The ziggurat (Akkadian "ziqquratu": fortress, specifically of Sumerian origin) is the most characteristic building in the ancient Mesopotamia.

It is a structure of historic proportions, being the second-most important religious building in ancient Sumer after the temple of Enlil at Nippur. This Neo-Sumerian ziggurat was built about 2100 B.C., during an era when Ur and other Mesopotamian cities were entering a period of great cultural prosperity, their people prospering through agriculture and international trade - both land routes across Arabia to Egypt.

Striding lions of Babylon, symbol of Ishtar

Ishtar, an ancient Mesopotamian goddess, associated with love, beauty, s*x, fertility, war, justice, and political power, giving her extraordinary ability to both create life and take it away.

She holds a special historical significance, as she is the earliest goddess in written evidence, Ishtar was originally worshiped in Sumer under the name "Inanna" (dated back to the Late Uruk period – from around 5th century BC), and later by the Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians under the name "Ishtar. Her symbols are a star, the moon, lions and doves.

Ishtar’s complex combination of passion, strength, beauty and destruction became the starting point for various love goddesses and femme fatale characters. These include Astarte, the Hellenistic goddess of war and s*xual passion, followed by the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, and later the Roman goddess of love, Venus.
