Rongai Pride
It is truly amazing to see this pride thriving. So many sub adults now it’s incredible. The Black Rock boys have done an amazing job, not to mention Olonkera as well. He played a major roll in contributing to the prides overall well being when the rains were coming down hard, the grass was really tall, and prey limited.
Although some cubs were lost at the time, hopefully we will see little ones happily running around soon.

HYENAS EATING HABITS
A single spotted hyena can eat at least 14.5 kg of meat per meal, and although they act aggressively toward each other when feeding, they compete with each other mostly through speed of eating, rather than by fighting as lions do. Spotted hyenas can take less than two minutes to eat a gazelle fawn, while a group of 35 hyenas can completely consume an adult zebra in 36 minutes. Spotted hyenas do not require much water, and typically only spend 30 seconds drinking.
When feeding on an intact carcass, spotted hyenas will first consume the meat around the loins and anal region, then open the abdominal cavity and pull out the soft organs. Once the stomach, its wall and contents are consumed, the hyenas will eat the lungs and abdominal and leg muscles. Once the muscles have been eaten, the carcass is disassembled and the hyenas carry off pieces to eat in peace. Spotted hyenas are adept at eating their prey in water: they have been observed to dive under floating carcasses to take bites, then resurface to swallow.

HYENAS & LEOPARDS RELATIONSHIP (Frenemies)
Needless to say, leopards and hyenas are the ultimate “frenemies” and their relationship is best described as a toxic friendship at least. When we receive a flood of leopard images from rangers, you can guarantee that it is accompanied by a folder of hyena images.
Find the leopards, find the hyenas! They’re always together, but theirs is a toxic relationship.
Points to consider ~
•Being in competition : The competition for food in the wild is high. The ones that survive are the strongest and the sneakiest – they generally come out tops. When a leopard carefully stalks, ambushes and takes down their prey in one swift motion; the art of the kill becomes nothing short of beautiful. Plenty of concentration and energy is expended during this hunt. The leopard realizes that, after all its hard work, that the hyenas may swoop in and steal the kill. With this in mind they very swiftly move the kill up to the top of a tree for safekeeping. Hyenas will normally circle the base of a tree waiting for morsels to drop to the ground. Competition for the meal? At an all time high!
• Walking on eggshells : Even when a kill is a safely stashed in the fork of a tree, there’s no guarantee that the leopard might knock the kill out of the tree accidentally. When this happens, the clans will emit an anxious high-pitched laugh and attempt to run off with the kill, Of course, there are times when a leopard will put up a fight and other times let the kill go. However, this does not stop the cat from gaining revenge. Rangers from different reserves have often watched leopards descend from a tree and quietly stalk the thieving clan in an effort to retrieve the kill. Leopards are constantly walking on eggshells around hyena clans!
So yes, the relationship between hyenas and leopards is a constant battle and emotional rollercoaster. And, in fact, hyenas serve such a purpose in the wild that our big cats actually need them to clean up

SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE RHINO & THE EGRET
Mutualism. The Egret cleans the Rhino, by eating ticks and other parasites off of it. The Rhino cannot live without the Egret, because the rhino has a hard time getting the ticks off of itself. The Egret also warns the Rhino if an enemy is approaching, because the Rhino is near (short)sighted.
There are between 35-50 black rhino in the Masai Mara at any one time (many traverse into the Serengeti as well). Sala's Camp is located on the edge of a dedicated black rhino sanctuary within the isolated southern Masai Mara and many of them are frequently seen in the area around Sala's along the Sand River.

The warthog-mongoose encounter is a rare example of mammals exhibiting a symbiotic relationship called mutualism, where two animal species form a partnership with benefits for both groups
Quite often the warthog will then lie down and actually lift its legs, and they'll swarm all over them. In these groups you've got 15 to 20 individuals and they can just cover the warthogs, the Packs of mongooses will pile onto warthogs to pick blood-filled ticks and other parasites from the warthogs' fur. The hogs get cleaned up while the mongoose get fed. Everybody wins—well, except for the ticks.
