An eternal symbol of Florence
Built in Roman times, Florence's Ponte Vecchio is the city's oldest bridge and one of the most famous bridges in the world, also known for its goldsmith stores.

🛶Immortal and mysterious, the soul of Venice consists of 118 islands joined by more than 400 bridges, separated by canals that act as maritime roads, perpetually traversed by gondolas and boats in a constant coming and going. To say it is overflowing with art treasures is even irreverent: romantic charm and history are absolutely unique here.

The beating heart of Sicily

Palermo, the capital of Sicily, is the perfect place to start getting to know the island, which, with its melting pot of cultures, from Norman to Moorish, from ancient Greek to Spanish, is one of Italy's most striking and varied regions. The extraordinary natural beauty, architecture and delicious food will enchant any tourist. One visit to Sicily is not enough, but when you find yourself there be sure to start with Palermo.

The Norman cultural heritage in Sicily can be seen in the splendid mosaics of the Palatine Chapel and Monreale Cathedral. The Palatine Chapel, which is dedicated to St. Peter and located in the Royal Palace, was commissioned by Roger II in 1132 in the Byzantine architectural style and therefore features some of the most impressive mosaics found in Italy. A few minutes' drive from the center of Palermo makes it possible to visit the cathedral of Monreale. Begun in 1174 by William II, the basilica is a curious combination of Franco-Norman, Byzantine and Arab styles, and boasts the largest concentration of Byzantine mosaics in Italy, totaling 6,500 square meters.

⛲️ The Fountain of the Naiads, a scandalous masterpiece.

⛲️ It is a truly majestic fountain that sits in the beautiful setting of the Piazza della Repubblica, but was once partly obscured because it was considered an object of scandal. Have you ever noticed the beauty of the Fountain of the Naiads?

It is located in one of Rome's most elegant squares, which for several years has been connecting Roma Termini station with Via del Corso and the monuments it houses. It is therefore a fountain that was built in a rather recent era, although its appearance might lead one to believe otherwise.
It was in fact built only in the late 1800s, at a time of great change for Rome and for Italy itself. It is a time when the eternal city is transformed into the eternal capital, into a secular place. So it is probably why the king decided to make Rome a modern Capital, full of inalberated streets and large fountains like the Fountain of the Naiads. It is a majestic work, which was made by the great-grandfather of the former mayor of Rome Rutelli, and represents mythological creatures, but above all the immense power that man has over nature.

In fact, the fountain shows not only the beautiful naiads, but also the Glaucus, who tries to grab hold of the flowing water, as if metaphorically the power of man is trying to overpower that of nature.
On the whole, the structure holds figures that belong to very ancient times, just as the water flowing within it does as well. The one in the fountain is in fact from a very ancient aqueduct, in whose waters it seems that at one time even Nero bathed, because at the time it was believed to be miraculous. Magical waters, just as magical is also the atmosphere that is created in these places. They are truly enchanting. After all, there was still a conservative air in the city, probably because it was still conditioned by the Vatican's schemes. As a result, many people found the nudity of the statues immoral, and for quite some time the fountain was covered with wooden boards, which were inserted precisely to hide the naked parts. In this way, however, it attracted even more attention from passersby.
Fortunately, these boards did not last long but were soon removed and the fountain returned to its original charm.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, also known as the "Leaning Tower of Pisa," is located in the city of Pisa, exactly in Piazza del Duomo known as "Piazza dei Miracoli." This famous tower began to lean as soon as its construction began in 1173. The Leaning Tower of Pisa measures 55.86 meters in height with an estimated weight of 14,700 tons and an inclination of about 4° extending to 3.9 m of the vertical. In 1964, the Italian government asked for help to prevent the Leaning Tower of Pisa from collapsing.
In 1987, UNESCO declared the entire monumental complex of the Piazza dei Miracoli a World Heritage Site. In 1990, the Leaning Tower closed its doors to the public as a security measure, and after several renovations, it reopened again on June 16, 2001.

