WILDEBEEST CALVING SEASON

The Wildebeest Calving Season happens in the South of Serengeti, Ndutu Conservation Area and some parts of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Generally, the Wildebeest calving location is to the South of Serengeti National Park. Since the major Wildebeest crossings happens in Masai Mara Kenya between June to October, these calving season of Wildebeests happen in January to March of every year.

The South of Serengeti, Ndutu Conservation Area, and some parts of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area offer a very conducive environment for Wildebeests to give birth to more than 8000 calves per day. Isn’t this a world wonder? The grass is more green, also the type of grass they feed on is perfect for the young calves being born on a daily basis.

Did you know, Flamingos can sleep standing on one leg?
Flamingos can stand on one foot for long periods of time — even long enough to fall asleep. But, why do they perform this balancing act? Research suggests that flamingos use more muscle power when standing on two legs, so standing on one leg may be less tiring.

Lake Nakuru National Park is famous for thousands of flamingoes that hang around the shores of the lake creating a pink plumage, in this park, there are two main species of flamingoes that are the lesser and greater Flamingoes and they are especially found on the shores of Lake Nakuru.

GERENUK - Africa's Cutest Antelope

1. Unusual Eating Habits

Unlike other antelopes who eat by grazing, the gerenuk often stands on its two hind legs and uses its two front legs to graze from tree branches. By standing up like this in combination with their long necks mean they can sometimes reach plants up to 2 metres (6 feet) high.

2. No Water Required

The gerenuk never has to drink water. Like giraffe, the plants they eat contain enough water to prevent them actually needing to drink it. This is what allows them to survive in desert areas.

3. Interesting Glands

Because its appearance wasn’t unusual enough, the gerenuk also has unusual glands. Like many other gazelles, they have preorbital glands in front of their eyes. These glands emit a tar-like substance to mark territory. More uniquely, they also have scent glands on their knees and in the split of their hooves.

4. Good Mamas

The gerenuk females are extremely caring mothers. They clean their young immediately after birth, feeds them two to three times a day and eats any leftover food to remove traces of scent that might attract predators. They also speak to their fawns in gentler tones, with soft bleating noises.

5. Threatened Population

Despite remaining under the radar, these little antelope are currently listed as ‘Near Threatened’ in terms of conservation status. Habitat loss and fragmentation caused by people has led to a decline in their population. There are only 95 000 remaining across five countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Southern Somali).

Red Elephants of Tsavo. Land of the man eating Lions.
The 'Red Elephants of Tsavo' are the ONLY red Elephants in the world. Actually, they are really the same colour as every other elephant in the world, but they just appear red due to constantly dust-bathing with the Park’s fine red volcanic soil. Over 10,000 of them inhabit the Park, so the chances of seeing one are hopefully pretty high.
