Kenya Airways will offer its customers a unique travel experience between two great gateways. The new route will be the fastest connection from East Africa to New York, with a 15 hours duration eastbound and 14 hours westbound. The ultra-long-haul flight, unique to Kenya Airways network, will be operating its state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner with a capacity of 234 passengers. The flight will depart every day from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi at 23:25 and arriving at JFK airport in New York at 06:25 the following day.

“The launch of this new route is a symbol of our [Kenya Airways] comeback as The Pride of Africa,” says Michael Joseph, Kenya Airways Board of Directors Chairman. “Fly with us with confidence. We [Kenya Airways] are determined to succeed.”

The naming of Kenya’s Angama Mara luxury safari lodge as the best of its kind in the world in 2017 by the US travel magazine Jetsetter is more than a feel-good story about the country’s hospitality industry.

It underlines the fact that Kenya still has one of the most irresistible safari tourism products to sell to the world and that the industry is on a steady recovery path following recent setbacks from travel advisories.

Although the Maasai Mara-based lodge was the only one to make the Jetsetter list this year, the country boasts many similar world-class tourist facilities.

With barely contained enthusiasm, Safari Club International (SCI) announced on its own initiative today that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has reversed critical elephant protections established during the Obama administration, allowing imports of elephant trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia. For decades, Zimbabwe has been run by a dictator who has targeted and killed his political opponents, and operated the country’s wildlife management program as something of a live auction. Remember, it was Zimbabwe where Walter Palmer shot Cecil, one of the most beloved and well-studied African lions, who was lured out of a national park for the killing. Palmer paid a big fee even though it did irreparable damage to the nation’s reputation.

Hotels bank on interest in Mount Kenya adventure tourism for growth - Hotels, lodges and camps in central region are banking on the promotion of Mount Kenya as an adventure destination to help revive tourism in the circuit.
According to Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC) Mount Kenya region chairman Edward Wangechi, tourism has taken a dive due to the repeat presidential election stand-off.
The KAHC official said hotel occupancy in Mount Kenya circuit of Murang’a, Nyeri, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Samburu and parts of Nyandarua is currently averaging at between 10 per cent and 20 per cent.
Ranch invasions
In May, he added, tourism in Mount Kenya region was hit hard by the ranch invasions which took place in Laikipia.
After the Laikipia drawback, he said, business improved in July from an occupancy of between 20 per cent and 30 per cent to 65 per cent.
“Normally, hotels, lodges and camps in the Mount Kenya circuit depend on tourist flow from the Kenya Coast, but the numbers have dipped due to the political uncertainty,” he said.
Conferences and family packages, which they used to rely on, he added, had nosedived due to the top seat stand-off.
Due to the hard times, Mr Wangechi said hotels and lodges were struggling to stay afloat.

Mount Kenya region was in May hit hard by the ranch invasions which took place in Laikipia.

WTM 2017: Kenya outlines tourism strategy

New transport links, a modern cruise terminal and more niche product have been revealed as part of a strategy to drive Kenya’s tourism development over the next decade.

The National Tourism Blueprint 2030 is a four-point strategy developed as part of the country’s wider economic, social and political policy document known as Vision 2030.

Speaking at World Travel Market in London, the principal secretary of the ministry for tourism, Fatuma Hirsi Mohamed, said: “In the past year, we have worked on the National Tourism Blueprint 2030, so that our vision is in alignment with the country’s vision, and to bring tourism up to speed with modern trends and the requirements of tourists today.

“We are looking at four main areas: product development, so that we bring into play more than just the usual beach and safari. We want to bring in sports tourism, adventure, heritage, gastronomy, as we have 44 tribes and each has its own culture and food.

“Then innovation, using new ways of promoting Kenya with apps and technology. Our marketing strategy will also take into consideration how people are looking for destinations using social media and user-generated content.
