Lions spend most of the day sleeping. A male may sleep from 18 to 20 hours a day. However following a large meal, these male cats may actually sleep an entire 24 hours of a day.
Female lions are not far behind their male counterparts. They will easily sleep 15 to 18 hours a day. They spend more time caring for the pride and hunting.

Nairobi in Kenya comes across as one of the most amazing place on earth! Where else, just on the edge of a capital city 15-20 minutes from the centre of town can you go see lions, rhinos, and much more? The Nairobi National Park is teeming with game and contains almost everything you might see in bigger more remote parks, except elephants. Habitats range from open grass plains to rocky river gorges and dry forest, over a huge number of bird and animals species. It takes 3-4 hours to get around and see most of the park.

The Rift Valley is one of the wonders of the world, stretching from the Middle East, down through Africa, onto Mozambique. The view as you approach from Nairobi is unbelievable. The ground suddenly disappears from under you to show the huge expanse of the great rift. The rift valley is home to Kenya’s many lakes, the first lake from Nairobi is the beautiful, deep-green Lake Naivasha, 90 km from Nairobi. Lake Naivasha Basin holds two small National Parks, both of which are well worth a visit. Excellent bird watching, a large population of hippo, good fishing and a wide range of superb hotels, camps and lodges make Lake Naivasha a favoured spot for weekend breaks.

The first Park in the Lake Naivasha Basin is the Mount Longonot National Park suitable forh iking, rock climbing, biking and normal game viewing activities, this park is perfect for the more active visitor.

The second park is the Hell's Gate National Park, famous for its natural hot geysers, eagle and vulture breeding grounds, obsidian deposits and extinct volcanoes, it is possible to walk, game drive, camp, cycle and rock climb within the park.

Heading further northwest, Lake Nakuru is the next stop, home to stunning flocks of flamingos, which literally turn the lakeshore pink in colour. The Notable game within the lake area is hippo and the diverse bird life. Both black and white rhino are now resident in the sanctuary and Rothschild giraffe, buffalo, impala, eland, warthog, Mountain Reedbuck, klipspringers and Black and White Colobus Monkeys are all plentiful. This park is world-renowned and is a beacon for ornithologists, scientists and wildlife filmmakers.

The next lake jewel scattered along the Rift Valley floor is Lake Bogoria, a spectacular sight, reflecting searing blue skies and the rose pink of flamingo. With over 135 species of bird recorded, the area is of significant ornithological interest. The surrounding bushed grasslands are home to a number of animals, most notably the very rare Greater Kudu antelope.

The Masai Mara game reserve probably the most famous park in all Africa, is 270 km away from Nairobi, about 4 hours drive. The Mara is well known for the part it plays in the seasonal migration from the Serengeti of 1.3 million Wildebeest and quarter of a million Zebra, following the annual rains. The Mara region however provides for wonderful game viewing year round. Over 80 species of mammals, dozens of amphibian and reptile species and nearly 500 species of birds have been recorded in the Mara eco-system.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is often described as one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World”.
Nowhere in the world is there a movement of animals as immense as the wildebeest migration where
over two million wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelles and zebra migrate from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

These huge herds generally move in the same pattern each year in a constant search for fresh grazing areas. While the migration’s movement is entirely dependent on the rainfall patterns each year, the pattern can be broadly explained as follows.

Following the start of the early rains, the herds begin to arrive on the short-grass plains of the Serengeti in late November and December. They will stay in the Ndutu and northern Ngorongoro Conservation area within the southern Serengeti until March, with most of the wildebeest calves born around February, and in April they will begin migrating north.

By May, the wildebeest herds can be found in the Serengeti’s western corridor around Moru Kopjes and western Seronera. Here they are joined by large herds of zebra and a few Grant’s and Thompson’s gazelles.

The migration herds are often halted on the south side of the Grumeti River around June where they will congregate into high densities before crossing the river. Once across, the herds continue moving north during July and August at which time the herds will begin to cross the crocodile infested waters of the Mara River; the crossings are one of the migration’s greatest highlights.

