They feed, using the teeth of their rasping radula, on the thin film of fungi and algae that grow on the bark of mangrove trees. Periwinkles may live from three years to five years. Tonight we experienced sightings of the Bermudian Glow Worm!! 🤩 🪱 🌚 For only a few nights after full moon these incredible creatures make their magical appearance! 🪄 ✨Only the females have the ability to glow. She can be seen during a twenty minute window, an hour after sunset. At the surface of the water she makes a captivating display of blueish-green light. The males are attracted to this light. 💡

We are grateful for all of you that have joined and plan to join our tours on either the kayaks or our double decker hybrid electric boat. ✨ We have some salty seasoned crew back with us this year and some new crew too. We are ready to welcome you on our Bioluminescent Tours! Happy New Year 2023! 𝑪𝒂𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒘𝒊𝒎? We do allow guests to swim, but our company discourages swimming to prevent fouling the water and the risk of being stung by jellyfish. It is a fact that thousands of jellyfish live in the bay year round on the sea bed. 𝓗𝓸𝔀𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻, if you are determined to swim, PLEASE ensure you have NO chemicals/lotions on your body. Chemicals/lotions on your skin and hair wash off your body and end up trapped in the Bio Bay harming these microscopic organisms due to the low water exchange. Since the glowing creatures are trapped in the bay allowing their glow to increase in number, this also means that if we bring pollution to the bay like; gasoline, sunscreens, lotions etc, these pollutants foul the waters and are also trapped in the bay. Please be respectful to the natural phenomenon. 📣 BIG NEWS 📣 “Make a walk in such a way that everyone learns many things from your each step!” ― Mehmet Murat İldan Here’s a sneak peek 👁… Introducing, “NIGHTSHIFT” Cayman Kayaks’ NEW Bioluminescent ELECTRIC Tour Boat! A one of a kind electric boat for a one of a kind experience! Read to the end for a chance to get onboard🤩 What started as a dream to protect a special place has turned into sixteen years of running sustainable kayak tours and now a new venture, a uniquely designed electric boat. I, Thomas Watling, may be one of only a handful of people who genuinely care about Cayman’s bioluminescent bay. The bay is still not protected, but that won’t stop me from doing my best to preserve it through my actions. Even if it’s just one step at a time to BE the difference. The microscopic organisms that are responsible for the glowing experience are essentially trapped in the bay. Constricted because of the way the bay is shaped, the build up of nutrients and the prevailing wind. Pollutants like pesticides, fertilizer, oils, exhaust from boat engines, skin lotions, sunscreen, deodorant and bug repellent foul the water. These pollutants take longer to break down because of low water exchange. The impact is fatal for these glowing creatures. After all these years of leading Bioluminescent Tours, my stomach twists, my back aches and my jaw clenches every time I hear the sound of an outboard engine start up in the bay. I tell myself “perhaps they know not what they are doing or maybe they don’t care…or if they do know they are harming this environment, only they can decide to make a change and switch to electric motors and encourage their guests to wash off bug repellents and lotions before swimming, that is my hope. Fascinating yet intimidating! These upside down jellyfish, 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘢, are mesmerizing to watch. The species uses its venom (not deadly to humans but can cause discomfort) to paralyse prey that swims into the vicinity of its arms.

It’s a special day for Tom and I (Lisha)! Today we celebrate 10 years of marriage and 10 years of working together. Apparently during our marriage we love to kayak! 😂 Wherever we travel we find the water. 🛶 Many people say it’s hard to run a business with their partner but we absolutely love it. 💕 We both work our butts off and we have some really tough days but we are so thankful to be able to work alongside each other. 📣 ᴍᴀʏᴅᴀʏ ᴍᴀʏᴅᴀʏ 📣 Did you know Frederick Mockford came up with the term as an international distress call back in 1923. It was made official in 1948. Frederick was a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London. 📻 He came up with the idea for “mayday" because it sounded like the French word m'aider, which means “help me."
