Puffins have already started to arrive in Iceland! Soon enough, thousands of pairs will be reunited on the islands just outside Reykjavík where they will breed and raise their young!

Who knows, maybe we'll start our puffin tours a few days early this year - stay tuned.. 😉

Our data from recent years show that we observed the highest proportion of humpback whale surface activity during the early summer and breaching was the most common behaviour; seen on 12% of all tours!

Dive into the depths with us and discover the enchanting world of humpback whale surface behaviours, from lunge feeding to tail slapping and spy hopping - these magnificent creatures never cease to amaze us!

Humpback whales have for long captivated humans due to their complexity, making them one of the most studied cetaceans in our world's oceans. Their intelligence, social behaviours and diverse surface activities have gained significant interest of researchers around the world. They exhibit a rich arr...

Our journey started with a cloudy sky, but as time went on, it started to clear and we could see stars! The northern lights appeared, first as a vertical line in the sky, then they got stronger and were dancing everywhere above us! 💫

Another great surprise on the afternoon tour today; in addition to harbour porpoises and minke whales, we also found ORCAS!

"But nothing prepared us for the amazing surprise we were about to have! Our captain spotted a group of Orcas further away! We continue sailing before we reached them! The group was of at least 5 orcas with males and females scattered in the area! They approached the boat with interest, showed their fluke and rolled right in front of the bow! An unforgettable sighting for our passengers!"

This afternoon, we were graced with the presence of approximately 50 humpback whales (yes, you read that right!) engaging in behaviours such as spy hopping, pec and tail slapping, and even a few breaches. There were whales everywhere - we have never seen anything like it! But as if that wasn't enough, we also had the privilege of encountering at least 7-8 fin whales (first of the year!) and about 8 white-beaked dolphins!

What an amazing evening in Reykjavík! ✨

Last night, before the Northern Lights Cruise even sailed out of the harbour, our passengers were already looking to the sky, admiring the auroras! As we cruised past the Imagine Peace Tower, the lights suddenly became brighter, displaying various hues as they danced above us, shifting from green to red!

We had already found a humpback whale as soon as we sailed from the harbour this morning! We witnessed it do impressive peduncle throws and tail slapping for 5-10 minutes straight before it breached!

What a fabulous tour - we can't wait to get back out there this afternoon! 🤞🤩

From our whale diary, 8 March at 09:00 & 13:00 - "Frodo was very active today, it did several rolls that left everybody impressed, and as we were starting our way back to port, it breached as if saying good bye!!" // "It did a peduncle throw, which created lots of splash and smiles on our passenger's faces."

Curious about what our majestic marine friends were up to over the weekend? Check out the highlights from our Whale Diary! elding.is/whale-diary 🐋✨

Friday: "We had ourselves a humpback whale! It looked quite active since it was doing loads of splashes! As we stopped the boat at 200 metres away, it did several tail slaps, as well as a peduncle throw!!"

Saturday: "That's when things got interesting: we didn't reach the islands yet that we saw multiple pods of white beaked dolphins, probably amount to a total of 30-40 individuals, resting and possibly hunting for fish from time to time."

Sunday: "We sailed to the middle of the bay in search of cetaceans, and not too far into the bay we spotted some splashes. We decided to investigate and there they were, a big pod of 15 to 20 white-beaked dolphins!!"

The first MINKE WHALE of the year - a true sign of spring! 🌱

"[...] within 10 minutes we spotted a minke whale! This was extremely exciting as it was the first one of the year!! This individual was clearly feeding and in typical minke fashion, would change direction frequently."

"About halfway into the tour, our cameras started to capture two arches on top of Esja so we told everyone to come outside and to point their cameras there. It didn't take much time for the Northern Lights to glow stronger! We could see the greens and on the cameras even showed up reds and purples!!"

"We were still coming close to it [a third humpback whale] and suddenly this one started to breach! We saw 3 breaches in a row and we watched with our mouths opened, waiting for more. This whale did not disappoint: between 15-20 breaches, in between some head slap, full breaches (back and rolling)... Wow, wow, wow..."

"About 10 minutes after we left berth, we saw a splash and 2 blows belonging to 2 humpback whales!! The first one was doing peduncle throws, probably interacting with the other humpback, and then... it breached 50 meters away from us!!! Not once, not twice but three consecutive times!!!"

Yet another volcanic eruption started just after 6:00 this morning! The fissure is currently about 3 km. long and is located in a similar area as the eruption site from back in December. It does not appear to be a threat to any major infrastructure or nearby towns.

An eruption started northeast of Sýlingarfell after 6am on Thursday. An earthquake swarm had started in the magma intrusion north of Grindavík around half an hour earlier.

"9 min after we left the harbour, we spotted the first blow in the distance, but before we get to this one, we saw another whale in the same direction, but closer to us. [...] This humpback, as we joked, was "bowriding", so close and sometimes popping up on the other side of the boat, still quite close."

Our Story & What We Do

The Elding Team

Elding is a family owned company (est. in early 2000) that originated from personal interest in wildlife, boats and people. Running whale watching tours was the perfect way to unite these interests while giving locals and tourists the chance to experience Iceland’s marine life. We truly put great care into the business, and whale watching has become a lifestyle for us!

Our team is brought together by family ties and friendship, and having three generations of family working together with many great employees over the years has made Elding what it is today. We put great effort into recruiting and training new employees as knowledge, experience and respect for nature and wildlife are the most important qualities we look for in employees, to offer the best possible experience for our passengers. As our tours are authentic wildlife tours, no two tours are the same.
