The lilac-breasted roller is Kenya’s National Bird because of the wide array of colours on its feather coat. In total, it has around 8 colours: green, white, black, yellow, turquoise, dark blue, reddish-brown, and lilac.
The colours are supposed to represent the many different tribes that make up Kenya’s community. It is a beautiful reference to the rich diversity that exists within Kenya.
✓ The Swahili word for the lilac-breasted roller is much less of a mouthful than the English word. Interestingly, there are two subspecies of the bird, the lilac-breasted roller being one. The other one is known as the lilac-throated roller or even the blue-breasted roller.
✓ The lilac-breasted roller is not a dimorphic animal. Both females and males are equally as stunning as each other and it is hard to tell the difference between the two.Dimorphic animals are those that show clear visible differences between the two sexes. Peacocks, baboons, spiders and even humans are all examples of dimorphic animals.

Kenya recognizes over fifty tribes of native people. The Maasai were the dominating tribe at beginning of 20th century. They are one of the very few tribes who have retained most of their traditions, lifestyle and lore. In common with the wildlife with which they co-exist, the Maasai need a lot of land. Unlike many other tribes in Kenya, the Maasai are semi-nomadic and pastoral: they live by herding cattle and goats.

"Embrace the holiday spirit and make unforgettable memories with your loved ones! ❤️🎄Discovering the vibrant culture and spectacular sights of Kenya has made this holiday truly extraordinary. 🌟✨ #HolidayJoy #ExploreKenya #FamilyLove"
Dominance in male lions start from a young age and coalitions can either be brothers or none related males that join up during their nomadic stage, which is from about 3-5 year of age. Coalitions are generally 2-3 males, but coalitions of up to 9 males have been recorded, and within these coalitions there exists a clear hierarchy, that may be challenged from time to time. Although a dominant male will generally be responsible for 80-100% of the cubs in his territory, the conflict between coalition males is most prominent when there a female is in oestrous.
Mating generally last about 5 days but can go on for longer and during the first two days they can mate almost every 20-30 minutes but as the days progress the intervals increase and the male needs some rest, it is often then that you see the next in the hierarchy become a bit opportunistic and approach the female, and fighting between the two males may erupt as depicted in the video.
Generally, these fights are very short and not really a fight for dominance but more one of putting the challenging male back in his place! This is the behaviour we are observing in the two newly introduced males.

KENYA is home to two distinct species of zebra: the plains zebra and the endangered Grevy’s zebra. Grevy’s zebra can be distinguished by their thinner stripes, larger bodies, white bellies, and bigger, rounder ears. Aside from their physical differences, the two species also have remarkably different social structures. Plains zebra’s social interactions are characterized by relatively stable harems (or groups of females with a male), whereas Grevy’s zebra have much more tenuous social relationships, with loosely associated females passing through different males’ territories.
Although the Grevy’s zebra and plains zebra typically occupy different habitats, in some areas, like the Laikipia Plateau of Kenya, these two species live on the same landscape. In fact, they are often found side-by-side. This coexistence provides a unique opportunity for researchers to study how the different species respond to the same changes in the environment. These efforts help to provide deeper insights into zebra ecology and potential approaches to zebra conservation.

It's not a behaviour often captured on film, we were blessed to having have had the chance to deep in the hearts of Maasai Mara 🇰🇪🇰🇪
When it comes to lion mating rituals, it’s all about speed and stamina (and plenty of aggression). And monogamy is out of the window – females will mate with more than one suitor and since there’s no specific breeding period, lions mate several times a year – and a mating marathon can involve twenty to forty romps a day (the amorous pair often doesn’t even stop to eat!).

Why is the lion the king of the jungle?
Although a lion is referred to as the king of the jungle, interestingly he does not live in the jungle. They instead live in open grasslands – the savannas, rocky hills, and scrublands, but definitely not jungles.
Lions are called the king of the jungle because the male lion exhibits a supreme attitude. His actions and behaviour are reflections of the way he thinks – a superior one.
The lion displays attributes of a powerful ruler, although they are only rulers of their territory. It is these actions through his behaviour. This makes the other wild animals in the animal kingdom respect the lion more than any other animal.
The lion is said to be a powerful animal with intimidating survival instincts, like some of the rulers (kings) in history, which maybe is why the lion is referred to as the King.
