Sakura at Dawn in Matsushima
In the next few days we expect the cherry blossoms ("sakura") in Matsushima to bloom. Our most famous viewing spot with 260 cherry trees and Matsushima Bay in the background is Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park (西行戻しの松公園). This scenic overlook is about a 20 minutes walk (or 5 min. taxi ride) from Matsushimakaigan Station.
As it faces Matsushima Bay to the east, sunrise is a perfect time to enjoy the view.

Shin Tomiyama Timelapse
Shin Tomiyama Scenic Overlook
The easiest place to get a great view of Matsushima Bay by foot is Shin Tomiyama. Take the train to Matsushima Station and then walk about 10 minutes uphill to this spot. Shin Tomiyama has a little covered picnic area if you want to bring a snack and enjoy some shade. When you're ready to leave, it's right on the way to Zuiganji and the temple area. Just walk down the hill and make a right.

Did you catch last night's "rainbow bridge"? If you missed it, here is a sped up timelapse video of what Fukuurabashi looked like. The next time it will be illuminated in this moving rainbow pattern is August 15th and 16th and then again for Christmas.
