Living Lakes Network

⭐ Here is our first of six finalists of our TO DO Award 2025: The Lake Heritage project of the Nagenahiru Foundation from Sri Lanka. 🌱📚 Since its inception in 2008, the project has focused on mangrove restoration at Madampa Lake while also offering educational programs and sustainable tourism initiatives. Despite significant challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crises, the initiative has succeeded in promoting biodiversity and enhancing ecological awareness. By involving local communities in the conservation process and building capacities, the project exemplifies how ecological measures and community development can go hand in hand. 🤝

Madampa Lake is located in Ambalangoda of Southern Sri Lanka, with a wetland and mangroves. This stunning basin is home to an impressive range of wildlife, serving as a sanctuary for various species.

Lake Madampa is a wildlife enthusiast's paradise, boasting a wide range of flora and fauna. There are 128 bird species, 44 reptile species, and 44 fish species, as well as various mammals, amphibians, butterflies, and dragonflies. The wetland represents 30% of the vertebrate fauna of Sri Lanka, with a total number of 06 Mangrove species out of the country's 21 species being found here.
