Exploring Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, is a key feature of many of our tours in the country. While touring the city, you can expect to witness a guard of honor at the Ala-Too Square.

On August 16, 1998, the honor guard company of the National Guard of the Kyrgyz Republic made history as they assumed their position at the flagpole with the State Flag on Ala-Too Square.

Every day, in any weather, the guard is carried by two employees of the National Guard. The changing of the guard of honor takes place several times a day and attracts the attention of not only foreign guests, but also residents of the capital.

✅The Kyrgyz honor guard is notable for its unique marching style, characterized by a precise angle of 90 degrees in their steps.

The honor guard has been relieved from its position at the post only three times. Firstly, in 2009, amidst the replacement of the 18-meter flagpole with a taller 45-meter one. Then, in 2016, the guard of honor was absent for two yeats due to repair works during the initial phase of the reconstruction of the State Historical Museum of the Kyrgyz Republic. Finally, in late 2023, the guard of honor was temporarily excused from its duties for four days to facilitate the reconstruction of the honor guard cabin.

How to get to Kyrgyzstan?

The easiest way to get to Kyrgyzstan is to fly. There are several flights a day from Istanbul to Bishkek. There are also flights from Bishkek to Delhi, Dubai, Tashkent, Astana, Almaty, Urumqi, Islamabad, Seoul, El Kuwait, Sharjah and other destinations. International flights land at Manas International Airport, near Bishkek, and there are some flights to Osh.

Visitors can also cross into Kyrgyzstan via land borders from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and China. Some border crossings require extra documentation and permits to travel through restricted border regions, and may be closed on weekends and holidays. Travelers should be prepared and knowledgeable when crossing land borders to avoid extra hassles.

Historical tourism in Kyrgyzstan spans the events of millennia and digs into layers of half-forgotten history as it resurrects the memory of nomads, settlers and merchants of the past.

Step into early history at Cholpon-Ata Petroglyphs, which offer a rare glimpse into the pre-Islamic lifestyle of the Tian Shan Mountain’s early inhabitants. Piece together portions of the past at nomadic museums and interactive demonstrations of yurt constructions, or visit the remains of the medieval captial cities Uzgen and Balasagun. Uncover Kyrgyzstan’s most glorious Silk Road site at Tash Rabat Caravanserai, whose dubious origins and remote mountain locale only add to its mystique and enduring allure.

By the Middle Ages, Silk Road caravans had carved crude passageways through the treacherous mountain territory on their journey to and from neighboring China. The present-day city of Naryn was one such ancient stopover, as was the city of Osh. The long-revered Sulayman-Too Mountain in Osh still marks a halfway point on the Silk Road, while the lingering shadow of bygone travelers takes on living, breathing form at the lively Jayma Bazaar.

Historical tourism in Kyrgyzstan would not be complete without a look into modern history. Anyone curious about Kyrgyzstan’s Soviet era will appreciate the Kyrgyz State Historical Museum and Victory Square in Bishkek, as well as the Przhevalsky Museum in Karakol. Much of Bishkek, including the central Ala-Too Square, provides a classic example of Soviet-era architecture. If you time your visit to Ala-Too just right, you may even get to watch the changing of the guards.

Come interact with local history through independent travel or pre-arranged Kyrgyzstan tourism packages as you deepen your understanding of this ancient land. Explore all tours available in Kyrgyzstan by clicking the link provided in the first comment.

Dos and Don’ts in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is one of the most relaxed destinations in Central Asia, both in terms of official laws and the population’s reception of foreigners. While far from comprehensive, we hope this Kyrgyzstan travel advice can point you in the right direction as you gear up for your upcoming adventure:

✅DO:
🇰🇬Consider the elements when planning your trip, remembering that mountain roads can become dangerous or impassible in winter and that high-altitude yurt camps can be surprisingly chilly even in summer.

🇰🇬Be flexible, allowing for extra time in your itinerary due to weather conditions, last-minute scheduling changes and unplanned opportunities that may arise.

🇰🇬Practice responsible tourism by investing your money at homestays, small cafes, family-run souvenir shops and Kyrgyzstan tour programs which support local startups.

🇰🇬Be prepared to practice local customs when in someone’s home, including removing your shoes at the door, using outhouses and sitting on the ground for meals.

