Experience Deep Japan in Nagaoka City, Niigata - Tour a Sake Brewery and Visit a Shrine!
Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture is home to the second highest number of sake breweries in Japan. One of the most famous is Asahi-Shuzo, loved for its diverse lineup of sake, including "Kubota" and "Asahiyama," painstakingly brewed using delicious Niigata rice and water, as well as seasonal and sparkling sake. Asahi-Shuzo is open for tours, where you can learn about the culture and practices of sake brewing while tasting several different brews.
After having your fill of sake, head to Hotokusan Inari Inner Shrine, a 5-minute drive away. This shrine is steeped in history, and is characterized by a huge vermilion torii gate and grand structures. Local customs encourage one to pray while lighting five colored candles in a specific order. At the Yomatsuri Festival, held each year on November 2-3, the shrine is filled with lit candles, promising a wondrous spectacle.
Visit Nagaoka and experience the true depth of Japanese culture for yourself!

Discover Japan's Brewing Culture in the Settaya District of Nagaoka!
Rice is the main ingredient of classic Japanese products like sake, soy sauce, and miso. Being one of Japan’s leading rice producing regions, Niigata Prefecture is home to numerous breweries making these essential ingredients.
Among them, the charming traditional Settaya district of Nagaoka City is home to many old-fashioned breweries with long histories making sake, miso, and soy sauce. Many of these breweries offer drink and food tastings and tours, so you can experience traditional Japanese cuisine culture while enjoying the charming wooden architecture, stone walls, and ambient streetscape.
Take a break at Eguchi Dango, established in 1902. This traditional confectionery store sells “mitarashi dango,” which are dumplings made from Niigata rice with a soy sauce-based sauce; and “sasa dango,” Japanese mugwort dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. Enjoy these old-time treats while gazing upon the gorgeous garden.
Nagaoka is two stations away from Niigata Station by bullet train, making it a convenient side trip to your around Niigata City adventure!

Watch the Yamakoshi Bullfight in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture
Nagaoka, located in the southern part of central Niigata Prefecture, is a region blessed with abundant nature and traditions born from its long history. One of the many highlights of Nagaoka is its ancient tradition of bullfighting, which we’re featuring in this post!
Cattle were long used in Japan for farming and transporting goods. From this, bullfighting, where two bulls bash and crash into each other, became a form of entertainment in the Yamakoshi area of Nagaoka, and is said to have a history of 1,000 years. The bulls, which weigh over a ton each, engage in fierce, intense battle, however, they are regularly pulled apart by humans to ensure that they do not get hurt.
Nagaoka, along with the neighboring city of Ojiya, is also the birthplace of colorful “nishikigoi” carp. There are lots of places to see these so-called “swimming jewels,” so definitely stop by for a look!

Nagaoka Fireworks are completely different the other fireworks.
Starting at 10:30p.m on August 1st 1945 , large B29 bombers flew over Nagaoka and continued bombing the city for one hour and 40 minutes.
The bombing burned down 80% of the downtown area and claimed over 1480 lives in a deluge of fire. Restoration Festival on August 1st, 1946, one year after the bombing. This festival helped comfort the hearts of the war-afflicted citizens of Nagaoka and encouraged them to restore the war-devastated city by working together with all their strength. The annual Nagaoka Festival has its origin in this 1946 restoration festival.
Nagaoka Fireworks are always presented with the special thoughts of Nagaokans in memory of the our prayers for the pursuit of everlasting peace.

We launched 20000 different kind of fireworks for two days and non stop for 2 hours.