The Tower of Pisa is a true jewel of Romanesque art. It is also a monument that has gained importance over the centuries with its pronounced inclination creating admiration and concern for experts and tourists alike. The Tower of Pisa has been proposed as one of the 7 wonders of the modern world!
This tower is the bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in the Cathedral Square and has 55.86 meters in height, 8 floors and about 294 steps. Its 8 floors are surrounded by a loggia with arches that reproduce the motif of the Cathedral facade and has 7 bells on the top floor of the Tower, its names are: Assumption, the largest and heaviest, Crucifix, San Ranieri, Dal Pozzo, Pasquereccia, Terza and Vespruccio. At present, they continue to ring before the start of the Cathedral masses and at noon thanks to an electronic system.

For over a millennium, Florence has been a global icon of beauty. Even its lesser-known neighbourhoods are a delight.

The cradle of the Renaissance and the world capital of art in the 15th century, it boasts one of the oldest historic centres and some of the most famous museums in the world, as well as one of the most iconic and distinctive landscapes as far as the eye can see. Everything in Florence is spectacular: from the shops to the streets that lead to the hills overlooking the most touristy areas, from the most authentic and popular neighbourhoods, just outside the historic centre, to the monuments that exhibit its soul.

All the stones and streets of Assisi speak of St. Francis. One descends to the Portiuncula, ascends Subasio to the Hermitage of the Prisons or heads toward the Convent of San Damiano, everywhere there is a mystical air, as if the saint could appear again at any moment.

Transformed by St. Francis, from the fortress it was, into the sacred city of Christian peace. Assisi rises in steps, with mostly narrow, winding, steep streets. Assisi like so many Umbrian cities, but perhaps to a greater extent, gives the happiness that comes from the grace of everything on which the eyes rest, with nothing jarring intruding to interrupt contemplation and taste abandonment.

🎭The origins of the craziest holiday of the year.

🎭The word "carnival" derives from the Latin carnem levare or "to eliminate meat" since in ancient times it indicated the feast held on the last day of carnival (Shrove Tuesday) before the period of abstinence and fasting dictated by Lent during which no one was allowed to eat meat! Carnival does not have a fixed date: each year depends on when Easter falls.
In fact, Carnival time begins on the first Sunday of the nine preceding Easter. It peaks on Thursday and ends on the following Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday, which precedes Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.

🎭During these festivities it was permissible to let loose, to free oneself from obligations and commitments, to engage in joking and playing. Moreover, masquerading made the rich and the poor unrecognizable, and thus social differences disappeared. Once the festivities were over, strictness and order once again dictated society.
The proverb associated with carnival, derived from the ancient Latin saying "semel in anno licet insanire" - "once a year it is permissible to go mad"

🎭According to numerous sources, including Apuleius, the "disguise" must be traced back to a festival in honor of the Egyptian goddess Isis, during which numerous masked groups were present. This custom was also imported into the Roman Empire: at the end of the old year a man covered in goatskins was carried in procession and struck with wands.

🎭In Italy, each region celebrates Carnival in its own way, but colors and desire for fun unite the festivities throughout the Boot.

🎭In Venice, for example, one of the most famous "Carnivals" in the world is celebrated, where pageantry and beautiful costumes reign, legacies of a centuries-old tradition; in Viareggio, on the other hand, it is the floats that make everything magical, as well as in Acireale, Sicily; in Ivrea then there is the very famous Battle of the Oranges, while in Sciacca splendid works in papier-mâché are made.

⛲️🇬🇧The fountains of Rome
The Romans from ancient times were already passionate lovers of public water, and the countless fountains in the city's various neighborhoods bear witness to this fact. The geological conformation of the land on which Rome was built gave natural outlet to innumerable spontaneous springs, and for this reason in almost all the urban area of the Capital there are still today fountains of different sizes and artistic cultural value. Some are in fact true works of art that tell us of the painstaking work of artists and sculptors who gave birth to absolute masterpieces. The most beautiful fountains in Rome can be found in the most beloved and frequented places each year by the many tourists in the capital, and they embellish some of the most famous squares in the historic center and beyond.

