The Japanese Koma-inu.
Despite being a similar creature as the Shiisa, these figures are used only in shrines and temples. Also the origin of the lions are different, as the Koma-inu came from the Korean tradition to Japan. While the Shiisa is a Ryukyu culture origin being influenced by Chinese culture.
They date back to 1879, before Okinawa was belonging to Japan.

the symbol and protector of Okinawa.

The shisa is a legendary creature of the Ryukyuan culture (heritage of Okinawan culture).
It is half lion and half dog.

Believed to come to the Okinawan culture from China, it is also today a symbol for protection. Often found as souvenirs, or as figures in front of houses and buildings.
You will always find the Shiisa-lion in pairs. Left and right side of entrances.

The one with the closed mouth is the female and the open mouthed one is male.

SETSUBUN - A STORY OF JAPANESE EXORCISM (The Bean Throwing Festival)

Did you ever hear of The Battle between Priests and Demons? This battle is taking place every year and the weapon is surprising: BEANS!

This Exorcism Ritual is still going on every year on February 3rd.Japan is indeed a country of many weird but interesting traditions.

Let´s have a look at one of the traditional events of the great fight between DEMON vs PRIESTS. But not only priests, also children are invited to such events and they are the ones that have to fear the Oni most. Who will win the fight? Watch to the end to find out.

One of my favorite views in Tokyo
Looking down to the Sumida River. The Chuo Bridge was used in many movies and serials, as it is one of the most attractive river views.

There are water-buses passing this area, starting from Asakusa. Also you can have a jet ski or canoe experience along the Sumida river.
