The relatively unexplored and untouched Chopta Valley in north east Sikkim is very popular among trekkers as well as people of several faiths. Chopta is famous for its monuments of historical and religious importance — from Chandrashila to the Tungnath Temple and more. It is also home to rare species of animals, plants and birds and welcomes birders as well as trekkers and other adventure sports enthusiasts.
The valley of flowers as it is known is a riot of colors during summer months. As you approach the valley, you can see the tall trees of Lachen area slowly going away and smaller shrubs becoming more common. Beyond Chopta valley greenery wanes even further and the pasture turns quite devoid of vegetation.

Lachen is a sclachenenic mountain village in North Sikkim district located at a height of 8500 ft above the sea level and is home to the Lachenpas, a unique Sikkimese Bhutia community. The name Lachen means "big pass". The village has magnificient surroundings with grassy mountain slopes on one side and imposing snow capped peaks, glaciers and rock cliffs on the other side. The village is located in a picturesque valley surrounded by conifer and Rhododendron forests
The journey to North Sikkim begins from Gangtok and subsequently one passes through Mangan, Chungthang and other villages. After sometime, the road forks into two – the right one heading towards Lachung, and the left one climbing up to Lachen at 8500 Ft.

Glenburn is a heavenly little plantation retreat that lies on a hillock above the banks of the River Rungeet, high in the Himalayas, overlooked by the mighty Kanchenjunga mountain range.

Started by a Scottish tea company in 1859, Glenburn then passed into the hands of one of India’s pioneering tea planting families – The Prakashes, One of India's pioneering tea-planting families, we have, over the years, come to be known as the “Chaiwala family“ - which literally means “tea planters“.

The story of the Chaiwala family began over a hundred years ago, and is closely entwined with that of tea plantations in India. Today, the third and fourth generation Prakash family carry almost a century of tea knowledge in their inheritance, and we invite you to experience this legacy at Glenburn.

The “tea estate” experience was inspired by the vineyards of Europe and other parts of the world, where visitors observe the wine-making process, taste the wine and shop for wine, local crafts and produce. We found the whole experience educational and very interesting, and were inspired to open our own tea estate for tourists who may be interested in knowing about how a tea leaf makes it to their tea cup.

Thanks and regards

28/07/2018

The Nathula Pass on the Indo-China border in the state of Sikkim is a strategically important location for the Indian Army. Blocked by snow in the winters, it is one of the four Border Personnel Meeting points for the Indian and Chinese armies.

What you may not know, is that the pass is guarded by the ghost of one Baba Harbhajan Singh. Late Sepoy Harbhajan Singh (23 Punjab) was born in a village in Kapurthala District and enrolled into the Punjab Regiment. Serving with his unit in Sikkim in 1968, he passed away on October 4 that year while escorting a mule column from Tuku La to Dongchui La.
He slipped and fell in a nullah and the water current carried his body two kilometers downstream. His body is said to have been found three days later and cremated with full military honours. He is said to have appeared in the dreams of his fellow soldiers and asked them to build a ‘samadhi’ for him. His unit did so 9 km from where the present shrine stands.

It is also widely believed that water kept at the Baba Harbhajan shrine became capable of curing ailing persons. Devotees therefore leave bottles of water in the name of ailing people and then give this blessed water to the sick.

Units of the Indian Army that are posted in the region, seek Baba’s blessing with various plates dedicated to him lining the shrine’s walls. They also believe that Baba will warn them of an impending attack days in advance. The Army even promoted him to an Honorary Captain and a paycheck was sent to his family. He was also granted an annual leave on 14 September every year. His belongings were packed and accompanied by soldiers, were sent to Kapurthala by train and brought back the same way. This was done annually till he was retired a few years ago.

So revered is he, that even the Chinese on the other side of the border leave a seat is left vacant for Baba as a sign of respect at flag meetings. People and soldiers passing through make it a point to pay their respects at the shrine. Clearly faith is stronger than anything else here.

Get awe-struck with the breathtaking views and the fluttering of the countless prayer flags adorning the sacred zone. Spin the prayer wheels lining a small jetty as you proceed to make a wish at the ‘wish fulfilling Lake’. Ascend the ridge to behold the gigantic imprint of the foot.
The fascinating trait of the Sacred Khecheopalri Lake is, despite its location amid the dense woodlands, no leaves can be seen floating in the lake, as the birds earnestly pick them up from the water.
