Saitama Prefecture dreaming…

Saitama Prefecture neighbours Tokyo, making it an easy escape for a day trip or overnighter. One of the most popular areas to explore is Kawagoe, a quaint town lined with stunning and well-preserved Edo-period merchant houses, which are now boutiques, restaurants, souvenirs and snack shops.

Enthusiasts of Japan’s train culture shouldn’t miss The Railway Museum in Omiya which has dozens of real train cars spanning 140 years of railway history. Much of the museum is interactive; you can sit in many of the train cars and try a simulation of driving a Shinkansen while kids can drive miniature trains along a 300-meter track.

For more outdoorsy experiences, head to Chichibu for its forested mountains and temples or explore Sayama Hills, said to have inspired Studio Ghibli's ‘My Neighbor Totoro’.

Saga Prefecture dreaming…

Saga Prefecture, in the Southwest of Japan, is famous for its 400-year history as the porcelain capital of the country, producing some of the world’s finest ceramics, known as Arita porcelain (or Imari ware). The town is still full of skilled porcelain artisans selling both traditional and contemporary designs. Other highlights of Arita include the Kyushu Ceramic Museum and the stunning Arita Sueyama Jinja shrine. Its Arita porcelain torii gate and lion dog statues make it one of the most unusual and striking shrines in Japan.

Elsewhere in the prefecture, visit Takeo Shrine, which has a distinctive white facade. The shrine dates back to 735, while the camphor tree on its grounds is thought to be around 3,000 years old.

An even more ancient site is Yoshinogari History Park, where you can see Japan’s largest site of Yayoi (3rd century) ruins.

In November, don’t miss the Saga International Balloon Fiesta which has more hot air balloons than any other event in Asia.

Niigata Prefcture dreaming…

Niigata Prefecture, in Japan's northwest, is known for its winter sports, hiking, onsen hot springs, rice and sake. Naeba and Myoko's snowy slopes provide thrilling adventures for winter sports enthusiasts while Sado Island, once a place of exile for those considered difficult by the government, is a cultural retreat. Those exiled include, most famously, Emperor Juntoku, Nichiren Shonin (a Buddhist monk), and Zeami (considered to have perfected Noh theatre). Exiles with such academic and cultural expertise ensured Sado developed a rich culture and singular traditions that endure today.

In Niigata’s countryside, the Hosh*toge rice terraces showcase the art of cultivation amidst breathtaking vistas. Meanwhile, the Kiyotsu Gorge's Tunnel of Light enchants visitors with its mesmerizing illuminations and unusual perspectives of this majestic landscape.

Happy Children’s Day from Japan! 🎏🎏🎏

Golden Week, at the end of April and beginning of May, is Japan’s longest holiday period. One of its public holidays is Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi), on May 5th. Colorful koi carp flags fluttering throughout the country herald its arrival.

Households with young boys (Girl’s Day is celebrated on March 3rd) hoist koi flags outside, and they’re strung up across rivers around Japan, too. The large black carp represents the father, the red represents the mother and the small blue one represents the young boy. You may also see samurai armour and helmets (to represent the wish for boys to grow up strong and powerful. If you’re in Japan during Golden Week, don’t miss the opportunity to try kashiwa mochi, a bean-paste stuffed mochi wrapped in an edible oak leaf.

Nara Prefecture dreaming…

Nara Prefecture is steeped in history. It was Japan’s first permanent capital city and served as the seat of the Emperor from 710 to 794. It is often considered the cradle of civilisation in Japan. Due to its historical importance, the city remains full of ancient National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, including some of Japan's oldest and largest temples. The most famous temple is Todaiji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 752 and home to the world’s largest bronze Buddha.
A bonus of exploring its ancient temples is encountering the tame Sika deer that wander around the grounds.

Elsewhere in the prefecture, Mt. Yoshino is known as Japan’s most famous cherry blossom viewing locations. The mountain’s slopes are planted with more than 30,000 trees that line the paths to the peak.

The ancient Kumano Kodo, a network of pilgrimage trails also winds through Nara Prefecture. One of the most historic sites in Kashihara Jingu, the shrine where Japan's first Emperor, Jimmu, ascended the throne.

On April 27th, it officially opens for the season, so hikers can enjoy its mountain trails, monkeys and other wildlife and Taisho Pond, formed in 1915 when Mt. Yakedake erupted and dammed the Azusa River.

Planning your trip around the blooming of cherry blossom is a bit of a gamble; the sakura forecasts can shift and change until the last moment. But, if you’re willing to travel a little, the sakura season is far lengthier than you may have thought.

Hirosaki Castle Park, in the northernmost reaches of Japan’s largest island of Honshu has a cooler climate and, thus, blooms a little later than much of the rest of the country. The park surrounds an early 19th-century castle, built to replace a 17th-century castle that burnt down after being struck by lightning. The grounds are one of the country’s most famous cherry blossom viewing sites. It has 2,500 cherry trees forming a tunnel which covers the castle moat with petals when they begin to fall.

This year, the full bloom in Hirosaki is predicted to be around April 19th.

Spring in Japan might mean sakura and sunshine across much of the country, but in the chilliest parts of Toyama, it means the snow is thawing just enough for snowploughs to have carved a deep corridor through it. Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is open from now until mid-June when bus tours travel between walls of snow that tower up to 20 meters overhead.

Nagasaki Prefecture dreaming...

Nagasaki Prefecture, in southwest Japan, was an early gateway to international trade, which is evident in its European-style homes and strong ties to China and Korea. Despite enduring tragic events like the atomic bombing in World War II and volcanic eruptions, Nagasaki has emerged as a beacon of peace and reconciliation, embracing its diverse heritage.

Nagasaki still has strong international influences. Its second largest city, Sasebo, is home to a U.S. Navy base and one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions is Huis Ten Bosch, a Netherlands-themed park with canals, windmills, tulip gardens and Dutch architecture.

A visit to Nagasaki should always include an exploration of its islands. Tsushima, which is so close to South Korea that you can see its buildings and mountains on a clear day, is a lush retreat with mountain forests covering 89 percent of it. Iki is an isolated island known for its fishing and swimming beaches, and the Goto Islands are known for their Christian settlements and UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
