A few days ago, the Cabinet Secretary for The National Treasury, presented his budget statement to the National Assembly. Migrants safaris East Africa is pleased to highlight three main changes that will affect the Tourism Sector.

The great news for the tourism sector is that Mr Henry Rotich has proposed to remove Value Added Tax (VAT) on commissions earned by Tour Operators. This is certainly most welcome news.

Additionally, the cabinet secretary has removed VAT on park fees which will be a welcome reprieve for both local and international tourists. Hopefully, this move will spur growth particularly in domestic tourism.

Thirdly and perhaps sadly, international tourists will now have to part with USD 50 instead of the prevailing USD 40 as airport tax. The Government has made it clear that the increase in tax will not benefit Kenya Airports Authority as is the custom but will instead be appropriated to a special Tourism Promotion Fund. Perhaps if the money is well used to promote tourism the increased airport tax may well be a bitter but effective pill.

On the balance the changes are commendable. However, what is needed for the tourism sector to flourish once more is not so much as an increase in funding for tourism but a complete overhaul and beefing of the entire country’s security. Any lapse in security or terrorist attack is too costly. And with an approaching election at the height of summer the changes may not have their desired impact. Perhaps our politicians may want to consider moving the election to an off-peak period.

Extinct in the Wild

The northern white rhino is a subspecies of white rhino, which used to range over parts of Uganda, Chad, Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Years of widespread poaching and civil war in their home range have devastated northern white rhino populations, and they are now considered to be extinct in the wild. Only three remain, all live on Ol Pejeta.
The Story of the Northern Whites:

On December 20th, 2009, four of the world’s last remaining seven northern white rhinos arrived at Ol Pejeta. Najin, Fatu, Sudan and Suni had been living in Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic. All previous breeding attempts in the Zoo had been futile, and the hope was that the climate and rich grasslands of Ol Pejeta, a native habitat for the animals, would provide them with more favourable breeding conditions.

TOURISM ON ITS WAY UP

Direct flights between Kenya and the United States could finally become a reality in four months, the government now says.

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said Kenya had completed “almost all” relevant audit requirements by the United States aviation authorities, hence the bold projection.

“We anticipate that we shall commence direct flights to the USA by May 2016, having as of now cleared almost all aviation audit issues,” Mr Macharia told the Nation.

Kenya has been pushing for the introduction of the direct flights for years now without success.

If it happens this year, the plan is expected to be a huge win for among others, Kenya’s hard-hit tourism sector as it will form a direct pipeline for American tourists coming straight to Kenya.

Analysts say it would also stimulate business between the two countries.

PAINFUL PILL TO SWALLOW
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is saddened that the planet earth is inching closer to extinction of the rare northern white rhinoceros after the death of 41-year-old Nola in the US. Nolas’s death at the weekend at the San Diego Zoo in California leaves the world with three individuals, all in Kenya at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Nola was the only female in the Western World, including North America, South America, and Europe. She was wild caught in the Shambe area, which is located "in the southern savanna woodlands of Sudan and was rescued from the violent poaching that is prevalent in that region when she was only a few years old." Her age upon capture has been estimated more closely at being 18 months old. She belonged to the Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic, but since 1989 she had been on loan in San Diego.
