Uda Walawe National Park is the best park in Sri Lanka to watch and photograph wild elephants. During a visit, it is not unusual to see whole herds of adults and young elephants, sometimes upto 40 elephants feeding or bathing and playing in their natural habitate. Located next to the vast Uda Walawe reservoir, only a short drive from the south coast, the park covers an area of over 30,000 hectares and consists of a mixture of scrubland, grassland and teak forest. In addition to over 500 wild elephants, the park is also home to many water buffalo, water monitor lizards, sambar deer, spotted deer, Muntjac, wild boar, monkeys, occasional leopard, black- napped hare and small Indian civet cat, endemic golden palm civet cat, three species of mongoose and more. Uda Walawe National Park is also an exciting location for bird enthusiasts. Landbirds are in abundance, and include Indian Roller, Indian Peafowl, Malabar Pied Hornbill and Pied Cuckoo.

Dambulla is a famous for its remarkable cave temple, 500 feet high and dating back to the 1st century BC when King Valagam Bahu, driven out of Anuradhapura, took refuge here. When he regained his throne he converted the caves into a magnificent rock temple. Later kings made further improvements to the temple, including gilding of the interior, earning the name Ran Giri (Golden Rock). With its series of spectacular caves and a painted area of cover 20,000 sq.ft. Of Buddhist murals, Dambulla truly is magnificent.
