Last week's encounter with nature's unfiltered reality was as breathtaking as it was a sombre reflection on the cycle of life.

In the heart of the Mara, we witnessed the Rongai pride lionesses standing over their recent conquest—a pregnant giraffe. Tragically, the circle of life had closed prematurely for the unborn foal, its existence curtailed before it even began. Yet, amidst this scene of loss, life's enduring spirit manifested in the most heartwarming manner. The pride's cubs, innocent to the complexities of existence, transformed the fallen giant's remains into their playground. With the carcass serving as an unlikely climbing frame, they engaged in a lively game of hide and seek, tumbling over each other with a mischievous glee that belied the gravity of their environment.

This stark dichotomy of life and death, so vividly on display, drew a reflective line through the heart, reminding us of nature's relentless cycle.

By the next morning, the cycle turned anew as the Black Rockers had also arrived and had their fill, adding another layer to the wilderness's complex narrative, where each day is both an end and a beginning.

However, we can all play our part in conserving this species in various ways.

Through on-the-ground research and community engagement activities, they continuously develop innovative ways to monitor and protect the species. You can support them through direct donations or simply by following their work and spreading information about it.

This quirky, medium-sized bird, named for its hammer-shaped head, is a marvel of the avian world! Found near water sources across Africa, the Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) is known for its incredible nest-building skills.

Hamerkops build massive nests, some weighing over 50 kg, using up to 8,000 sticks! These architectural feats are dome-shaped with side entrances, often large enough to support the weight of a person.

Preferring wetlands and riversides, these birds are fascinating to watch as they hunt for fish and amphibians in shallow waters. Their synchronized courtship displays and unique "kek-kek-kek" calls add to their charm.

New wildlife hide at Governors' Mugie, Laikipia

Discreetly sunken into the ground, this hide offers an unobtrusive perspective and eye-level views of animals and birds at the waterhole. Guests can spend any amount of time in the well-designed structure, which has four bunk beds, a bathroom and a wide working bench with charging sockets.

Expect all kinds of activity throughout the day; elephants, giraffes, impalas, buffalos, zebras, and more will come and go to quench their thirst, especially in the dry season.