⛲️🇬🇧The Fountain of the Barcaccia, Spanish Steps
The Fountain of the Barcaccia (pictured on the cover) dominates the beautiful Spanish Steps and is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. It was built between 1626 and 1629 at the behest of Pope Urban VIII Barberini. The architect Pietro Bernini who oversaw its design wanted to create something unique and exclusive. Built with travertine, the shape of its basin in fact resembles that of a boat and the water seems to overflow on its sides creating the effect of sinking.

⛲️🇬🇧Fountain of the Four Rivers, Piazza Navona
The Fountain of the Four Rivers, by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, fed by the Acqua Vergine, was inaugurated on June 12, 1651 by Innocent X Pamphilj (1644-1655). Imposing and majestic, it stands in the center of the square and stands out in all its beauty, thanks in part to the Egyptian obelisk that rises and dominates the four gigantic statues that Bernini's collaborators wanted to dedicate to four rivers representing the continents, namely the Nile, the Danube, the Rio de la Plata and the Ganges.

⛲️🇬🇧Fountain of the Lions, Piazza del Popolo
At the center of Piazza del Popolo stands the Fountain of the Lions, built between 1814 and 1828 to a design by Giuseppe Valadier, using marble and travertine. Fed by the Virgin Aqueduct, it dominates the square thanks to the presence of a large Sistine obelisk in the center and the four Egyptian-style white marble lions from whose mouths copious jets of water gush forth.

⛲️🇬🇧Triton Fountain, Barberini Square
In Piazza Barberini is the Triton Fountain, the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the early 1600s. This work is very different from the others made by the artist in that it does not rest on a sculptural base, but on a hollow structure in the center that gives greater momentum and elegance to the entire work. Beautiful and distinctive, it combines perfect technique with harmony and artistic taste. The bees depicted on the coat of arms of the Barberini family, the undisputed symbol of the lineage, refer to the triumph of Divine Providence, while the dolphins, present at the base of the fountain, symbolically recall the benefits bestowed by the papal family.

⛲️🇬🇧Trevi Fountain, Trevi Square
Perhaps the most famous fountain in Rome, known and appreciated all over the world, the Trevi Fountain is a must-see for anyone visiting the capital. In the heart of the historic center, in Piazza Trevi, this fountain is the largest and one of the most famous fountains in the city. It was built on the facade of Palazzo Poli, by Nicola Salvi, a well-known architect who won a competition announced by Pope Clement XII in 1732, in which many of the leading artists of the time participated. The fountain features a wide basin surrounded by sculptures and statues at the center of which dominates the figure of Ocean driving a shell-shaped chariot.

⛲️🇬🇧Fountain of the Goddess Rome, Capitol Square
The Fountain of the Goddess Rome is located in the background of the Capitol Square and was the seat from the 12th century of the city municipality. The work, designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), was built in the 16th century and was totally constructed of marble. The central fountain sits between the two statues of the Nile and the Tiber, and is an architectural part of the square in a more discreet and understated form than other more majestic and imposing ones in the city's historic center.

⛲️🇬🇧The fountain in Piazza della Rotonda
Built in the square of the same name, designed by architect Giacomo Della Porta by sculptor Leonardo Sormani in the late 16th century, it stands majestically right in front of the entrance to the Pantheon.

⛲️🇬🇧Fountain of the Naiads, Piazza della Repubblica
In Piazza della Repubblica, in the Castro Pretorio district, stands the Fountain of the Naiads, built using granite, travertine, bronze, and concrete conglomerate. It dates from 1885-1914, designed by Alessandro Guerrieri.

⛲️🇬🇧Fountains of Piazza Farnese
These are twin fountains located in the square of the same name. Originally they were simply two basins without running water, and it was at a later stage, in 1626, that the architect Girolamo Rainaldi was finally able to transform the two basins into fountains by creating as many as seven points from which water spurted out: the central jet, the two ends of the Roman basin, and four more jets in the larger basin.