🇰🇬Come prepared to embrace the new, be it a novel experience, new-to-you sport or unusual food. You won’t regret it!

❌DON’T:
🇰🇬Wait until the last minute to withdraw cash, as hunting down a working ATM can be a challenge once you’ve left Bishkek.

🇰🇬Hitchhike or accept a homestay offer without paying the driver or owner for their kindness and services, which is standard protocol in Kyrgyzstan.

🇰🇬Expect most Kyrgyz people to speak English, particularly in rural areas.
Overlook the rich culture found in Kyrgyzstan’s cities and small towns, which can be just as compelling as its nature.

🇰🇬Set out alone in the mountains unless you are an experienced trekker.

Is Kyrgyzstan Safe for Travel?
Any locale ending in ‘stan’ tends to get a bad rap these days, a reputation wholly undeserved by as welcoming a nation as Kyrgyzstan. As of mid-2023, the nation maintained its Level 1 Category in the US Department of State’s travel advisory system, i.e. among the safest nations in the world to visit. Tourists who have gone before you can likewise testify to the hospitable, kind-hearted nature of Kyrgyzstan’s people, most of whom are eager to assure you leave with a glowing impression of their country and culture.

Our top travel safety tips for Kyrgyzstan would be to exercise normal safety precautions with your valuables, remain vigilant when traveling alone or at night, be aware of natural hazards such as altitude sickness and sudden changes in weather, and avoid unwarranted travel in the border areas near Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. With these guidelines in mind, come prepared to feel welcomed and well-cared for by the Kyrgyz people.

Nomad Games
Thousands of years ago, there occurred a division between the nomads and the farmers. The Kyrgyz became nomads that moved from one pasture to another with their herds, spending summers high in the mountains and winters in the lower valleys. This lifestyle is reflected in the everyday life and entertainment of the Kyrgyz people.

First held in 2014 in Kyrgyzstan and now held every two years, the World Nomad Games gathers athletes, artists, craftsmen and visitors from around the world. Previously, the first three editions of the World Nomad Games were held in Kyrgyzstan and the fourth edition was hosted by Iznik, Turkey. In previous years, delegations from almost every continent (except Antarctica).

The sports and competitions feature different games that have existed for centuries, including races, horse games, hunting demonstrations and wrestling.

Wrestling draws the most number of competitors. Athletes compete in traditional forms of wrestling from Central Asia, as well as mas wrestling, where an athlete attempts to wrestle a stick from his opponent. Intellectual games, like mangala (a board game popular across the world), build athlete’s abilities to think strategically against potential enemies. Hunting games featuring birds of prey and dogs test the agility and speed of animals as they chase a dummy target. The biggest draw of the Nomad Games are the horse games. In er enish, opponents wrestle on horseback, while in cirit, teams of riders try to hit the other riders with blunt javelins. The most popular sport is kok boru, where teams of riders fight for possession of a dead goat or sheep and try to carry it to a goal to score points. Kok boru is an intense game that can regularly draw thousands of spectators to cheer for their favorite teams.

Kyrgyzstan is adventurous, for where else can you live with a nomadic family in an authentic yurt?

Yurts are one of the most essential parts of Kyrgyz culture, and are more than just houses. They represent the family, the earth, and the universe, and cover everything from birth to death. Yurts hold much of Kyrgyz culture, from important rituals and ceremonies, to craftsmanship and traditional artistry.

Yurts can be found across Eurasia, though with slightly different materials, dimensions or traditions. Kyrgyz yurts are made of a cupola birch poles tied to a latticework that forms the vertical walls. The outside is made of felt and wool, which is water repellent and warm, and can be easily patched as needed. The top of the yurt is a wooden circle, called a tunduk, which forms one of the most essential symbols of family and the universe. A small flap of felt covers the tunduk, which can be opened when weather is nice to let in light and fresh air, and closed when the weather is cold and wet. The tunduk is one of the most essential designs in Kyrgyzstan, and is used on the flag. The whole design of yurts was centered around being both portable and flexible, suitable for any season or location.

Consider the elements when planning your trip, remembering that high-altitude yurt camps can be surprisingly chilly even in summer.
