Sri Lanka has been ranked no 1 as “The best places for solo female travel in 2024” by Timeout.com.

Solo female travel is having a moment – according to a recent survey, over half of Gen Z women would consider travelling abroad alone. That means more women than ever are heading off to far-flung destinations in search of new friends, different cultures and memorable experiences.

1. Sri Lanka

The tiny teardrop island of Sri Lanka is like India in miniature but with its own unique charm, making it the perfect first stop for female travellers wanting to dip into South Asia. It’s popular with backpackers and perfectly sized for a week or a month spent exploring the ancient Unesco-listed sites like Dambulla and Sigiriya or visiting tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya. And for some blissful downtime, the golden beaches of Arugam Bay, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa promise beachfront hostels, surfing and delicious local food.

Sri Lankan cuisine is a vibrant and diverse culinary experience that reflects the country's rich history and cultural influences.

Known for its bold flavors, aromatic spices, and use of fresh ingredients, Sri Lankan food is a delightful fusion of indigenous flavors combined with influences from various cultures, including Indian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Malay. Rice and curry considered the heart of Sri Lankan cuisine, feature prominently in meals, accompanied by an array of curries made with coconut milk, spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and various vegetables, meats, or seafood. Some signature dishes include hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes made from rice flour and coconut milk), string hoppers (steamed rice flour noodles), kottu roti (chopped flatbread stir-fried with vegetables, egg, and/or meat), and an assortment of savory snacks such as samosas and cutlets. Additionally, using coconut in various forms, from grated coconut to creamy coconut milk, adds a distinctive richness to many Sri Lankan dishes, making its cuisine a delightful exploration of flavors and textures.
