Kitts is now the new "it" destination for travelers, cruise ship passengers and mega-rich jet setters. The larger of the 2 islands that make St. Kitts/Nevis, is located in the Leeward Islands approximately 1,300 miles south of Florida and is part of the British West Indies. The Caribbean Ocean is on one side of the island and the Atlantic to the other. The capital city of Basseterre is home to a l
arge cruise ship facility where the ships will dock. Kitts has been under rule from several countries in its past including Columbus claiming it for Spain in 1493. It changed hands between the French and British many times and as a result, the island has a mix of architecture. The town square in downtown Basseterre is called the "Circus" and modeled after London's Piccadilly Circus. Many colonial style buildings offer visitors much to see. The government built a road that circles the entire island so guests may see much of the 18 miles long x 5-mile wide island. The island today is split with a combination of old and new. At the north end of the island, you'll find the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; at the south end of the island is where the amazing sandy beaches are, as a result of the ancient volcanic activity, guests may see white, gray and even black sand.
