African Elephant:

The African elephant derives its name from the shape of their ears which assumes the map of Africa. It is recognized as the largest terrestrial mammal, playing a vital role in the maintenance of its ecosystem. There exist two distinct species: the larger Savanna elephant and the comparatively smaller Forest elephant.

As herbivores, these majestic creatures consume up to 300 pounds of vegetation daily and can ingest as much as 50 gallons of water. Both male and female elephants possess ivory tusks, which serve a variety of functions. Renowned for their intelligence and intricate social structures, elephant herds are matriarchal in nature and communicate through a combination of vocalizations and body language. They have eyelashes and t***s just like humans. It is imperative to note that they bury their dead ones just like humans by holding funerals as well as anniversary memorials in the same manner.

The lifespan of elephants typically ranges from 60 to 70 years, accompanied by an extended gestation period of 22 months. Unfortunately, their habitats have diminished significantly due to poaching for ivory and habitat destruction, resulting in their classification as endangered species. Elephants are essential ecosystem engineers, contributing to vegetation management and seed dispersal. Furthermore, they hold considerable cultural significance in numerous African societies. Therefore, concerted conservation efforts are imperative for their continued survival.

Humpback whales are remarkable marine mammals known for their size, migratory behavior, and unique traits. They typically measure 40-60 feet long and weigh 25-40 tons, with females being slightly larger. Humpbacks migrate up to 5,000 miles between feeding grounds in polar regions and breeding grounds in warmer waters. They primarily feed on krill and small fish using a bubble net feeding technique. Males are famous for their complex songs, which can last up to 20 minutes and are believed to be used for communication during mating. Humpbacks are also known for their acrobatic displays, such as breaching and tail-slapping.

With a lifespan of 45-50 years, they reach sexual maturity between 5-10 years. Once heavily hunted, their populations have rebounded since the 1980s whaling moratorium, and they are now classified as Least Concern, though they still face threats from ship strikes and environmental changes. Humpbacks have distinctive long pectoral fins and unique tail patterns for individual identification. Females give birth every 2-3 years after an 11-12 month gestation, with calves born in warm waters. Despite their size, they primarily consume small organisms, playing a vital role in marine ecosystems and attracting whale watchers with their surface behaviors.

Similar to the Maasai Mara - Serengeti wildebeest migration, the humpback whales commute into Kenya`s Coast - Kisite and Watamu during July - September window.
