It is with a very sad heart that I announce that after waiting for two years for life to return to normal and for tourists to come back to visit our Island, this week I closed my business and sold my van.

I will never forget the people I met and the new friends I made along the way and you will remain in my heart always. Thank you for sharing all those “WOW” moments with me - all the laughter and joy of new beginnings and new explorations - we really did have fun now, didn’t we?!

As many will ask “what’s next Nan?” I can honestly share that I have no idea. After living abroad for 29 years, I am heading home to the US to start a new chapter. Rest assured it will be fun and filled with laughter - life is such a cool thing!

CHEERS to life and all that is yet to come!

Fondly,

Nan

COVID 19 - “Trouble don’t blow shell!”

CLE loves Cayman’s Word of the Week, courtesy of Kevin Goring. If we keep up our reading while our borders remain closed, we will so become authentic, professional, local interpreters in addition to simply the best tour guides?!

With the reopening of our borders on the horizon, perhaps you would like to brush up on your “Caymanian” before your arrival?!!

Courtesy of Kevin Goring, author of The Cayman Islands Dictionary, we are pleased to bring you the word of the day:

Fortylebbenteen (for-deh-leb-tene) - adjective:

1. Any high number that is seemingly impossible to count. 2. A lot. 3. An unbelievable amount. E.g. “I hear say dey gah ‘bout fortylebbenteen chickens up by Franklin Farm.”

Cayman recorded its 21st day in a row with no new positive COVID-19 results. The government and the people have worked hard to get here as we anxiously await to welcome visitors back to our shores. The borders are slated to reopen in September with strict restrictions to keep us and our guests safe, but it will be a few more months before we can fully reopen. In the meantime, over 1/2 of the population has been tested and everyone continues to follow the mandatory face masks rules to keep us COVID-free. Ours is truly a success story.

Ahhhhhhh, a picture perfect day in the Cayman Islands. Are you dreaming of visiting this place again one day very soon? We are dreaming of welcoming you back to our shores!

It’s nesting season in the Cayman Islands - CHEERS to a whole new batch of beautiful, wonderfully free spirited, albeit really horrible at flying, Cayman green parrots!

The Cayman Parrot is a protected species under the National Conservation Law. Please help us protect these beautiful creatures. Currently, it is nesting season. If you are having any landscaping done please be mindful that you may come across a parrot nest. If so, please leave the nest undisturbed. Kindly, inform your gardeners and landscapers to be both mindful and respectful of any parrot nests in your garden.

Our friend Julie is a stingray whisperer! Now is the perfect time to make plans for your 2021 Spring vacation - we will be here waiting for you!

Sunrise at Stingray City is indeed an extremely special experience. For about 10 minutes just after the sun rises, the light rays streak through the water, which creates a magical glow. The low rising sun shines through the calm surface to produce shimmering light rays.

To be there to witness this is something I will never get enough of and I cannot wait to get back out there again.

This is for those of you stuck inside locally & also for the many who cannot make it here due to todays unfortunate travel restrictions. My goal is to provide a bit of Hope by sharing as many beautiful images as possible that surround us in Cayman. Stay safe!

With Cayman’s waters closed to all watercraft activity(i.e. boating, kayaking, paddle boarding) for the past month and for at least another week, we have not forgotten about our precious residents at the sandbar in the North Sound!

Stingrays at sandbar still doing well.
In response to public concern that the stingray tourism product be maintained while maintaining government curfew, DoE has begun regular checks and feeding of stingrays at the sandbar.

Who says life has come to a screeching halt amidst this nasty pandemic?!!!!! CLE welcomes our first batch of 2020 turtle hatchlings to the world!

April 24, 2020: [Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands] — The Green sea turtle nesting season at the Cayman Turtle Centre has started early. The Centre’s first turtle hatchlings for the season have made their
appearance, emerging from a nest that was laid within the Centre at the end of February. “It is such a wonder when these small turtle hatchlings decide to show up from under the sand surface. We expect to see more turtle hatchlings come from this clutch over the next few days, and many more from the eggs in the incubation boxes already in our hatchery continuing till late September,” Mr Tim Adam, Chief Executive Officer for Cayman Turtle Conservation and Education Centre said.
One of the main conservation efforts at Cayman Turtle Conservation and Education Centre is the augmentation of the wild sea turtle population through our captive breeding, rearing and release of Green turtles at various life-stages. Peer-reviewed published independent studies have shown that as a result of more than three decades of this programme, The Centre has contributed nearly all of 90% of the nesting Green turtles in Cayman and this is therefore one of the most direct and impactful ways that the Centre can locally contribute to the conservation of Green sea turtles. It also gives CTCEC excellent opportunities for educating residents and visitors about sea turtles and marine conservation in general.
“It is exciting to know that these hatchlings will be released into the wild in just about a year’s time. These will add to the almost 33,000 turtles that we have already released into the wild. The Cayman Turtle Centre is delighted to be a part of the solution for the growth and conservation efforts of the Green sea turtle population in the Caribbean. Recent studies proved through genetic analysis that 90% of the Green turtles nesting on the beaches of Cayman are genetically closely related to the turtles bred at the Centre and released into the wild. The reality is that these little hatchlings that have emerged here at the Centre will eventually go into the ocean as one or two year old turtles and have a good head-start with much better chances of surviving to adulthood. They’ll then come back 20 or more years later to nest on our beaches. That is so exciting” Chief Marketing and Merchandising Officer, Mrs Renee Howell said.
EARTH DAY AT CAYMAN TURTLE CENTRE WELCOMES SEASONS FIRST HATCHLINGS

“We are looking forward to re-opening the Centre soon where residents from the local community and eventually visitors to the Cayman Islands can see up close the turtle hatchlings in our hatchery, as well as the yearlings and older turtles in our encounters and exhibits. In the meantime though, it is important to the Cayman Islands and to our Company’s mission that we secure the safety and health of our crew and our visitors during the COVID-19 situation the world is facing. During this period, the many animals at the Centre have been receiving amazing care and nourishment from our essential crew members going to the Centre each day in separate shifts, observing social distancing and other precautionary protocols” Mr Adam said.
“It is expected that over the next few months, with the recovery from the pandemic crisis our island and our beaches will reopen for residents and visitors and soon we can release more turtles into the wild as part of private group sponsorships to help sustain our ongoing conservation efforts,” Mr Adam said.
