Why can't I drink tap water in Sicily?
Generally speaking (as there are always exceptions) tap water in Sicily is safe for showering, boiling pasta, wash teeth, but not for ingesting/drinking.
Why?
1) most homes have cisterns that are filled daily or once a week. This means water will sit stagnant in these receptacles for at least some time. While water is treated prior to entering the cistern, the cisterns can't be cleaned that often and the chance of bacteria entering the water is likely. If used for showering or boiling, it's not a problem. But when you drink/ingest large amounts, you increase your chances of getting some intestinal issues - and who needs that on vacation?
2) even if the cistern is spot clean - the pipes/infrastructures in Sicily are a bit dated - rusty pipes found in older homes can cause issues as well - again, it's not worth the hassle!
This is why restaurants don't serve free ice water. All ordered water comes in bottles and you can choose "frizzante" (bubbly) or "naturale" (non-bubbly).
What about coffee bars? When you order a coffee at a Bar, they will serve you a glass of water for free (by request). This is either bottled water or filtered water - safe to consume.
Budget tip: go to a grocery store! You will pay an average of 18-35 cents per 2L bottle and if you have a fridge, keep it cold and fill your water canister before you leave the room!

Most grocery stores and bars (not restaurants) will sell small bottles of chilled water for 1 euro. Some even have chilled large bottles for around 1.50-2 euros.
At a restaurant, plan to pay 2.50-3 euros for a 750ml water bottle plus the cover charge (coperto) if ordered with your meal.

Etna is erupting again! She is the tallest active volcano in Europe! And we like her active!
Currently the only issues the eruption is causing is ash - cleaning up ash from every surface and if there is too much ash in the air - it will impact the Catania airport flights. Why I often suggest flying into Palermo 😉
Why do we like her active? Because the frequent she releases pressure the less likely that she will have a huge eruption that will cause damage! From Etna down to the villages and eventually city is a fair bit if altitude... So these little eruptions are safe and preventative!
And awe-inspiring of course! 🧡
🇮🇹 In Sicilia, dobbiamo accontentarci di andare al mare a San Vito Lo Capo, Cefalù, Mondello, Isola delle Femmine, Favignana, Levanzo, Golfo di Macari, Scala dei Turchi, Noto, Riserva di Vendicari, Marinello, Marzamemi, Capo Passero, Isola Bella, Capo d'orlando, Lipari, Milazzo, Lampedusa, Pantelleria, Cefalù, Fontane Bianche, Arenella, Punta Secca, Scoglitti, Avola, Pozzallo ecc.....
E se volessimo non andare al mare potremmo fare una passeggiata culturale a Palermo, Bagheria, Caccamo, Custonaci, Castellammare del Golfo, Mazara del Vallo, Catania, Taormina, Tindari, Messina, Valle dei Templi, Noto, Ragusa, Siracusa, Acitrezza, Aci Castello, Selinunte, Segesta, Marsala, Trapani, Erice, Caltanissetta, Enna, Piazza Armerina, Aidone, Caltagirone, Palazzolo Acreide, Gangi, Sperlinga, Castelbuono, Agrigento, Modica, Scicli ecc.... E se volessimo fare delle escursioni potremmo andare alle isole Eolie, isole Egadi, Pantelleria, Ustica, Lampedusa, Riserva naturale delle Saline di Trapani, Saline della Laguna di Marsala, Mozia, Riserva dello Zingaro, Riserva del Plemmirio, Parco delle Madonie, Lago Pozzillo, Parco dei Nebrodi, Cascate del Catafurco, Laghetti di Marinello, laghetti di Cavagrande, Gole dell'Alcantara, Etna ecc....
In poche parole, in Sicilia dobbiamo accontentarci di abitare nell'isola più bella del mondo ❤

A very typical Sicilian summer breakfast (especially Catania area) is a granita (lemon or almond or pistacchio creamy slushy) with a sweet bun.
It sounds odd but it is amazing and worth a try!

Your easiest way to get to Palermo city from the airport (and the cheapest) is by train! Just in the basement, below the airport it's the fastest and most effective way! Happy travels!
This beauty is called "Caldofreddo" and it's San Vito lo Capo's famous ice cream treat!
Traditionally it has coffee ice cream, sponge cake soaked in rum, whipped cream and chocolate sauce and OMG! It's amazing!!!!
Of course you can ask for whatever ice cream flavor you choose!
Next time you are in San Vito, make sure you try one!!! We had ours for lunch 😉😂

This amazing cooking class somehow got missed on IG! And what a class it was... Rainy and dreary day led to firing up the wood stove which we of course used for fresh bread and roasted eggplant! Seafood cous cous, caponata, home made Busiate Pasta with fresh Trapanese pesto ... Sfince, cassatelle... Things were so delicious and we had so much fun we forgot to take pictures!
But don't worry! Our guest Michele will document it all in one of her amazing Italian travel/recipe books! Follow her page! And we can't wait to see her next book!!! 🧡

Another amazing cooking class! We made Busiate, caponata, pesto, sfince, cassatelle, cauliflower fritters, caponata and more! Nonno offered a tour of his farm - fava beans are almost done, figs are coming along, lemons are hanging on and cactus is in bloom!!! Can't wait for prickly pears!!!

📌 Palermo I love how this city blends the old with the new! Its rise in popularity has brought many changes: a very hipster feel, ancient and modern fusions, crowds but also improvement in it's infrastructure. The new port downtown Palermo is spectacular! The Marina Fountain dances to music at set times (we happened to catch Bocelli 🧡). It's a great place to spend the evening and admire the fountain lit up, enjoy Amazing food: from Michelin star restaurant to street food, incredible gelato, sushi and some amazing artisan beer 🍺 Make sure to add the new port of Palermo which includes the Marina Fountain to your bucket list!

Driving up Mt.Etna on January 7, 2024 from Zafferana Etnea. It’s an easy and comfortable 50 min drive to get to the base Etna from where you can take various excursions to the very top. However for us, the drive up, a nice bit chocolate and a few icy snowballs were enough. It was 13 degrees at the bottom and -1 degree on the hill, with windchill it was -16C. Keep in mind you have to travel with snow chains between November 15 - April 15 in all of Italy… We did not use snow chains. Happy travels 💛 #etna #visitsicily
