June 24th - today is a special day!
Florence started early this morning with a parade to celebrate St. John the Baptist (the patron saint of the city) and everything is now ready for the big events of the day: the final match of the Calcio Storico - the traditional historical soccer- in Santa Croce square, and the "fochi di San Giovanni" the fireworks display at 10.00 pm tonight.

Santa Croce square is ready for Match of the Siege 2023 (Partita dell’Assedio 2023)!

Today, February 17th at 3.00 pm, Florence will commemorate the first match of Calcio Storico, held on February 17th 1530: while the city was besieged by the army of Carlo V and Pope Clemente VII, people played a match of Calcio Storico, to make fun of the attackers.
"Calcio Storico Fiorentino" (Historical Florentine soccer) is a mix of rugby, soccer and street fighting and it is still played in Florence every 17th February and then in June, as tournament between the 4 districts of the city.
Before the game will start, a parade will walk around the city with flags and drums.

On February 14th many countries in the world celebrate Valentine's Day.
Originally the Romans had a fertility celebration in mid- February.
However, the origins of what we celebrate today is connected to the Christian commemoration of the saint and martyr Valentine. It's not sure who was the Valentine the day is named aftyer, probably it was a priest of Terni who is said to have helped a fighting couple reconcile giving them a rose, becoming the patron saint of love.
Nowadays couples celebrate this day with romantic gestures, gifts, flowers and, as we all know, chocolates.

January the 6th is National Holiday in Italy.
We celebrate Ephifany, the day when the three Wise Man, the Re Magi, got in Jerusalem to visit the new born Jesus, bringing him gifts.

Italian kids are used to celebrate this feast placing their stocking on the fireplace at night.
During the night the "Befana", a good witch who travels the world flying on a magical broom, comes to their house bringing them candies and sweet coal.
To celebrate the feast some Befanas jumped off a building in piazza Repubblica, Florence, and offered candies to the thrilled children.

Why do we call a type of font Italics? Anything to do with Italy?
The name comes from the fact that calligraphy-similar fonts were first designed in Renaissance Italy, to replace documents traditionally written in a handwriting style. Printers Aldo Manuzio and Ludovico Arrighi were the main type designers involved in this process at the time.

The beauty and the charm of Florence’s architectural elements have appeared many times in movies. While walking through the city center you may recognize in Santa Maria del Fiore the setting of the seduction scene of "The Portrait of a Lady", or some familiar places where Helena Bonham Carter and Julian Sands walked by in the movie "A room with a view", like Santa Croce, Piazza della Signoria and Arno river side.

The huge hall of 500 in Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, is the largest room for civil power in Italy.
Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci were commissioned to decorate the huge walls of the hall but they never completed the project. Can you imagine how special would it be admiring a fresco by Michelangelo and one by Leonardo, together, in the same hall?
The hall and the whole palace were then decorated by Giorgio Vasari and some other great artists, such as Bronzino. The final result absolutely worth a visit!

San Gimignano is a little gem in Tuscany: an uphill town, still protected by the original medieval wall, surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan countryside.
San gimignano is famous for many reasons. Some of them are:
The unique skyline thanks to the 13 medieval tower houses still in town, the traditional production of saffron and Vernaccia white wine and a gelato shop that won the award for the best gelato in the world (where you can also taste the vernaccia wine gelato flavor!)