After the first crossings, the herds will remain in the Maasai Mara from July until October when they will migrate south through Loliondo and the Lobo area of the Serengeti returning to the short-grass plains of the eastern Serengeti by November.

Kenya is one of my favorite Holiday destination. For me, it's the best place to go on a Safari, as it's so wild. Most other countries have conservation areas, whereas in Kenya, the wildlife is just there. You go to the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu, Lake Nakuru, and there they are Wild.

22/01/2015

The Oryx:
Kenya's Tana River divides the range of East Africa's two types of oryx the beisa oryx (Oryx g. beisa) and the fringe-eared oryx (Oryx g. callotis).
The fringe-eared oryx ranges from Kenya to central Tanzania. The beisa oryx ranges from Ethiopia through Somalia into northeastern Uganda and Kenya.

Physical Characteristics:
The oryx is a large antelope of striking appearance with long, spear like horns. It has a thick, horse like neck with a short mane and a compact, muscular body. A defined pattern of black markings that contrast with the white face and fawn-colored body are prominently displayed in dominance rituals to emphasize the length of horns and strength of the shoulder.

The head is marked with black triangular patches and broad black stripes that extend from the base of the horns over the eyes to the cheeks. A ring of black encircles the throat and runs down the neck to the chest. The ears end in a black tip (a black tassel hangs from the ear tip of the fringe-eared oryx). A narrow black stripe runs along the spine, and another one separates the lower flank from the white underparts of the body. The white forelegs have a black ring above the knee and a black patch below. The black tail tassel reaches to the hocks.

The oryx's ringed horns are up to 30 inches long, making them formidable weapons. The female's horns are often longer and thinner than the male's.

Habitat:
Originally, various oryx species were found in all of Africa's arid regions. One species that occurred on the Arabian Peninsula was exterminated recently but has now been reintroduced into the wild from captive stock. Well adapted to the conditions of their hot, arid habitats, oryx can live as long as 20 years.

Behavior:
The social system of the oryx is unusual in that non territorial males live in mixed groups with females, or with females and their young. Males that dominate are territorial to a degree, marking their areas with dung deposits. Groups are composed of 10 to 40 males and females of all ages and both sexes; herds of up to 200 are common in some East African habitats.

The dominance hierarchy among oryx is based on age and size. As they grow, calves test one another in what look like games, though in reality are tests of strength. As the hierarchy becomes established, the need to fight is reduced. Ritual displays replace actual contact, except when evenly matched individuals may have to fight to establish their rank. Along with lateral displays, oryx perform a slow, prancing walk and sometimes break into a gallop. When several males are making these displays, they may clash horns.

Herd composition in the wild constantly changes according to need. Oryx wanting to drink, for example, form a group to go to water, or females with young form a group that moves more slowly. The result is a social system that allows for individual needs but retains the advantage of group living. Oryx range widely over a large area, but their keen sense of smell alerts them to rain in the area, so that groups quickly assemble, often in herds of 200 or more, to feed on new growth.

Diet:
Oryx typically feed in early morning and late afternoon and sometimes on moonlit nights. Their diets consists mainly of coarse grasses and browse from thorny shrubs. In desert areas they consume thick leaved plants, wild melons, as well as roots and tubers they dig out of the ground. They may drink if water is available but can survive days or even weeks without it.

Plants growing in arid areas inhabited by oryx have also adapted to the hot, dry conditions and either store water or have mechanisms to prevent excess loss. Plants collect dew, gradually releasing it during the hotter parts of the day. Some plants increase their water content by 25 to 40 percent, so when oryx feed late at night or early in the morning, it provides them with both food and water.

Caring for the Young
A female leaves the herd to give birth and hides the calf for 2 or 3 weeks, visiting a few times a day to nurse it. The newborn is an inconspicuous brown color. The black markings begin to appear when the calf is ready to return to herd with its mother. Calves are suckled for 6 to 9 months and reach maturity at 18 to 24 months. Most young males migrate out of their natal group to join other groups.
