim to equip the girls with essential life-skills so that they challenge the adverse forces and take agency regarding their decisions in life. During the sessions, an activity-based learning approach is used to work on communication, team work, assertiveness and self-awareness.

In the last week of December, as the new year approaches, our teachers and the girls discussed and wrote their resolutions for 2022. Among many resolutions, a few are - 'I will top in 10th class', 'I will spend more time with family, 'I will speak English as good as my teacher' etc.

This is small step towards the girls thinking about their future and taking actions to fulfill those dreams.

20/12/2021

Our teachers have been building capacity in the Dance Movement Therapy in partnership with Kolkata Sanved.

For their internship, which ended last week, each teacher had chosen a target group. The training will build capacity of our team to conduct sessions with children and the adolescents to ensure their emotional and psycho-social well-being.

Our Theatre group also participated in these sessions where they indulged in Movement Therapy Sessions and participated in an activity called 'Compliment circle', where they gave compliments to each other as a team.

Children from grades 6th, 7th, and 8th of Uday Community School, Fariya are nowadays engaged in various projects. One such project was to explore and understand various traditional costumes worn across India.

The first step was to gather information about their own local costumes by interviewing their parents, elders from the community, and teachers. In the next steps, they researched about various costumes of Rajasthan and pan-India using the resources available on the internet.

The teachers helped children in compiling all the information together which was then used by children to design paper-made costumes and to exhibit their end-products.

Gramin Shiksha Kendra is working towards promoting democratic values and spaces within the communities of Ranthambhor.

We have introduced Forum Theatre to facilitate the dialogues within the communities to discuss the critical issues related to Gender, Adolescents, and Education.

We recently organized a workshop with our team, with the help of Jana Sanskriti Centre for Theatre of the Oppressed to come up with a performance in Halonda village of Sawai Madhopur to discuss the pertinent issues related to gender, domestic abuse and alcoholism.

Community members across ages and genders watched the play and participated in the discussion (the Forum).

Our Story

Gramin Shiksha Kendra is a Non-Profit Organization situated in Sawai Madhopur district in the state of Rajasthan. The idea Gramin Shiksha Kendra was born in 1995 and was registered as a society under the Rajasthan Societies Registration Act, 1958. The idea of institutionalizing GSK emerged from the community to enable the coming generation of the area with the needed capacities to take on the challenges of life and livelihoods. And collectively we all thought of initiating a school education programme for ensuring quality education to the children living around the Ranthambhor National Park.

We started our school journey; the Uday Community School through the introduction of children and village community of the nearby villages under the acacia tree in the year 2004 in Jaganpura village. After which the school was established on the land donated by the community. Since then it has been working successfully with two more Uday Community Schools in Fariya and Girirajpura since 2009 and 2014 respectively. The schools were established on demand of the community of providing quality education for their children.

Our work area encompasses primary and middle school education, pottery and carpentry for internal autonomy and self-initiative, democratic and secular ideas in children through magazines (Morange) and other such creative medium. In the past years, Uday Community Schools has become a name to reckon with in the field of quality education for children of marginal communities around the Ranthambhor National Park. The schools have exhibited themselves as Centers for Quality Education accepted and appreciated by the communities and the government. This model encouraged the communities to envision and demand the similar quality education from the government schools.
